DISPATCHES FROM THE EDUCATION APOCALYPSE: NYU Cancels Former New Yorker Fact-Checker Talia Lavin’s Journalism Class.

The “fact-checker” description in the headline is a nice touch, as the subhead notes that “Lavin left The New Yorker last year after falsely saying an ICE agent had a Nazi tattoo.”

The article goes on to note that NYU cancelled the class “Lavin was scheduled to teach this fall after only two students signed up.”

WELL, GOOD: An Experimental Ebola Cure May Also Protect Against Nipah Virus.

An experimental drug has protected monkeys against infection with Nipah virus, a lethal disease and emerging pandemic threat for which there is no approved vaccine or cure, scientists reported on Wednesday.

The antiviral drug, remdesivir, is also being tested against the Ebola virus in the outbreak now underway in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The only current treatment for Nipah virus infection is a monoclonal antibody that is still experimental; it was tested during an outbreak in India last year.

In the new trial, eight African green monkeys were given lethal doses of Nipah virus. Half of them later got intravenous remdesivir. All four monkeys that got the drug survived; the four that did not died within eight days.

If the drug wins approval for use against Nipah, “it will give us an extra treatment that could be used relatively quickly,” said Emmie de Wit, a virologist at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and one of the study’s lead authors. “The average person who reaches a hospital dies within two days, so it’s hard to protect them once they’re infected.”

Faster, please.

JIM TREACHER: Tarpgate: Yet Another Outrage That Wasn’t.

The most surprising thing about the Trump presidency isn’t Trump. He hasn’t changed, and he’s not going to change. The most surprising thing is how low the press is willing to go just to pester him. I really didn’t think they could embarrass themselves this badly. They still can’t get over Hillary’s humiliating loss, so they spend every waking moment proving they hate Trump as much as they’re supposed to hate him. They’re so addicted to gotchas that they’re now obsessed with… a tarp.

If the Dems want to make a comeback, all they have to do is stop acting crazy. So far, no good.

So true.

GET WOKE, GO BROKE? Disney CEO Signals Withdrawal From Georgia Over Abortion Ban.

Walt Disney’s goal in the last years of his life was to make Disneyworld the most family-friendly amusement park on earth. Visiting there last year, I was reminded of the tension between his vision, and those who implement it today. (Not to mention the tension between the Disney parks and other Disney assets such as then-uber-woke-ESPN, and ABC, the House of Stephanopoulos.) I wonder how much longer it can hold?

KATIE PAVLICH: Where is the media’s explanation for Avenatti?

Now that he faces 400 years in federal prison for a series of crimes, reflection from those who promoted the fraudster is warranted. Unsurprisingly, his hundreds of appearances are still being justified.

“There are lots and lots of reasons why Avenatti was newsworthy when he was representing Stormy Daniels. Journalists did their jobs and questioned him — some more effectively than others,” Stelter wrote in his newsletter, comparing Avenatti to President Trump and accusing others of “distorting” his comments about the lawyer.

“Some folks have been distorting my comment last September about Avenatti. My thesis back then, which still holds, is that all future U.S. presidents will be television stars of some sort. TV star power will be a prerequisite for the presidency. [That’s why] I told Avenatti ‘one reason I’m taking you seriously as a contender is because of your presence on cable news,’ ” he continued. “Obviously I’m not taking him seriously anymore, but I own that comment. He showed a Trump-like mastery of the media last year.”

Newsrooms built Avenatti and yet, they’ve been interestingly silent — probably out of embarrassment — about the latest developments.

Nah. If they were embarrassed, they’d apologize and try to learn from their mistakes. Avenatti no longer dominates CNN/MSNBC because he stopped being useful, but the next Avenatti is never much further away than the end of the next commercial break.
