OPEN THREAD: Because I care about you and want you to be happy.

THE JOURNALISTIC LEFT IS COMPOSED OF IGNORANT, HYSTERICAL CHILDREN: The ridiculous storm over Trump’s latest move against anti-Semitism.

Heck, even one of my fellow lawprofs (not one from Tennessee I hasten to add) was calling Trump Hitler over this until I shot him down. But to its credit, Vox has a decent piece — yes, that’s right, the NYT coverage is so bad it’s being debunked by Vox –which contains this jewel-like line given the Hitler comparisons: “The draft executive order largely restates the Obama administration’s position.” The main thing Trump is doing is turning it from nonbinding “guidance” into an Executive Order.

UPDATE: Twitter blue-checks did not cover themselves in glory in the first 24 hours after the Times tweet. This is a good explainer by Ted Frank. It’s also proof that if you start from the axiom that Trump is Hitler, every fact becomes evidence that Trump is Hitler. Of course, only an idiot would start with that axiom, but idiots abound. “The refusal to apply Occam’s razor was astonishing. What was more likely: That someone without legal training was misunderstanding an executive order they hadn’t seen, or that a bipartisan coalition of Jewish policymakers persuaded Jared Kushner to convince Trump to issue the preliminary groundwork for a 21st century version of the Nuremberg Laws in America? You can guess which tack got the most retweets and likes. With real anti-Semitism on the march and on a day when gunmen targeted a Jersey City Kosher Supermarket, murdering four people (three of whom were Jewish), a chorus instead rose up against Jewish allies engaging in a largely symbolic legal exercise.”

JERSEY CITY SHOOTER WAS ONE-TIME BLACK HEBREW ISRAELITE:

If the name Black Hebrew Israelites sounds familiar, that’s because members of that group were the ones who screamed bigotry at Nick Sandmann and the rest of the Covington Catholic kids at the Lincoln Memorial back in January… As Sandmann noted a few days later:

“They called us ‘racists,’ ‘bigots,’ ‘white crackers,’ ‘f*gg*ts’ and ‘incest kids.’ They also taunted an African-American student from my school by telling him that we would ‘harvest his organs.’ I have no idea what that insult means, but it was startling to hear,” Sandmann wrote.

Nice guys. And then, of course, 99% of the news outlets in the entire world tried to ruin Sandmann’s life because he was wearing a MAGA hat as he smiled awkwardly at a Native American man who was banging a drum in his face.* The Black Hebrew Israelites who started the whole thing were almost entirely ignored. They didn’t fit the narrative.

I suspect that’s what will happen with this shooting, too.

As Ace writes, “Enjoy the last few moments you’ll ever hear of this story… they’re black, not white, and affiliated with leftwing politics, not Trump, so we won’t hear about this any more, and the only thing we will hear about is not hate, but GUNS. Ben Shapiro made that point last week — whenever the killer is someone associated with part of the Democrat coalition, or expresses leftwing sentiments online, suddenly the media doesn’t want to talk about hatred or political rhetoric inspiring violence, but only Deadly Demon-Guns.”

Which isn’t too far off from Jon Gabriel’s 2015 chart on how the DNC-MSM covers shootings:

Oh, and incidentally: Jersey City shooters are also suspects in murder of NJ Uber driver.

ANALYSIS: TRUE. The Person Of The Year Is Not Greta Thunberg. It’s The Hong Kong Protester.

TIME magazine has named its Person of the Year, a teenager who skipped school to travel around the world telling people that they are horrible and the planet is doomed. It’s a living. Perhaps her Malthusian visions will be fulfilled by future experience. But it’s not very likely.

In fact, her position is at odds with what we know: that a more responsible approach to climate requires action from China and India, not the West. But that makes for less convenient judgmental events, what with having to ride a catamaran across the Pacific instead of the Atlantic. She sticks to challenges with less risk, like speaking to groups of people who entirely agree with her.

Henry Luce’s 1920s prospectus for TIME magazine included this “list of prejudices”:

-A belief that the world is round and an admiration of the statesman’s view of all the world.
-A general distrust of the present tendency toward increasing interference by government.
-A prejudice against the rising cost of government.
-Faith in the things which money cannot buy.
-A respect for the old, particularly in manners.
-An interest in the new, particularly in ideas.

In keeping with that mission, the Person of the Year we ought to hail is the protester in Hong Kong.

Time founder Henry Luce (1888-1967), whose parents were Presbyterian missionaries to China — Luce was born in Tengchow, China — used Time magazine to push back against communist China in the postwar 1940s and ‘50s. But his worldview hasn’t been part of Time since the Kennedy era.  Like the NBA not wishing to anger their Chinese masters, perhaps today’s “woke” Time staffers were worried that celebrating the Hong Kong protestors would be too embarrassingly close to the magazine’s roots as a center-right anti-socialist publication.

GREAT MOMENTS IN BRAND SYNERGY: Good Morning America Corporate Shills Hail ‘Great Leader’ of Disney Being Named ‘Businessperson of the Year.’

On December 3, GMA devoted a nearly five-minute segment to promoting a new book and corresponding Disney+ documentary called One Day at Disney, which amounted to nothing more than free advertising for the company.

On November 12, the morning show turned from a supposed news program into an infomercial for the launch of Disney+, with a stunning 17 minutes of air time devoted to the new corporate product.

At what point do the journalists at ABC express some shame at having to constantly act like ticket takers at the entrance to Disney World?

Shame is not an emotion that’s naturally occurring inside the House of Stephanopoulos.

ONCE COULD BE AN HONEST MISTAKE; TWICE IS EITHER GROSS INCOMPETENCE, GROSS DISHONESTY, OR BOTH: The New York Times Continues to Misreport the Trump Executive Order on Antisemitism:

After causing the freakout, the Times improved but didn’t really correct its piece, and was pilloried on Twitter, including by liberals, for its bad reporting.

Unfortunately, this didn’t dissuade the Times, which tonight posted a hit piece on Ken Marcus, head of the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights, for his role in the executive order. You will not learn from this piece that the executive order originated in language from a bill sponsored by Democrats, nor that it has direct antecedents in Obama and Bush II administration policy. Instead, the reporter, Erica Green, asserts that Marcus “has asserted a Jewish ‘national origin’ by fiat,” as if it didn’t reflect policy established in the Bush administration and adhered to by the Obama administration.

MORE ON THE NY TIMES-INSPIRED FREAKOUT OVER TRUMP’S EXECUTIVE ORDER ON ANTISEMITISM: Not only is there nothing sinister about the order, there is nothing novel; the Bush Administration’s and Obama Administration’s Department of Educations had both stated that Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act protects Jews from discrimination based on race/national origin, if the perpetrator is basing his discrimination on perceptions of race or national origin rather than hostility to the Jewish religion. The only thing new in the Trump definition is that it’s official policy via executive order, rather than the subject of informal guidance from the Office of Civil Rights.

BUT REMEMBER, ALL THE BEST PEOPLE KEEP TELLING US THAT TRUMP HAS UNDERMINED THE CONSTITUTION AND OUR INSTITUTIONS:

IT’S NOT A “LOOPHOLE.” FBI warned six months ago about loophole Pensacola shooter used to obtain a gun.

The law in question was drafted so as to grant the hunting privileges of gentlemen to foreign visitors, on the assumption that the real threat to safety and order came from ill-bred American yahoos. Here’s a summary:

Under U.S.code, foreign nationals who have been lawfully admitted to the USA can purchase and possess a gun under a few conditions:

If they were admitted to the USA for lawful hunting or sporting purposes, or if they are in possession of a U.S.-issued hunting license or permit.

If they are an official representative of a foreign government who is accredited with the U.S. government; if they are accredited with a government-partnered international organization headquartered in the USA; or if they are in transit to or from a country where they are accredited.

If they are an official of a foreign government or a distinguished foreign visitor as designated by the U.S. Department of State.

If they are a foreign law enforcement officer of a friendly foreign government entering the USA on official law enforcement business.

A “loophole” is an accidental omission. This is a policy choice, one that maybe made more sense before some of our foreign visitors or representatives of friendly governments turned out to be Islamist terrorists.
