WHAT’S WORSE THAN SOCIAL MEDIA? Facebook’s metaverse plans labelled as ‘dystopian’ and ‘a bad idea.’ “Facebook should have lost the right to make its own choices. A regulator should be there giving pre-approval for everything they do. The amount of harm they’ve done is incalculable.”

MY NEW YORK POST COLUMN: Democrats’ war on suburban women includes inflation-fueling reckless spending. “Then there are the increases that can’t be hidden. Gasoline is way up, with the effects of inflation exacerbated by Biden’s policy of pipeline cancellations and fracking bans. I’m paying $3.73/gallon now; I was paying something like $2.40/gallon a year ago. (Some people are fighting back by putting Joe Biden “I did that!” stickers next to the price window on gas pumps. They’re selling briskly on Amazon.)”
Plus: “‘Milton Friedman isn’t running the show anymore,’ said Biden, referring to the famous anti-inflation economist, when he was challenged about the inflationary impact of his grandiose spending plans. Except that actually, Friedman kind of is. Politicians like spending, so they don’t want to admit that overspending leads to inflation. But as Friedman reminded us, it always does.”
MIRANDA DEVINE: Election a wake-up call for the woke.
So, of course, after Tuesday’s drubbing at the polls, all we heard on MSNBC and CNN was that mild-mannered Glenn Youngkin had won the governor’s race in Virginia because of racism.
“These Republicans are dangerous … to our national security,” ranted MSNBC’s Joy Reid, “because stoking that kind of soft white nationalism eventually leads to the hard-core stuff.”
Well, Virginia’s sensational new lieutenant governor, former Marine Winsome Sears, has news for Reid.
“I have been black all my life, but that’s not what this is about,” the mother of three and former small businesswoman said in a patriotic victory speech.
“We are framing too many issues in terms of race,” she told Fox News later. “It just continues to divide us and unfortunately politicians are using it … to advance their nefarious purposes … I’m destroying all the narratives about race. Look at me.”
Don’t worry about Democrats actually heeding their wakeup call — they seem to be hitting the snooze button instead.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: Virginia Election Broke Democrats Worse Than Trump Did. “I’ve written many times that I believe that Donald Trump broke the Democrats in 2016. Their midterm gains in 2018 and whatever the heck happened last year didn’t fix them even a little bit. They’ve been teetering on the edge of a steep cliff, just waiting for a little push.”

OH, TO BE IN ENGLAND: UK Considering Legislation That Would Imprison Internet Trolls.
If you ever need a reminder of how important freedom of speech is, all you need to do is look across the pond. The United Kingdom, which doesn’t have a First Amendment, has slowly seen citizens’ free speech rights eroded—and now may soon start imprisoning people for being trolls on the internet.
At question is pending legislation called the “Online Safety Bill,” which ostensibly punishes social media companies that allow harassment. Yet it may be expanded to include new criminal penalties for individuals who engage in mean speech online.
“Trolls could face two years in prison for sending messages or posting content that causes psychological harm under legislation targeting online hate,” the Times of London reports. “The Department for Culture, Media & Sport has accepted recommendations from the Law Commission for crimes to be based on ‘likely psychological harm.’ The proposed law change will shift the focus on to the ‘harmful effect’ of a message rather than if it contains ‘indecent’ or ‘grossly offensive’ content, which is the present basis for assessing its criminality.”
In 2018, when British cops were threatening social media critics after the NHS banished 23-month-old Alfie Evans to the Spartan hillside, British ex-pat Charles C.W. Cooke tweeted, “Michael Brendan Dougherty pointed out to me that police in the U.K. spend all their time on Twitter threatening people with jail time for frivolous things, and now I can’t stop seeing it.”
As a wise woman once wrote, “There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them.”
UGH: Navy Faces Prospect That Crash Will Force USS Connecticut Out Of Service.
Despite a virtual news blackout, information on America’s damaged Seawolf Class attack submarine, USS Connecticut (SSN-22), is starting to leak out. While details are scarce, the Pacific Fleet’s latest operational debacle has left the U.S. without a key undersea combatant. At a minimum, the USS Connecticut will be out of service for years, and there is a creeping realization that the damage may be significant enough to force the USS Connecticut into a premature retirement.
It is time for the Navy to start talking. Regardless of the outcome, the fate of the USS Connecticut has enormous ramifications for virtually every facet of America’s maritime industrial base. Given the extended news blackout and the fact that the submarine hasn’t budged from Guam yet, indications suggest the USS Connecticut is badly hurt.
This is no time to smother a potentially uncomfortable debate under an over-classified blanket; the USS Connecticut’s mishap is a big deal and no longer a cozy internal Navy matter.
It is a big deal.
The Connecticut is one of only three Seawolf-class boats, the biggest and best-armed attack subs in the Navy. Losing her is about equivalent to last year’s loss of the USS Bonhomme Richard to arson.
Our Pacific fleet just lost a significant fraction of its strike capabilities — in peacetime.
It’s a very big deal.

WAR ON PARENTS: Indiana school administrator: You’d better believe we teach CRT — and lie to parents about it.
Putting your kids in public school is parental malpractice.
Related: “But the schools stuff hits the hardest, because it attacks people’s kids. And in the end, it may not just be Virginia Democrats who self-destructed but the public schools themselves. New York City’s public schools are hemorrhaging students – losing 64,000 students since the 2019-20 school year – as parents move their kids to charter schools, private schools, home-schooling or out of the city altogether. And you can see similar trends around the nation.”

HANNAH COX: Virginia’s Governor Race Shows America’s School Choice Moment Has Finally Arrived.
Families have endured almost two years of pandemic policy, with those with school-age children arguably suffering the most. Parents have had to scramble to school their children at home, rearrange work schedules, and deal with the growing anxiety and mental health issues their kids are facing as a result.
Parents have also gotten to see firsthand what’s actually going on in their children’s classrooms during this time, and many have not been pleased. To make matters worse, when they attempted to go through the proper channels to address these significant issues—their elected school boards—they were shut down, not allowed to speak, and ultimately labeled domestic terrorists by their federal government who attempted to sic the FBI on them in a coordinated attack between the Biden Administration and the National School Board Association. . . .
School choice used to be a third rail issue not even five years ago. I should know, I was working to pass it in Tennessee back in 2016 and 2017. Democrats didn’t want it for the reasons that they still oppose it—they work to protect the interests of unions and administrators vs families. But Republicans were hesitant at the time as well.
Those days are long gone. After the injustices in our education system were laid bare over the past year and a half, parents are rising up to demand control of their kids’ futures and looking for options to remove government from the picture. School choice is no longer a fringe issue. Indeed, many have become single-issue voters on it.
In fact, a national school choice poll now shows 67 percent of voters want school choice. And if the Virginia race tells us anything, it’s that parents are going to vote for it as soon as they get the chance.
While it is unfortunate that it takes a catastrophe like COVID-19 for many to recognize the depth of problems in our educational system, we can at least hope that a silver-lining of this pandemic is a permanent wake-up call for parents.
The actions taken and statements made on education during the course of the pandemic by the left have made it clear that they believe the nation’s children belong to them. Just the mention of school choice or parental control draws sneers from those who feel entitled to the cash cow each child represents in the system. For them, it is not about educational outcomes (clearly), but rather about control.
It always is with these people.
