YOU’RE (NOT) WATCHING PBS:

So conservatives never overthrew public broadcasting. NPR thrives. But PBS withered away. Oh, it still exists, and when a piece of luck like “Downton Abbey” comes its way, it can puff itself back up…to one twentieth the audience, and influence, it had a quarter century ago. PBS is now little more than America’s Official TV Network of White Guilt. To be fair, it also features Benny Goodman at pledge drive, Jewish guys in major league baseball history, and British drama, for which I thank them.

Go ahead, oppose them. Just don’t feed their delusions of grandeur. Public broadcasting was born in a 1950s world of limited information, limited bandwidth, and narrow choices. It dreamed of a world where you could be in Tupelo, Utica or Provo and still be able to see “Macbeth” on TV. In that world it had a real purpose. Today, you could be in Tupelo’s outer fringes and see virtually any version of Shakespeare ever filmed, on your phone, at any time of the day or night. PBS struggles with that new world. Wouldn’t it be wiser for them to declare victory over cultural deprivation, mission accomplished!–and then fold their tents for good?

Indeed. Even Sesame Street is now a Time-Warner-CNN-HBO production.

TREATING MEN’S DEPRESSION WITH TESTOSTERONE.

FLASHBACK: “Bourgeois culture is bad because it limits the flexibility of the elites. When the middle class was ascendant, it had the power to force bourgeois norms on elites, and even many of the poor. This led to social goods that people miss now, but it was also experienced as confining by those so constrained.” In America, remember, class war is disguised as culture war.

TRIED AND TRUE: Study: Surgery best treatment for appendicitis, not antibiotics. “A person suffering from an appendicitis should receive surgery and not try to treat the condition with antibiotics, a study said. The Stanford University School of Medicine study, published Wednesday in the Jama Network, said that treating an inflamed appendix with antibiotics is more costly than just having surgery, contradicting previous recent reports that suggest its better to treat appendicitis with antibiotics.”

AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION, RIP: “Future historians will have to reconstruct exactly how and why the tipping point has been reached, but the ACLU’s actions over the last couple of months show that the ACLU is no longer a civil libertarian organization in any meaningful sense, but just another left-wing pressure group, albeit one with a civil libertarian history.”

DISPATCHES FROM THE EDUCATION APOCALYPSE: “He was at an academic conference. He boarded a crowded elevator. Helpful person near buttons asked which floors people wanted. He couldn’t resist an old joke. ‘Lingerie, please.’ FATAL MISTAKE. The person near the buttons was a feminist sociologist.”

Or to put it another way:

MUST BE RACISM: Violence Breaks Out As Tijuana Residents Confront Migrants. “Mexican residents of Playas De Tijuana confronted Honduran migrants who had set up a makeshift camp at ‘Friendship Park’ in Playas De Tijuana. The Mexican residents demanded that the migrants leave the area.”

MARC CAPUTO IN POLITICO: ‘Nelson has no path’: Democrats admit Scott beats Florida icon.

But here’s my favorite part: “While party officials refused to discuss the hopelessness of the situation on the record, the Florida Democratic Party on Friday continued to fundraise off the recount, suggesting to donors that Nelson had a shot when his own top backers knew he didn’t.”
