GARRETT EPPS IS VERY WRONG ABOUT THIS: Guns Are No Mere Symbol: Protesters gathered at the Virginia state capitol on Monday to exercise their First Amendment rights, but they did so in a way that took away the First Amendment rights of others.

That, in one sense, was what many of the protesters in Richmond Monday were doing—politics in the purest sense, as they registered their opposition to planned gun-control legislation pending before the Virginia legislature. That opposition was one they have every right to feel and to express. This was, at one level, pure democratic politics.

But note who was not in Capitol Square on Monday. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence had also planned to assemble and petition for gun-control legislation—as it had done in peaceful competition with gun-rights groups in previous years. This year, because of the threats of armed violence surrounding the gun-rights march, that gun-control demonstration had to be canceled. The delegate from Manassas, Lee Carter, the South’s only socialist legislator, went into hiding because of death threats. Carter had not, in fact, sponsored an anti-gun measure, but gun-rights groups spread disinformation on the internet that he had done so; his life—and his ability to function as a legislator—was endangered.

One group’s politics canceled those of others, in other words. Self-government in a democratic society is supposed to follow a model of openness—different ideas and points of view compete in a “marketplace of ideas” for the support of the people and their representatives. That model doesn’t work when one side kills the other, or even threatens to.

If you conflate the threats of a few Internet loonies with the views of the entire opposing side in a debate — and this smear is central to Epps’ argument — then you can accuse anyone of using violence to undermine debate. If “that model doesn’t work when one side kills the other, or even threatens to” then that model never works, because there are always loonies — or even paid Bernie Sanders staffers — making those sorts of threats. It’s just when the threats come from the left they’re ignored rather than attributed to everyone else on their side of the ideological split.

And note that for all the scary talk of violence, there wasn’t any. Marching peacefully while armed is a statement not only that you are armed, but that you are peaceful. Is there any lefty group that could march on its enemies bearing deadly weapons and not engage in violence? Recent history suggests that the answer is no. (Much less clean up after themselves.)

If you start from the premise that your opponents are deranged killers whose mere presence paralyzes you with fear, you’re not standing up for “openness” and the marketplace of ideas, you’re engaged in a smear campaign.

DON SURBER: Trump’s remarkable remarks at Davos.

President Donald John Trump’s address at Davos this morning was a lesson on governance by a man who entered politics less than 5 years ago.

Our president said, “America’s newfound prosperity is undeniable, unprecedented and unmatched anywhere in the world. America achieved this stunning turnaround not by making minor changes to a handful of policies, but by adopting a whole new approach centered entirely on the well-being of the American worker.”

That is incredible. A billionaire spoke to fellow billionaires, fellow world leaders, and academics not about the swell digs they were staying at or the lush cuisine they enjoyed.

President Trump talked about actually serving the people who entrusted them with power.

No wonder they hate him.

BAD NEWS FOR FACEBOOK: Supreme Court Won’t Block Facial Recognition Lawsuit. “The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to take up a high-profile court battle over whether users can sue Facebook for using facial recognition technology on their photos without proper consent. The high court rejected Facebook’s bid to review the case, meaning the social media giant will likely have to face the multibillion-dollar class-action lawsuit over whether it violated an Illinois privacy law. The case, Facebook vs. Patel, hinges on a question over whether Facebook violated Illinois law when it implemented a photo-tagging feature that recognized users’ faces and suggested their names without obtaining adequate consent.”

IT’S ALMOST LIKE THEY’RE A PACK OF TOOLS:

ANALYSIS: TRUE. Bernie Sanders doesn’t want to win.

On Sunday, Sanders’s surrogates released a campaign memo accusing Joe Biden of ‘a big corruption problem’. The memo, published by Zephyr Teachout in the Guardian, flamed Biden for perfecting ‘the art of taking big contributions, then representing his corporate donors at the cost of middle- and working-class Americans’. Less than day later, Bernie himself personally apologized for the hurt caused to Biden, even as his rabid online base cheered the op-ed. ‘It is absolutely not my view that Joe is corrupt in any way. And I’m sorry that that op-ed appeared,’ Sanders told CBS News.

And then Tuesday, Gamma Clinton reared her defeated head once more to promote a HULU documentary. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she says in the documentary that Bernie ‘was in Congress for years. He had one senator support him. Nobody likes him, nobody wants to work with him, he got nothing done…it’s all just baloney and I feel so bad that people got sucked into it.’

Hillary gave Bernie yet another fresh opportunity to paint himself as the angry outsider, yet again fighting a corrupt and rigged primary process, and yet again contending with an establishment that wants nothing more than to see his campaign die a quick and silent death. Sound familiar?

If Bernie is afraid to mix it up with Joe Biden, how on earth can he position himself as beating Trump? And how can he placate the angriest elements of his base and campaign staff?

TROLL LEVEL: WASHINGTON FREE BEACON. CNN Brings on Hard-Hitting White House Correspondent to Join Jim Acosta.

Indeed, Jen [Rubin]. For so many reasons, this is a home-run hire for CNN. It’s almost unfair that the outlet that already boasts Jim Acosta has added this giant of straight-down-the-middle reporting to its roster.

[John] Harwood is a well-sourced veteran of Washington who can appeal to the leading experts for their insights. For instance, on Sept. 21, 2015, Harwood emailed Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta for advice on what to ask Jeb Bush during his interview the following day. Incredible access!

MASCOTS OF THE ANOINTED: Swedish Child-Priestess Greta Thunberg Goes to Davos and Scolds Us All Some More.

This kid is in for a shock when she grows up. Because she’s going to grow up. The adults who stole her childhood will have died off, but the planet will still be here. How will she reconcile the resulting cognitive dissonance? Will she acknowledge the truth, or will she find more excuses to believe the lie? That’ll be up to her, once she’s no longer being exploited for political purposes.

Yes, Mascots of the Anointed have a rough go of it, once their freshness date expires.

LIKE “SWIFTBOATING,” A “CONSPIRACY THEORY” IS JUST A TRUTHFUL REPORT THAT DEMOCRATS ACTED BADLY: John Solomon: Joe Biden’s ‘conspiracy theory’ memo to U.S. media doesn’t match the facts.

It is irrefutable, and not a conspiracy theory, that Joe Biden bragged in this 2018 speech to a foreign policy group that he threatened in March 2016 to withhold $1 billion in U.S. aid to Kiev if then-Ukraine’s president Petro Poroshenko didn’t immediately fire Shokin.

“I said, ‘You’re not getting the billion.’ I’m going to be leaving here in, I think it was about six hours. I looked at them and said: ‘I’m leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you’re not getting the money,’” Biden told the 2018 audience in recounting what he told Poroshenko

“Well, son of a bitch, he got fired. And they put in place someone who was solid at the time,” Biden told the Council on Foreign Relations event.

But the purpose of the memo isn’t to convince reporters, it’s just to get them to fall in line with the Dem narrative.
