For a more — dare I say it — nuanced view, I highly recommend Ed Larson’s book, Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America’s Continuing Debate over Science and Religion. Larson and I were on a Court TV program about this trial a few years ago, though I don’t think it’s available anywhere.
