GEORGE LEEF: Why Are Colleges Turning Into Police States? Too Many Administrators. “One reason why is that mid-level university administrators now hold so much power to control speech and behavior through speech codes and anti-harassment policies. As GMU law professor Todd Zywicki explained in this article, those people seldom have any strong attachment to unfettered discussion, but do have a strong preference for a campus with as little turmoil as possible.”

MY USA TODAY COLUMN: The Trump Wave And The Brexit Boom: Preference Cascades Now Led From The Bottom Up.
It used to be, of course, that the lower and middle classes were stuffy and constrained by social convention while the freethinkers at universities and in the ruling class got to experiment with unconventional ideas. If their experimenting got enough success, then it might eventually filter down to ordinary people. (The sexual revolution worked this way, more or less).
But now it’s our ruling class that is hidebound by political correctness, and it takes movement by the masses to give it permission to express a controversial view. That’s a major change, and it’s one that the ruling class isn’t likely to appreciate much. But having subjected itself to the chains of “acceptable” opinion, what can it do?
I should note, by the way, that this is reminiscent of the old Soviet collapse, where the intellectual classes were under such tremendously close control that it was the working class that took the lead.

ANOTHER DOMINO FALLS IN EUROPE AS BELGIUM CLOSES BORDERS TO BLOCK CALAIS MIGRANTS:
The Jungle is an ongoing condemnation of the French economy and prospects for France’s future: Even semi-literate migrants would rather sleep out in the cold and rain for a chance at making it to Britain than settle in France. Likely, that’s also why they’re headed to Belgium—which has other crossings to the UK.
More broadly, this news highlights the one thing the powers-that-be in Brussels and Berlin are right about with regard to the immigration crisis: Absent a pan-European solution, a lot of responses to the crisis will result simply in passing the problem around. Unfortunately, nobody—from the Visegrad countries in the East to France in the West—trusts the solutions that the German government and the EU have been putting forward. And so we continue to have cascading border closures and ever-more-permanent “temporary” measures.
It’s as if the Euro political class isn’t willing to do — or even to admit — what must be done.
HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: BRUTALLY HONEST OSCAR BALLOT — VOTER SKEWERS ‘REVENANT’ (“ROAD RUNNER MOVIE”), ‘BROOKLYN’ (“SENTIMENTAL DRIVEL”).
As Jonathan Last wrote a decade ago, “A survey of the muck soon to be celebrated at the Academy Awards confirms William Goldman’s sad truism: Every Oscar night you look back and realize that last year was the worst year in the history of Hollywood.”

And speaking of which, Mitt Romney Predicts ‘Bombshell’ in Trump’s Unreleased Tax Returns.
If so, Trump might want to get this out of the way now, considering the way the MSM pretended in lockstep that Romney’s “47 percent” nothingburger was the end of the world in 2012. On the other hand, if not his taxes, there’s no doubt the MSM will attempt to manufacture an October surprise out of thin air, no matter who the GOP candidate is.
HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE: University introduces website to report microaggressions.
The University of Michigan-Flint has launched a website where “students who experience any form of bias or micro-aggressions whatsoever” can tattle on members of their community.
In a campus-wide email sent Tuesday afternoon (and shared with the Washington Examiner), UM-Flint staff announced the new website and encouraged students, faculty and staff to begin reporting. They can even do so anonymously.
“At UM-Flint, we have a strong commitment to diversity and equity, and we strive to ensure that every student is able to participate and thrive in a culture of inclusion,” the email said. “Reporting bias against students is important because it allows us to keep track of how individual students and groups are experiencing our campus community, and better positions us to provide closely informed responses that will ensure an optimal living and learning environment for everyone.”
The entire community was called upon to report incidents of bias they witness, even if they weren’t the recipient of the alleged bias. Adding in that reports can be done anonymously, UM-Flint could predictably become a hotbed of politically and personally motivated revenge reports.
I encourage students to report every slight, however minor, aimed at white people, Republicans, and males.
UPDATE: From the comments: “Can’t we put Trump’s fans on the case? I am sure he is getting lots of disrespect on campus, and his fans surely have the energy to swamp the system.” Yeah, if someone insults your preferred candidate, that’s certainly a marginalizing microaggression.

FORMER DEM OFFICIAL: ‘GO F— YOURSELF, BERNIE:’
A former deputy executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) on Friday lashed out at presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders in a post on Medium titled “Go f— yourself, Bernie.”
The post was in response to Sanders implying that rival Hillary Clinton was praising President Obama in order to “win support from the African American community where the President is enormously popular.”
“It’s not just Black people that love Obama. The President is ‘enormously popular’ among all Democrats. Welcome to the Party,” former DCCC official Brandon English wrote in his post.
“Do you have any idea how belittling it is to reduce Obama to the President that the Blacks like?”
Oh, about as belittling as referring to a former first lady and the first female vice presidential nominee respectively as a “big f***ing whore,” and “David Duke in Drag,” and defining the April 2008 Democratic primary as “an election about whether the people of Pennsylvania hate blacks more than they hate women. And when I say people, I don’t mean people, I mean white men” – “bitter” white men who “cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.” That’s how Hillary Clinton and her supporters were attacked in 2008 when it was politically expedient, as a then-spokesman for General Electric said at the time, “Take her into a room and only he comes out.”
In other words, this is who they are and how they treat their allies — let alone the rest of us.
STILL NOT SURE WHY HE’S RUNNING, MYSELF: John Kasich: ‘I’m Not Exactly Sure What the Goal Is.’
John Kasich’s relentlessly positive stump speeches can often feel like motivational seminars. But on a rainy Tuesday night in Georgia, the man it sounded like Kasich was trying to motivate was himself.
“Here’s what I know. I know I’m doing my best,” he told a crowd of 100 supporters who had spilled outside of the Sandy Springs City Hall that was too small to accommodate all of those who had shown up. “I’m following the purpose that I think has been laid out for me. And to achieve that goal …” He paused briefly. “I’m not exactly sure what the goal is. Some might say it’s being elected president. Maybe it’s a different goal.”
Maybe it should be.

TROLL LEVEL, GRANDMASTER: Trump: Kerry probably hasn’t read the Bible.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump claimed Wednesday that Secretary of State John Kerry hasn’t read the Bible.
“Obviously Kerry did not read ‘The Art of the Deal,'” Trump told a religious audience in Virginia, referring to his own book before adding, “Probably didn’t read the Bible, either.”
Trump was criticizing the nuclear deal with Iran when he made the remark about Kerry, who is Catholic, while speaking at Regent University.
“Nobody reads the Bible more than me,” Trump claimed the previous day, before picking up his third consecutive win in the GOP primary with a dominant performance in the Nevada caucuses.
Kind of doubting that last bit.
