UPDATE: Reader Jay Edwards writes: “I am a (former) longtime resident of Texas, and have met the Govenor on several occasions. He is down to earth, very charismatic, and comes of as a man’s man. The professional left is going to HATE him. My only question is how long before we see a coordinated effort to destroy him from Team Obama and the MSM. I would guess that we could tell how scared the left is of him by how soon the NYT does a hit piece on him. Your thoughts?”

I think that’s another reason for him to hang back as long as possible, and let them expend their energy — and remaining credibility — on others.
