HMM: Bipartisan Majority of Americans Now Believe Coronavirus Leaked from Lab.

The survey found that 52 percent of Americans believe coronavirus leaked from a lab, compared with 28 percent who think the pandemic started following human contact with an infected animal. Support for the lab-leak theory is bipartisan, with 52 percent of Democrat and 59 percent of Republican respondents backing the theory.

In a Pew Research Center survey conducted from March 10-16, 2020, just 29 percent of Americans said they believed coronavirus leaked from a lab.

The current bipartisan agreement on the lab-leak issue is unusual, said Bob Blendon, professor of health policy at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the designer of the survey.

“Usually, our polls find a big split between Republicans and Democrats, so this is unique,” Blendon told Politico.

Regardless of whether the Wuhan Virus actually did escape from a Communist Chinese lab — and I’m more than inclined to believe that it did — the real news here is that neither Republicans nor even Democrats still buy the Party Line.

DISPATCHES FROM THE BLUE ZONES: Sex Ed Teacher Who Taught 6-Year-Olds About Masturbation Resigns, Blames Bosses. “Justine Ang Fonte, a health director at a leading prep school in Manhattan who notoriously taught six-year-olds about masturbation and showed teens OnlyFans photos, has resigned — and she’s blaming her bosses at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School for her ouster, not the porn.”

HANNAH COX: Is It Time to Go Single Issue on Qualified Immunity? As she notes, it’s a “made up” legal doctrine, with no basis in the Constitution or in statute. If government officials are to be free from lawsuits, let Congress do it.

But if qualified immunity is a bad idea for cops, who have to make split-second decisions, then there’s really no excuse allowing it for school administrators and other bureaucrats, who don’t.

GOODER AND HARDER: San Francisco Political Leaders Out of Touch as City Descends Into Lawlessness.

If you don’t like the explosion of violent crime, you’re a racist.

That’s the message sent by a top aide to the San Francisco district attorney to a self-described “Democrat” who had said on Twitter that the jump in crime had made people afraid for their lives and dubious about the city’s future.

The Democrat tweeted that “every single one of my friends right now is considering leaving” San Francisco because of the big increase in crime, adding: “My friends are scared for their children, and their husbands are scared for their wives.”

Kate Chatfield, a senior director for San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, responded from a now-locked Twitter account: “‘Husbands are scared for their wives’—your reminder that the ‘crime surge’ crowd shares the same ideology as The Birth of a Nation.”

COLD WAR II: China Is Weaker Than Xi Will Admit.

China’s first weakness is strongman Xi himself. Instead of selling off inefficient state-owned industries and banks, which still make up a significant portion of the Chinese economy, he is trying to recentralize power. He has done away with the improvement of Hu Jintao, his predecessor as Party leader, which set the expectation that CPP leaders would step down after two five-year terms. This was Hu’s attempt to begin to modernize Communist Party governance by trying to regularize changes of leadership. Instead, Xi is trying to return China to the bad old days of succession struggles after a political strongman (now Xi) dies or is incapacitated. In addition, the private economy continuing to carry the burden of sclerotic state-owned “key” industries and banks will slow Chinese economic growth.

Also likely to slow economic growth is China’s demographic crisis. As countries develop and industrialize, they have fewer children because less labor is needed in the agricultural sector and greater numbers of children raise costs to individual families. Thus, many developed countries around the world have declining birthrates. However, China’s problem is much worse because of the Communist Party’s disastrous “one-child policy,” which was revoked only after it had exacerbated the demographic crisis.

Furthermore, China has restive ethnic inhabitants of Xinjiang and Tibet and a politically unruly pro-democracy population in Hong Kong, which China is suppressing in violation of its promise to allow a “One China, Two Systems” approach. Such fractious populations weaken China internally.

Communist China is far more brittle than any U.S. leader other than Donald Trump is willing to admit — or exploit. Our current leadership seems happy to let Beijing hit our weak spots without fear of retaliation.
