THE SUICIDE OF LIBERALISM: “If only ‘fascists’ will stand up to the excesses of liberalism, then people will seek out fascists.”

At the Bulwark (I know, but stick with me on this one), Jonathan Last writes:

Washingtonian has an amazing piece from a mother whose teenage son descended into the alt-right.

The story is what you’d expect: Nice, progressive family has a nice progressive boy. But then something goes wrong and he strays from the path and starts hanging out with racists.

But the something in this story is pretty forking important. Here’s the precipitating event:

Sam was 13, barely a month into eighth grade. In the taxonomy of our local public school, his close group of friends was tagged edgy and liberal: One of them came out as gay during a class presentation; another identified as trans for a while. Their group-text chain pulsed 24-7 with observations about alternative music and the robotic conformity of other classmates. Standard stuff for sensitive middle-schoolers.One morning during first period, a male friend of Sam’s mentioned a meme whose suggestive name was an inside joke between the two of them. Sam laughed. A girl at the table overheard their private conversation, misconstrued it as a sexual reference, and reported it as sexual harassment. Sam’s guidance counselor pulled him out of his next class and accused him of “breaking the law.” Before long, he was in the office of a male administrator who informed him that the exchange was “illegal,” hinted that the police were coming, and delivered him into the custody of the school’s resource officer. At the administrator’s instruction, that man ushered Sam into an empty room, handed him a blank sheet of paper, and instructed him to write a “statement of guilt.”

No one called me as this unfolded, even though Sam cried for about six hours straight as staff members parked him in vacant offices to keep him away from other students. When he stepped off the bus that afternoon and I asked why his eyes were so swollen, he informed me that he would probably be suspended, but possibly also expelled and arrested.

Mom then writes that Sam “found people to talk to on Reddit and 4chan,” and things go downhill from there.

I disagree with the headline of Last’s article — they’re not liberals, they’re leftists, behaving as leftists always do. The scene above, after a 13-year old boy behaves like 13 year old boys always do, sound like the Stasi overhearing a joke scene from The Lives of Others — except that it’s arguably worse; it’s American teachers acting like the Stasi when dealing with teenagers.

It’s the Bulwark, so there’s the expected extreme Trump-bashing at the end of the piece, but read the whole thing.

SCREWTOP LAUNCH: An E-2C Hawkeye early warning and attack aircraft takes off from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.

OPEN THREAD: Make tonight special.

CHECK OUT ‘ARCHITECTS OF WOKE’ AND ITS EXPOSE OF SLAVOJ ZIZEK: This is episode two of the Capital Research Center’s (CRC) fine Dangerous Documentaries series.

Zizek is a Marxist rock star, at least on campus and in the MSM. Scott Walter, CRC’s president, is the executive producer and the result makes clear there is a very dark side to the rock star.

IT WAS A SCAM FROM THE VERY BEGINNING: Steele’s stunning pre-FISA confession: Informant needed to air Trump dirt before election. “Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Kathleen Kavalec’s written account of her Oct. 11, 2016, meeting with FBI informant Christopher Steele shows the Hillary Clinton campaign-funded British intelligence operative admitted that his research was political and facing an Election Day deadline. And that confession occurred 10 days before the FBI used Steele’s now-discredited dossier to justify securing a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant to surveil former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page and the campaign’s ties to Russia.”

I’VE POSTED ON THE BENEFITS OF PDE5 INHIBITORS (VIAGRA, CIALIS, ETC.) BEFORE, but here’s an article from the British Medical Journal showing that men who took them post-heart-attack had much lower death rates, and the more they took, the better they did.

VIA FACEBOOK MEMORIES, AN EXCELLENT RECIPE FOR REMOULADE FROM THE LATE, AND MISSED, KARL BOCK, AKA “CHEF MOJO.”

Creole Remoulade Sauce

My uncle Kent requested this. It’s the remoulade that I serve with my crab cakes. It’s been adapted over the years from a recipe by Chef Paul Prudhomme, one of my culinary heroes. His original recipe was all the ingredients on top of an egg/oil emulsification. The food safety types cringe at that sort of thing (Yeah, I’m lookin’ at you, Riddley…), so I adapted it to use mayo. And, really. There’s only one mayo that’s worth a damn, and that’s Duke’s. Look for it. It has the taste that makes everything Southern.

The secret to this recipe is the lemon. Half a lemon, seeded. Literally. Skin, pith and flesh. It gives the recipe a wonderful bitter tang.

1/2 cup scallion greens, chopped
1/4 cup parsley, chopped
1/4 cup celery, chopped
1/4 cup horseradish
1/2 lemon, seeded
1 bay leaf, crumbled
2 T Zatarain’s Creole mustard (sub Pomerey)
4 T catsup
1 T Tabasco sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 t Spanish sweet paprika
1 t salt
1 t fresh ground pepper
1/3 cup Duke’s mayo

Take all of the ingredients and process them until smooth. Makes around 1 and a half cups. Store in the fridge.

Enjoy.

EVERYTHING SETH MEYERS SAID ABOUT ILHAN OMAR IS WRONG:

“I do think it’s fairly dangerous and you brought it up after Congresswoman Omar had some death threats against her,” Meyers lectured [Meghan] McCain, who held her own in the back and forth. “Do you think, you know, she has obviously now stated that she needs to be more careful with her language, don’t you think other people who talk about her need to be more thoughtful as well? Or do you stand by those comments of tying her to this, her rhetoric to this synagogue shooting?”

The first part of this rhetorical question is setting up a destructive standard to undermine debate. For one thing, a public figure—an elected official, no less—has no dispensation from criticism merely because some nut sends her a death threat. Nor is there any indulgence for being a Muslim woman or black women or white middle-aged man, or anyone else. Omar is a 37-year-old educated woman who was elected to the U.S. Congress, not a middle schooler playacting in the Model U.N.

The Corbynization of the Democratic Party continues apace.

YOUR DAILY TREACHER: NYT’s Breaking News from 2016: Trump Isn’t a Good Businessman.

This won’t change anybody’s mind, but that’s not the point anyway. It’s morale-building. The NYT is rallying the troops, reminding them that their enemy is wicked and their cause is just. #BillionDollarLoser is trending on Twitter, which surely annoys Trump the Twitter addict, so it’s a win.

If you can’t beat ‘im, troll ‘im.

In the Northeast Corridor, it’s trolls all the way down.

INSTANT TROLLING: It’s true that every now and then I have fun pulling my left-leaning friends’ chains by posting something on social media guaranteed to make them foam at the mouth and wet their pants. I know, it’s a bit cruel, like taunting a puppy, but there you have it.
Soooo, I saw this graphic from The Hill today:

And I just couldn’t help asking:

“Does this mean Democrats are naturally bigoted? The two African-American and one Latino candidate are at the bottom of the polls of likely Democratic registered voters.”

Try it yourself and watch the fun.

INTERNET OF THINGS: The end of Works With Nest could be trouble for smart homes.

Google’s integration of the Nest brand may have some downsides for smart home enthusiasts. The company has revealed that it’s phasing out its Works With Nest program in the summer in favor of a Works With Google Assistant framework. The new program will allow data sharing between connected devices and apps, but only for a handful of tightly screened partners, Google’s Rishi Chandra told Variety. While that’s potentially helpful for security and privacy, it’s also likely to break a number of smart home tie-ins — including some you may miss.

The change “will break IFTTT,” Chandra said. You couldn’t use the automation service to automatically turn up your Nest thermostat when you get home, for instance. Google Assistant’s routines are intended to fill the gaps, but this won’t help if you have a device or functionality that routines won’t address.

These kinds of changes aren’t always avoidable, and might be important when smart home privacy is becoming an important issue.

If privacy is a primary concern, you probably aren’t using Google IOT products, anyway — but the company is getting a nasty reputation for leaving users of its products in the lurch.
