LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR, 21st CENTURY STYLE:  How do couples meet these days?  Everyone knows that meeting online is much more common now than it was … well … before there was an online.  But I did not realize until I saw this chart that there had been such a sharp uptick since 2000 in meeting in a bar or a restaurant.

One possible contributing factor to all this is the rise of sexual harassment lawsuits under Title VII and Title IX.  Note from the chart that the decrease in “meeting through or as coworkers” seems to roughly track the 1986 Supreme Court case that recognized sexual harassment lawsuits against employers under Title VII and (more importantly) the 1991 amendments to the law that made general money damages available for the first time.  That’s when employers started strongly discouraging amorous co-workers.

There was a bit of a time lag with Title IX (which covers colleges and universities).  It wasn’t until 1999 that the Supreme Court held that a school district could be held liable under Title IX for failing to control a student who is sexually harassing another student.  The students in that case happened to be 5th graders, but colleges and universities knew they were the ones most at risk for a lawsuit.  They stepped up their game at discouraging what they (often overzealously) considered “sexual harassment.”  Right on schedule, the line for “met in college” starts to decline.

Since 2000 or so, the number of couples who met in a bar or restaurant increased by about 50%.  It’s hard to know whether this is a real uptick in “cruising the bars” or something else.  But it makes me wonder whether all this concern over women’s safety at school and work has made them safer.

WILL THE PRESS PROTECT HIM NOW THAT HIS DAD’S BEEN DECLARED THE VICTOR? Hunter Biden owed hundreds of thousands of dollars to IRS, email shows. “Hunter Biden, now under investigation for suspected tax fraud, owed a ‘substantial’ amount to the IRS in 2018, apparently for 2017 and prior years when he was receiving regular income from a Ukrainian oligarch and Chinese firms tied to the Communist Party, an email shows. The October 2018 email from his certified public accountant to Mr. Biden, son of President-elect Joseph R. Biden, showed there was miscommunication between the CPA and Hunter. It also shows the IRS had been assessing Hunter Biden late fees for unpaid taxes. The CPA told him ‘The taxes owed are substantial’ and listed $600,000 in personal taxes and $204,000 owed for Owasco, Hunter Biden’s D.C. law firm.”

VERY: How concerned investors should be about Biden’s tax proposals.

What effect would these taxes have on stock market behavior? It’s complicated, but Dan Wiener, who runs the Independent Adviser for Vanguard Investors and is chairman of Adviser Investment Management, says the impact on investors from a capital gains hike may be more limited than many think. “The people who will be most concerned are high-end active traders and some hedge funds,” he said. “Much of the stock is with pension funds who have no tax liability; 401(k) and IRA accounts are not taxed until the money is taken out.”

Raising taxes on the wealthy will also revive the old debate that hiking taxes would not necessarily provide a dramatic increase in revenues.

A recent study by the Tax Foundation concluded the Biden tax proposal would raise $3.3 trillion over the next decade, and that raising capital gains taxes would raise only $469.4 billion over the same time period, a fairly small sum of money. Most of the increase would come from raising the corporate income tax rate and the Social Security payroll tax increase.

A separate 2010 study by the Congressional Research Service examined what it called “behavioral responses” to changes in capital gains taxes. The capital gains tax discourages capital gains realizations because capital gains are taxed only when realized. Because of this, “investors may be encouraged to hold suboptimal portfolios or forego investment opportunities with higher pre-tax returns.” In other words, when capital gains taxes are high, investors will likely respond by holding onto stocks rather than selling, which makes the market less efficient.

People will realize lower returns but Washington won’t collect much more money.

Biden hasn’t even been sworn in yet and I’m already tired of all the losing.

QUICK, GIVE THIS MAN ANOTHER EMMY. Cuomo’s New York Is Just Throwing Away Vaccines Rather Than Distributing Them Competently.

The day after more than 4,100 people died from COVID-19 across the U.S., news broke that health care providers in New York were forced to throw out precious vaccine doses instead of putting them in people’s arms.

New York’s Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, is the main man to blame. On December 28, he signed an executive order rolling out strict penalties—up to $1 million in fines, plus loss of medical license—for medical providers who allow people to skip the state-issued vaccination line, even when those doses are about to expire. The state’s current vaccination plan allows frontline public health workers who have direct contact with patients to be vaccinated, as well as residents in nursing homes and other congregate care facilities. It does not currently allow for vaccination of most other elderly people, the group at the highest risk of death from COVID-19.

Hey, they don’t call him “Grandma-Killer Andy” for nothing.

YES, WHAT AMAZON DID WAS UNCONSCIONABLE. AND I’M NOT GOING TO DEFEND IT. IN FACT, IF I CAN GET A FEW MINUTE WHEN MY HUSBAND IS NEITHER WORKING NOR ASLEEP, I’M GOING TO HAVE A TALK ABOUT WHAT WE CAN BUY LOCALLY, ETC.  But there is something you must understand. Not only are web hosting and the ebook/kindle division not the same, but ebooks account for somewhere between 2% and 0.5% of Amazon’s income.  Yes, that’s still income.  But think about it. Right now a lot of indie writers have nowhere to go. And most of the successful ones are on the right. If we Boycott Amazon ebooks, they’ll hurt very little, but you’ll destroy several people on our side.

Yes, we absolutely need alternatives, and right now I’m involved in three discussions about how to start competition in indie ebook platforms (the existing ones are either terrible or very lefty, or both.) We could use a lottery win. Like all projects on the right, capital is a huge issue, since we are as you know the side of the “rich” (spits.)

However till competition is up and running, do not abandon indies.  We creatives on the right are persona non grata everywhere else. Don’t make it impossible for us to make a living.  (And seriously, when I was on all the other platforms, all of them combined made a tenth of what Amazon made.) I explain why in more detail, and link to some decent writers:   Vignettes by Luke, Mary Catelli and ‘Nother Mike and Book Promo and Some Blather By Sarah.

And please, please, please, any techies out there, make with the alternatives. That’s what you can do to help in this mess. And it’s very important.

REALITY OF TWITTER: The Federalist’s David Marcus puts it about as succinctly as it can be said:

“For all its talk about safety, community, and the health of discourse, we see today that Twitter acts in favor of one interest and one interest alone: its own, even when it means destabilizing the American people. On Friday, the company permanently banned Trump from its platform and began a purge of conservative voices.

“They claim this is needed to protect America from a coup. That is a farcical lie. They did it because their political enemies such as Trump and Sen. Josh Hawley are now out of power, and they mean to keep it way.”

And like Trump said, he’s just standing in the way of the Left’s actual targets, us.

LEFT’S RIOT HYPOCRISY EXPLAINED: Andy Ngo knows Antifa up close and personal as few, if any, other Americans do.

ROUND THEM UP, ROUND THEM ON, RIDE ON:  Roundup.

OKAY I DISAGREE THAT THERE WAS ANY RIOT. ALSO THE ONLY DEAD AS A RESULT OF THE PROTEST WAS ASHLI BABBITT AND SHE WAS ONE OF THE PROTESTERS. THE REST IS UNCLEAR AND WE SURE DON’T HAVE PICTURES. HOWEVER THIS IS CORRECT IN THE ESSENTIALS:  What Happened At Capitol About More Than Election.

This is not about Trump. As in, at all. At this point it’s about Americans being disenfranchised, ignored and told they don’t matter. And note the answer from the left is to double down.

YOU GUYS THINK I’M JOKING, I KNOW, BUT I’M TELLING YOU IF THE LEFTY IDIOTS KEEP THEIR GRIP ON US LONG ENOUGH TO INSTITUTE ACTUAL POLICIES, THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WILL BE RUNNING THE OTHER WAY.  AND I DON’T MEAN LIKE THE ONES THAT RAN UNDER OBAMA BECAUSE THE JOBS HERE SUCKED. I MEAN MANY PEOPLE BORN AND RAISED AMERICAN WILL BE RUNNING FOR THE BORDER.  LEARN SPANISH NOW IF THAT’S YOUR STRATEGY: Mexican President Slams Social Media Censorship Of President Trump.

Me? No thank you. I’m in my country, and I’m not leaving.

THEY CAN’T HELP THEMSELVES. ONCE YOU BELIEVE IN A WORLD DEFINED BY GROUPS COMPOSED OF INTERCHANGEABLE WIDGETS, THE MASS GRAVES ARE BAKED IN:  McCarthy Redux: The Left Is Making Lists.

I’m starting to think the only thing wrong with McCarthy was being much too late.

WELL! DON’T SAY THAT WHERE THE POTTED PLANT OR HIS SIDEKICK CAN HEAR YOU, YOU CRIMINAL THINKER YOU. NEXT THING YOU KNOW, YOU’LL BE BUYING A BUFFALO HEAD DRESS!  Media Hysteria And The Insurrection That Wasn’t.

TRULY! ALL IT HAS IS LIES AND FORCE. AND IT’S AFRAID:   Big Tech Purge Continues, Facebook Bans Walk Away Movement, Reddit Bans Pro-Trump Group, Twitter Purge Ongoing, Biden Labels Trump Supporters “Domestic Terrorists”.

Please, note this exquisite promise from the Pseudodent Select:

[Wall Street Journal] “Don’t dare call them protesters,” Mr. Biden said in remarks from Wilmington, Del. “They were a riotous mob. Insurrectionists. Domestic terrorists. It’s that basic. It’s that simple.”

Mr. Biden blamed President Trump for inciting the violence, saying he had “unleashed an all-out assault on our institutions of democracy.” The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

[…] Mr. Biden has said he plans to make a priority of passing a law against domestic terrorism, and he has been urged to create a White House post overseeing the fight against ideologically inspired violent extremists and increasing funding to combat them.

Here, let me translate “they were a riotous mob, and don’t you dare disagree. Stomp stomp stomp. We’re going to make it illegal to have ideas that might inspire people in buffalo head dresses to think they can sit on the Speaker’s chair. Why, it’s lese-majeste. L’etat c’est… you know, the thingy. And don’t you ever think differently, you dog faced pony soldier. Wanna do pushups, fatso?”

BECOMES? BECOMES????  WHAT ARE YOU? RIP VAN WINKLE? Social Media Becomes 21st Century Pravda.

Look, I got banned for a week for talking about Eric Ciaramella! Even though the left had read his name as that of the “whistleblower.”  They will stomp on you if you post less than credulous mouth-breathing acquiescence with the ever changing Covid-19 dictatorship.  They will force you to remove anything that implies election fraud. AND you’re just now noticing?

THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND OFFENSIVE, ARNIE AND YOU KNOW IT TOO. GEH DICHSELBST EINEN BLASEN, ARNIE:  Schwarzenegger says Capitol raid like Kristallnacht; recalls father’s WWII guilt.

Marching on the capitol with grievances — to wit the certainty you were disenfranchised and that your courts and institutions betrayed you —  is totally like burning down or ransacking tens of thousands of private residences and synagogues, putting 30,000+ people in concentration camps (killing significant numbers.) Totally the same, Arnie.  You’re such a good German, Arnie. Just like your dad. (Yes, I do know he is Austrian. Do you know who else was Austrian?)
