WALTER RUSSELL MEAD: Davos Crowd Frightened, Baffled By Rise Of Populism.

There is something inescapably ridiculous about a gathering this self-important; certainly Marie Antoinette and her friends dressing up as shepherdesses to celebrate the simple life has nothing on the more than 100 billionaires descending, often by private jet, on an exclusive Swiss ski resort for four days of ostentatious hand-wringing about the problems of the poor and the dangers of climate change. This year an earnest young aide at registration told me that, to reduce the event’s carbon footprint, no paper maps of the town were being distributed; one could almost feel the waves of relief from the nearby Alpine glaciers at this sign of green progress.

Yet smirk as one may, and sometimes as one must, this year’s WEF arrived at a difficult time for the Davoisie—those who are at home in the thin air of this global gathering. Leaders the world over are now having to come to grips with a new age of populism, nationalism and protectionism.

For the Davoisie the rise of populism is a huge problem. A world increasingly separating into rival blocs as supply chains begin to decouple isn’t a hospitable environment for global governance, Third Way capitalist reform and their many other hopes and projects. . . .

As the millionaires, billionaires and Greta Thunberg assemble in Davos this week to debate the future of the world, they face a crisis of relevance. What if, with all of their competence, experience, cosmopolitan vision and, yes, goodwill, the Davoisie are merely passengers, comfortably ensconced in first-class seats, on a train whose route they do not know and cannot control?

It’s the blow to their self-importance that’s hardest to endure.

SOLAR SCIENCE: Scientists pinpoint release of energy that powered series of solar flares. “Until now, scientists have only been able to study solar flares by examining the electromagnetic signatures registered at the photosphere, the sun’s white light. By studying the microwave spectrum at short time scales, scientists were able to study the movement of energy within in the corona — at the base of the solar flare.”

ANNALS OF LEFTIST AUTOPHAGY: Not Manly Enough: Femmephobia’s Stinging Impact on the Transmasculine Community. “Hoskin’s most recent study on femme identity, published in the journal Sex Roles, describes femmephobia as a ‘regulatory power’ within the LGBTQ community.”

Well, lately the LGBT community wants to regulate everybody, it seems, so why should you be immune from their censoriousness?

Plus:

“She could never take me seriously with being trans. She was always, like, But you like to wear skirts and dresses.”

Belderiver describes his gender expression as androgynous and femme. A typical outfit includes shredded jeans with a pair of fishnet stockings and a crop top. Belderiver’s hair is partially shaved. He wears black eyeliner and occasionally tops off the look with an electric-green lipstick.

“I’ve accepted a long time ago that I won’t be the most masculine guy,” Belderiver said. “Growing up I felt very stifled. I felt like I didn’t have a personality of my own. It has meant a lot to me to branch out and define who I am as a person.”

For Belderiver, the clothing he wears is about more than just gender expression. Dressing is an act of resistance against his overbearing parents.

I believe that.

A WOMAN’S VOICE REMINDS ME, TO SERVE AND NOT TO SPEAK: Suzanne Venker: A crucial alarm all modern men should heed. “That’s what modern feminism is: a push to disempower men to create a matriarchy. ‘Equality’ is just a ruse to get folks on board. And so many people fall for it, men included. After all, who could be against equality? It was a brilliant tactic.”

MORE BAIL REFORM FOLLIES:  Even De Blasio has said he is willing to tweak the new law.

PENETRATION: New for 2020: Federal Hydra-Shok Deep in .380 ACP. “Federal has introduced a .380 ACP load to its Hydra-Shok Deep lineup, the first cartridge for the chambering to consistently meet FBI protocol recommendations for penetration—12 inches minimum—through bare gel and through heavy clothing. The addition addresses the needs of a growing number of ultra-compact handguns carried by citizens of all ages, genders and demographics for self-defense.”

That’s my daily free PJMedia column. For our VIP members, I have a question: Where are my history nerds today? Today’s VIP essay explores the hidden connections between Soviet Russia’s failed attempts at building a blue-water, carrier-based navy, and the absolute folly of World War One. It’s called “A Most Unnecessary War,” and I hope members will enjoy it.

IMPEACHMENT IS THE LAST GASP OF THE PROGRESSIVE ERA: Donald Devine was President Ronald Reagan’s Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), and is a long-respected conservative strategist and thinker.

Writing today in The Imaginative Conservative, Devine argues the Trump impeachment is nothing less than the end of liberal Big Government’s ascendancy just when progressives thought they were on the brink of final victory:

Thanks to the pervasive political correctness they created, Devine writes, “progressives had assumed their education and mainstream media ‘mocking’ of traditional values had turned America progressive and now Donald Trump had proven they had not. Now with Mr. Trump in office, the last hope to contain the effects could only be by the expert bureaucracy that was the original faith of progressive scientific administration to produce the good welfare state.

“Rather than the elected president representing the people, salvation must now come from the permanent government. In the wake of the impeachment, there was a [Washington] Post op-ed headline actually arguing publicly that ‘bureaucratic resistance is what the Founders intended.’ Another piece by the celebrated intellectual Francis Fukuyama in The Wall Street Journal argued directly that ‘American liberty depends on the deep state.’”

Devine concludes with a warning for the Right that all conservatives ought to ponder with deep seriousness, as the end of the American story is far from written and may yet go in directions that are toxic to individual liberty.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I was assistant director of OPM for two-and-a-half years (1982-1985), working for Devine.
