LIZ SHELD’S MORNING BRIEF: Cheating scandal, Lisa Page and much, much more. “I didn’t know this kind of thing was an FBI matter, but I guess we should all be thankful the FBI isn’t busy trying to overthrow an election.”

Heh.

BYRON YORK: Key House Republican on Pelosi impeachment pullback: ‘I don’t buy it.’

The reason, he explained, is not that he doubts Pelosi’s sentiments. It is that he doubts her ability to impose her will on House Democrats.

“The Speaker, while she controls the House, doesn’t control her own party,” Brady said. “And there is a real rush to impeachment here in the House. We’re seeing that with [Judiciary Committee chairman] Jerry Nadler, we’re seeing it with the investigative committees, we’re seeing it in the Ways and Means Committee.”

Brady pointed to recent moments when Democratic opposition forced Pelosi to back down from her personal positions. “The Speaker wasn’t for term limits; her party forced her to do it. She wasn’t for watering down the anti-Semitism resolution; her party forced her to do it. She’s not for Medicare-for-all; she says her party is forcing her to do it.”

Indeed, while no one knows the deepest feelings of each Democratic member, there is no doubt that Democratic voters, the ones who sent the current class to Congress, strongly favor impeachment. In exit polls from last November’s midterm elections, 77 percent of Democrats answered “Yes” to the question, “Should Congress impeach Trump?”

“She’s trying to tamp this down for political purposes, as she was before the election,” Brady said. “But her conference just seems hell-bent on this rush to impeachment.”

The Girondists always lose out to the Montagnards eventually.

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: Never What? “Schoenfeld only fuels the popular perception of The Bulwark Never Trumpers as an angry, coastal elite who are anguished that their warnings about Trump were ignored by both hoi polloi and their conservative ‘grifters and trolls.’ In careerist fury, he now damns others for his own self-immolation — as if the country must suffer for the sins of not listening to his own genius, which would probably have given the country a 16-year Obama-Clinton regnum. That Never Trumpers at The Bulwark were wrong about the Trump nomination, the general election, and the first two years of the Trump administration seems only to have fueled their spitefulness.”

BRAVE SIR ROBIN BRAVELY BACKED AWAY: Adam Schiff says impeachment gamble not worth it without ‘very graphic evidence.’

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., rushed to the defense of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday, saying only “graphic evidence” would warrant an impeachment gamble against President Trump.

“In the absence of very graphic evidence, it would be difficult to get the support in the Senate needed to make an impeachment successful. Again, my feeling is let’s see what Bob Mueller produces. But the evidence would have to be pretty overwhelming,” Schiff told CNN.

Across the caucus, Democrats have been asked to comment about Pelosi, D-Calif., abruptly shutting the door on impeachment in an interview published Monday.

He’s letting the flock down as easily as possible.

SCHOOL DISCIPLINE: Even Democrats can agree that the Obama-Era school discipline policy was counter-productive. And contrary to law I might add.  Thank you, Secretary DeVos for withdrawing it!

SO DEREGULATE: Some Regulations Deter Private Schools from Participating in Voucher Programs.

Our overall results suggest additional government regulations, beyond those that all private schools face, largely reduce the number of options available to families. But it is possible that regulations were more likely to deter lower-quality private schools from participating in the programs. If so, regulations could have increased the quality level of the private schools participating in the hypothetical voucher programs, on average.

However, using four different measures of school quality – Google review scores, GreatSchools review scores, tuition levels, and enrollment trends – we did not find any statistically significant evidence to suggest that any of the regulations improved the average quality of participating private schools by disproportionately deterring lower-quality schools from participating.

If the purpose of regulation is to reduce participation and enrollment, rather than to increase educational opportunities, then it’s working splendidly.

BERNARD GOLDBERG: Hollywood Conservatives Live in Fear.

Once again we learn that conservatives in Hollywood mostly stay silent on the issues of the day. To do otherwise could cost them their next gig, or even their career.

Goldberg spoke to shy Hollywood conservatives as well as their ideological foes – Tinsel Town progressives. Like the best reporters, he doesn’t just engage one side of the aisle. What he found, though, should be alarming to anyone who clings to this country’s core principles.

“If you’re a conservative in Tinsel Town, it’s best to fly under the radar,” he warns. It’s why Goldberg doesn’t “name names,” affording his sources a measure of protection. It’s the kind of protection no Hollywood liberal asks for, or requires.

Today’s talent can share the most hateful, biased commentary and not fear a single repercussion. Just ask Tom Arnold, Joss Whedon or Jimmy “Blackface” Kimmel.

A Hollywood conservative, by comparison, must stay in the ideological closet lest he or she incur the industry’s wrath.

It’s not easy being a Friend of Abe.

NEVER TRUST A “MALE FEMINIST:” Justin Trudeau’s Feminist Brand Is Imploding. “Women were losing confidence in Trudeau’s government long before this crisis, with the margin between Liberal and Conservative female voters having narrowed considerably in the past year. But over the past month, Trudeau’s feminist branding has splintered.”

Well, Prime Minister Zoolander could only hold the attention so long.

ON THIS DAY IN 1781: Astronomer William Herschel discovered Uranus. Or more precisely, he discovered that the tiny point of light that was visible to the naked eye was not a star (though at first he thought it was a comet).

Herschel wanted to name it for his patron, King George III. Had that name caught on instead of the one that did, it would have deprived generations of schoolboys of much-needed amusement.

WHY IS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY SUCH A CESSPIT OF RACISM? Sanders’s deputy press secretary apologizes for questioning American Jews’ ‘dual allegiance’ to Israel.

While Jews have rightly been worrying about antisemitism from “white nationalists,” who are a small group but are prone to deadly violence, they shouldn’t be entirely preoccupied with them. It’s worth keeping in mind that the two most antisemitic demographic groups in the U.S. are Muslims (I can’t find data separating U.S.-born and immigrant Muslims, but antisemitism is almost certainly much higher among immigrants) and Hispanic immigrants. Ilhan Omar is the former, Sanders’ deputy press secretary the latter.

That’s not to impugn either of these groups, as I know many lovely people from both of them, a majority aren’t antisemitic, and assimilation will reduce the rates significantly, as a vast gap in rates of antisemitism between U.S. and foreign-born Hispanics shows. But meanwhile, we shouldn’t be shocked if views that are at least unremarkable in certain strong Democratic constituencies are repeated unashamedly in public. And the least the Democratic Party could do is make clear they are unacceptable, as opposed to hedging as the Democrats did with Omar.

UPDATE: As several people have noted to me, the purported apology wasn’t actually an apology: “In a conversation on Facebook, I used some language that I see now was insensitive. Issues of allegiance and loyalty to one’s country come with painful history.” And what white nationalist violence? Have you already forgotten Pittsburgh?
