ROOSEVELT IN TRANSIT: The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt transits the Pacific Ocean. Photo taken Jan. 25, 2020. The Roosevelt is a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. It entered service in 1986 so it’s not a new warship. But you can’t judge a carrier on age alone. The Roosevelt has undergone “upgrades and refurbishments.” From 2010 to early 2013 the ship underwent Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH). This post from 2012 discusses the process and the price of U.S. Navy nuclear carrier upgrades and operations.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: Coronavirus infections predicted to grow exponentially; first death outside China; outbreak becomes political.

First Wuhan coronavirus death reported outside China.

Cocktail of flu, HIV drugs appears to help fight coronavirus: Thai doctors.

China bans funerals for coronavirus victims.

Coronavirus: German evacuation flight from China carried two infected people.

The coronavirus is hitting the tourism and travel sector hard.

One of my friends shared photos from the Shanghai airport, taken by a friend who was being evacuated to New Zealand. The place was deserted, with all the shops closed.

Also, the first link isn’t working. Nothing wrong with the link, the story appears to have been removed. It still shows up in search, but the story isn’t there.

Don’t know why.

PAUL BEDARD: Weekly Trump Report Card: Democrats crushed on impeachment, solid ‘A.’ I wouldn’t award the grade until the final vote was taken, but yeah. “Trump signed a new trade agreement with Mexico and Canada, which was achieved with bipartisan support. The national economy grew at a rate of 2.3% last year, and Trump wisely called the creeping coronavirus a national emergency. But that is how this past week will be remembered. This was the week that Trump once and for all captured the Republican Party —so much so that leading senators of the GOP were afraid to defy him or the solid base he owns.”

K-12 IMPLOSION UPDATE: Arizona’s education chief may not like vouchers, but she must follow the law.

School Choice Week started off with a bang this year. In Arizona, it was more like an explosion.

This week, reporters revealed that the state Department of Education released the personal information of nearly 7,000 families who use Empowerment Scholarship Accounts. Worse still, they sent it to Save Our Schools, staunch opponents of the program and educational choice in general.

ESAs enable parents, mostly those who have children with special needs, to direct their taxpayer dollars for specialized educational therapies or curriculum. The accounts help bridge the huge financial gap for families requiring customized assistance in the classroom.

The department released a spreadsheet that included the account balances of every ESA account in the state, along with names, email addresses and the grade in which the student is enrolled. Special needs students even had their disability listed.

As Jon Gabriel writes, “This isn’t just a blunder. It’s likely illegal.” Read the whole thing.

ANALYSIS: TRUE. Europeans Need To Grow Up.

One of the fun parts of the Trump administration is that it teased out already existing European – and especially German – antipathy towards the USA, especially in their political/media class, that we had not seen since Bush43 was in office. Yes, there are great friends of the USA in Germany … but as I learned living amongst them, just below the surface with a plurality of them – they have “issues.”

They hate us, but they are dependent on us. The two are in a way probably connected, but enough of that.

Plus:

European NATO, starting with Germany, needs to invest its fair share.

Europeans need to focus on the legitimate concerns of their citizens, not what the strap-hangers in Davos and Brussels feel would make them feel better.

Europeans need to give their people security, not let their governing elites line their pockets with Russian and Chinese graft.

If Europe can stop from importing its own destruction, it will be fine. If its politicians will stop focusing on each other’s virtue signaling, and instead focus on the standard of living and quality of life of its working citizens, they will be even better.

That would be pretty good advice for the USA as well.

Indeed.

THE PROBLEM IS NOT PRECISELY WITH BERNIE, BUT WITH AN EDUCATIONAL ESTABLISHMENT THAT HAS CREATED TWO GENERATIONS WHO THINK COMMUNISM IS A BEAUTIFUL THING, AND TO BE ASPIRED TO. THAT EDUCATIONAL ESTABLISHMENT AND THE HORDES OF MALEDUCATED ZOMBIES IT CREATED WILL BE THE DEATH OF US:  The Problem with Bernie.
