EVERYTHING IS GOING SWIMMINGLY: Trump support erupts; 14-point swing provides 10-point advantage.

I’m increasingly convinced that they’ll find a way to get rid of Biden, but not at all sure how they’ll manage or who’ll they’ll replace him with. Though maybe here’s a hint: Is It Time for a Second Look at Kamala? “Looming over this whole discussion has been the assumption that Kamala Harris would be an even weaker candidate than Biden, and so it wouldn’t be worth trying to orchestrate a clean handoff. But would she? At this point, I don’t think the answer is obvious.”

Well, she’s always been very unpopular, but Biden has gotten progressively less popular, so. . . .

HOW DESPERATE AND CRAZY CAN THEY GET? WE’RE ABOUT TO FIND OUT.

Ann Althouse comments:

My advice, and I’ve said it before, is to abandon the overblown demonization and treat Trump like the political candidate he is. About half of the electorate supports him. If it’s democracy they’re so concerned about, let them show respect for their fellow citizens and endeavor to understand the good reasons why they support Trump and not Biden and engage on the issues.

I don’t expect them to take this advice, because: 1. They’re so dug in, and 2. They don’t trust themselves to argue on the substantive merits.

They’re insane, and shouldn’t be allowed a role in public affairs until they straighten themselves out. This craziness is a danger to the Republic.

EVEN A FLATWORM IS SMART ENOUGH TO TURN AWAY FROM PAIN: Joel Kotkin: Across America’s cities, voters are driving out progressives: A recent spate of elections has sent a message to Left-wing leaders.

Related: Multi-Culti Reckoning: The Democrats’ appeal to racial resentment is wearing thin.

The explosion of support for Hamas’s assault on human decency could well turn out to be the high-water mark of the progressive Left. The authoritarian multicultural ideology generated on campuses and transmitted dutifully by the established media has reached its apex and may now begin to descend.

The signs are tentative but some are unmistakable. Corporate and university Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) departments are being slashed, and increasingly seen as both burdensome and discriminatory toward whites, Jews, and Asians. One-third of DEI professionals lost their jobs in 2022. Brands that posted Pride month messages in 2022, such as Lego and Miller Lite, have abandoned such posturing. Even the Navy deleted Pride-related messaging from Instagram and Twitter.

Perhaps more significant may be the rebellion of donors to the leading universities, prime movers of the ideology that drives everything from the DEI establishment. Money is the mother’s milk of politics and universities and foundations alike. The overt hostility toward Israel on campuses, and the resulting feeling of threat among Jewish students, makes Jewish and non-Jewish donors wonder where their money is going.

Even liberal Jews, such as Berkeley Law School dean Erwin Chemerinsky, have been shocked by the rise of racialized and antisemitic politics at prestigious institutions. A possible loss of Jewish voters matters little at the presidential level but could prove relevant in Pennsylvania and Michigan. Unlike their French, Canadian, and British co-religionists, they may function as a rearguard in reining in the far Left.

But the biggest loss may be financial, as well as intellectual. As William Domhoff pointed out in his 1972 book Fat Cats and Democrats, wealthy Jews have been, since the New Deal, major leading donors of the Democratic Party. Jews provide roughly half of all donations, and comprise many of Biden’s top contributors.

This shift, however, extends well beyond Jews, as many long-time Democrats recoil from the party’s embrace of an ideology—propounded by influential leftist intellectuals such as Frantz Fanon, Herbert Marcuse, and Michel Foucault—that justifies criminal violence if committed by an oppressed identity group, a policy calculated to spark ever more ethnic turmoil.

Calculated is right.

THE FRUITS OF CORRUPTION INCLUDE DISTRUST:

OPEN THREAD: Thread it to the limit, one more time.

SO I’M READING TOM BURKHALTER’S WWII AVIATION NOVELS, starting with Everything We Had, and they’re quite good — page turners with lots of aviation detail and good characters. I just finished the second book, A Snowball’s Chance. Well worth your time. (Bumped).

WELL, GOOD: Did Google Just Defeat Every Geofence Warrant? “Google will no longer keep location history even for the users who opted in to have it turned on. Instead, the location history will only be kept on the user’s phone. . . . Unless I’m missing something, this will entirely defeat geofence warrants— which, I would speculate, was probably the point of Google’s policy change. If Google doesn’t keep the records, Google will have no records to turn over. If the government comes to Google with a court order for geofence data, Google will just say, sorry, we don’t keep that stuff anymore.”

WELL, THIS IS THE 21ST CENTURY, YOU KNOW: More cardiac specialists use smartwatches to spot heart problems in kids. “A review of medical records at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health found that 41 young patients had arrhythmias detected by a smartwatch, a new study published Wednesday in the journal Communications Medicine found.”

PROFESSOR CARRINGTON, CALL YOUR OFFICE: Largest solar flare of this cycle (so far). “Sunspot 3514 erupted on Dec. 14th (1702 UT), producing a strong X2.8-class solar flare. This is the strongest flare of Solar Cycle 25 (so far) and the most powerful eruption the sun has produced since the great storms of Sept. 2017. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash. . . . It’s too soon to know for sure, but this explosion probably launched a fast coronal mass ejection (CME) with an Earth-directed component. The US Air Force is reporting a Type II solar radio burst, which typically comes from the leading edge of a CME. Based on the drift rate of the radio burst, the emerging CME’s velocity could exceed 2100 km/s (4.7 million mph). Stay tuned for confirmation.”

THEY WERE GOING AFTER TRUMP, WHEN ALL ALONG THE RUSSIAN COLLUSION WAS COMING FROM INSIDE THE FBI: Tough Sentence Punctuates Downfall of Former FBI Counterintelligence Chief: Judge sentences Charles McGonigal to more than four years in prison for accepting secret payments from sanctioned Russian oligarch.

Charles McGonigal spent more than two decades as an FBI agent working on some of the country’s most important national-security and terrorism cases, including the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and ended up as the bureau’s chief spy hunter in New York.

He has since taken a humiliating fall, pleading guilty earlier this year to felonies in two separate cases, including violating U.S. sanctions by accepting secret payments from a Russian oligarch, a crime for which he was sentenced on Thursday to more than four years in prison. . . .

The sentencing underscored the precipitous fall from grace for the former counterintelligence chief, who once had access to sensitive information and oversaw investigations into spies and U.S. citizens suspected of working on behalf of foreign governments. In the fallout, McGonigal has lost lucrative private-sector gigs and the respect of many former agents.

He told the judge at the sentencing that he regretted his actions and that he had betrayed his family, friends and former colleagues.

“As a former FBI special agent, it causes me extreme mental, emotional and physical pain,” he said.

Well, good. It should. I suspect that there are quite a few other people in that corrupt organization who need to face similar treatment.
