Sometimes, we are presented with opportunities that could change how we view the world outside the bubble of our daily lives. One event can change how we see people, talk to people, and understand people and where they live, work, struggle, pray, and raise their families.
Too often, those opportunities are ignored, set aside because they take time and because there is no instant benefit, no immediate gratification, nothing tangible that shouts, “Look what I did.”
Last week, Democratic nominee Joe Biden made his first trip out of his Delaware basement since he accepted his party’s nomination by going to Pittsburgh, located in the state of his birth — a part of his background he often boasts about.
He flew in, stood in front of Mill 19, a multiuse office building that once employed 5,000 steelworkers but now is an incubator for robots doing manufacturing jobs. In short, there are no blue-collar jobs in this facility.
He gave out some Mineo’s Pizza to firefighters, spoke for 12 minutes about violence in other cities that did not happen here, made a controversial claim about supporting fracking that counters some of what he has said before, took no questions from the press, and flew out.
It was an event that media mavens in Washington and New York praised profusely, which is something you’d expect from the people who live, operate, and socialize with the same people who give Biden advice.

HMM: China celebrates safe landing of secretive spacecraft as ‘important breakthrough.’
Very little is known about the spacecraft, including even its basic design. There are no picture or renders of the craft, but there have been rumors it is a spaceplane similar to the Air Force’s X-37B. A Chinese military source told the South China Morning Post they could not provide details on the mission but that “maybe you can take a look at the US X-37B.”
The X-37B is a spaceplane roughly a quarter the size of America’s Space Shuttle orbiters, a series of spaceplanes that were launched into orbit from rockets between 1981 and 2011, and were able to glide back to Earth and land on runways to be repaired and reused. The X37-B follows the same basic operation but is always uncrewed. The US Air Force describes the X37-B as an “experimental test program” that is being used to demonstrate reusable space technologies.
The relatively abrupt test of the mysterious Chinese craft may surprise some, but it tracks with the country’s ambitions to create reusable spaceplanes, says Andrew Jones, a freelance journalist who follows China’s space program. Jones told The Verge last week: “There’s lots of interest in China in spaceplanes.” He added: “They’ve said that they’re going to do this, and they seem to be doing it kind of somewhat on schedule.”

COPLAND DISASSEMBLES AMERICA’S RULING CLASS: Manhattan Institute Senior Fellow James Copland’s new book, “The Unelected: How An Unaccountable Elite Is Governing America,” is getting and fully deserves outstanding reviews like this one by Law & Liberty’s Mark Pulliam.
My own view is that pretty much anything Copland pens about lawyers, class-action litigation, preservation of the Republic, contemporary politics and so forth is must-reading.

IMPRESSIVE: ‘Sci-Fi Awesome’—A U.S. Army Howitzer Just Shot Down A Cruise Missile.
The cannon-based air-defense was part of a two-day trial of a new command system the Air Force is developing. The Advanced Battle Management System is an artificial intelligence that takes sensor data from a whole bunch of different sources—satellites, stealth fighters, blimps, ground-based radar installations—and combines it.
What results is a digital picture of a whole battlefield. The A.I. then identifies the friendly forces that could destroy a particular target and gives commanders a menu from which to pick a shooter.
ABMS is big, ambitious and controversial. The Air Force wants it—and is willing to give up existing command planes in order to free up the money. Congress is skeptical the new control system will work as well as the Air Force insists it will.
It worked well enough to help a howitzer shoot down a missile.
Most impressive.
