ROGER KIMBALL: The embarrassment of Fredo Cuomo.

As I write, thousands of Chinese troops are massing on the border of Hong Kong, but this week the world is mesmerized by the spectacle of CNN anchor Fredo Cuomo screaming threats and obscenities at some hapless chap who called him ‘Fredo.’ What Donald Trump accurately described as Fredo Cuomo’s ‘lunatic ranting, raving, & cursing,’ did not, as far as I know, include the painful objection that ‘I can handle things. I’m smart. Not like everybody says — like dumb. I’m smart and I want respect!’

Fredo’s exchange did, however, include various colorful threats — mostly involving a staircase — a lesson in scatological imprecation, an almost David Mamet-like deployment of the ‘F-word’ and its cognates.

Speaking of words so awful that they must, in polite society (and even when discussing people who work for CNN, the network that helps to make waiting for airplanes so taxing) — speaking, I say, of Voldemort words that must not be named, Fredo screamed at his interlocutor that calling someone of Italian heritage ‘Fredo’ was an ethnic slur, akin to calling someone who is black the ‘N-word.’

Rush Limbaugh — who was apparently the first to call Cuomo ‘Fredo’— pointed out that it is simply ‘absurd’ to say that calling someone ‘Fredo’ is an ethnic slur. It has nothing to do with ethnicity. It is simply a common or garden variety insult, casting aspersions on the intelligence, competence, and stability of the person so denominated.

CNN is apparently having a rare moment of lucidity if this report is true: CNN now ‘embarrassed’ by Chris Cuomo’s ‘Fredo’ flap.

One insider said they personally thought the run-in was “great” and that Cuomo would get a pass from higher-ups because “he’s BFFs with [CNN president Jeff] Zucker.” Another said the newsroom chatter was that “everyone thinks it’s fine to stand up to trolls, but it escalated way past where it needed to.” While they said Cuomo generally has a good reputation with the staff, “It was embarrassing.” They added, “It was an unforced error, and he gave the right — and the president — ammunition to use against him and CNN.”

Fredo stupidly failed to heed the advice that the Don told another of his sons: “Santino, never let anyone outside the family know what you are thinking.”

OPEN THREAD: Too bad there’s nothing happening in the news, but try to find something to discuss.

MORE ON THE SAN ANTONIO ICE OFFICE SHOOTING:

Let’s keep in mind that this isn’t an isolated incident. Here are the attacks on ICE offices just from this summer.

Aug. 13 – San Antonio, TX
July 16 – Washington, DC
July 14 – Tacoma, WA
July 12 – Aurora, CO

The thing is, you can’t have it both ways. If you’re going to blame Donald Trump’s rhetoric on immigration for shootings targeting minorities, you can’t simply turn around and ignore this. We have Democratic presidential candidates, “squad” activists, cable news anchors and editorials from major newspapers constantly demonizing ICE, calling for it to be abolished and blaming all manner of human misery on immigration enforcement offices who are simply upholding the law.

How can you observe all of this in context and not blame their rhetoric for the fact that people are shooting up or trying to bomb ICE offices and last night came within inches of murdering someone? The answer is that you can’t, at least if you want to label yourself as an unbiased observer of events.

Well, you can always label yourself an unbiased observer. But we all know the reality:

TO BE FAIR, TRUTH HAS NEVER BEEN A BIG THING WITH THEM: Mamet Speaks Bitter Truth In New Play, And Leftist Critics Aren’t Happy About It. “What Mamet has accomplished with this play — ostensibly a theatrical treatment of the birth of the #MeToo movement — is to present the liberal elite mindset for what it is: self-centred virtue signalling coupled with a complete abdication of personal responsibility. Offended critics will protest that sexual abuse is too serious and sacred an issue for such a comic treatment, that the politically incorrect dialogue is unacceptable in our safe space society, that the play is unfair to the female perspective, and they’ll even accuse it of being a veiled defence of Harvey Weinstein (which is utter nonsense). The truth is that Mamet’s exposure of the liberal-left doctrine as morally contradictory at its core has hit a nerve.”

GREEN NUDE EEL SNEAK PREVIEW: The world’s first solar road has turned out to be a colossal failure that’s falling apart and doesn’t generate enough energy, according to a report.

Unexpectedly.

Related! Apparently earth’s CO2 levels are as high as they were 800,000 years ago and inquiring minds want to know who was responsible back then.

No doubt Fred and Barney lighting up their Winstons at the quarry contributed mightily to prehistoric global warming.

REMINDER: MEDICAL MISTAKES KILL MORE PEOPLE THAN GUNS: He said something was stuck in his throat after surgery. The doctors didn’t believe him. It was his dentures:

The 72-year-old man’s initial surgery was to remove a harmless lump in his abdominal wall. He returned to the hospital six days later complaining of blood in his mouth and difficulties breathing and swallowing, which had prevented him from eating solid food.

Doctors in the emergency room were unable to diagnose the problem and the unnamed man was sent home with a prescription for mouthwash, antibiotics and steroids.

He returned two days later with worsening symptoms and was admitted to the hospital with suspected aspiration pneumonia — a severe chest infection.

Eventually a diagnostic procedure identified a semicircular object lying across his vocal cords, which had caused internal blistering and swelling.

The man was subsequently rushed into surgery to remove the false teeth. He remained in the hospital for another six days. He returned suffering complications on multiple occasions over the following month, before eventually healing.

The man said he knew his dentures had gone missing during his initial hospital stay, but he didn’t realize they had slid down his throat during surgery.

Sheesh. And congrats for missing the problem when he came back.
