KUDOS TO DONALD TRUMP FOR DRAGGING THE MEDIA SPOTLIGHT TO THE FLOOD-RAVAGED AREAS AROUND BATON ROUGE — and shaming President Obama into belatedly scheduling a visit, though not until [tomorrow].

This Drudge-lanched Photoshop neatly sums up our retired president’s insular and elitist worldview:

I’VE HEARD A LOT ABOUT TRUMP’S ASSOCIATES, BUT THE PRESS DOESN’T SEEM NEARLY AS INTERESTED IN THIS: Huma Abedin worked at a radical Muslim journal for 10 years.

Hillary Clinton’s top campaign aide, and the woman who might be the future White House chief of staff to the first female US president, for a decade edited a radical Muslim publication that opposed women’s rights and blamed the US for 9/11.

One of Clinton’s biggest accomplishments listed on her campaign Web site is her support for the UN women’s conference in Bejing in 1995, when she famously declared, “Women’s rights are human rights.” Her speech has emerged as a focal point of her campaign, featured prominently in last month’s Morgan Freeman-narrated convention video introducing her as the Democratic nominee.

However, soon after that “historic and transformational” 1995 event, as Clinton recently described it, her top aide Huma Abedin published articles in a Saudi journal taking Clinton’s feminist platform apart, piece by piece. At the time, Abedin was assistant editor of the Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs working under her mother, who remains editor-in-chief. She was also working in the White House as an intern for then-First Lady Clinton.

Headlined “Women’s Rights are Islamic Rights,” a 1996 article argues that single moms, working moms and gay couples with children should not be recognized as families. It also states that more revealing dress ushered in by women’s liberation “directly translates into unwanted results of sexual promiscuity and irresponsibility and indirectly promote violence against women.” In other words, sexually liberated women are just asking to be raped.

Well, to be fair, that last was pretty much Hillary’s attitude toward Juanita Broaddrick, Kathleen Willey, et al.

COLIN POWELL: Clinton ‘trying to pin’ her email use on my advice.

On Sunday, Powell told the New York Post’s Page Six that Clinton was using her private email long before their meeting.

“The truth is she was using it for a year before I sent her a memo telling her what I did [during my term as Secretary of State],” he said.

“Her people have been trying to pin it on me.”

Why must Hillary Clinton blame her personal failures on a black man?

HOUSE OF WAR: Why Europe Can’t Find The Jihadis In Its Midst. Mitch Prothero reports how “A small, well-organized ISIS cell has been at work in the heart of Europe for years, recruiting criminals, exploiting freedom of movement, and evading counterterrorism efforts.”

More:

Since 2010, the Belgian and French authorities have been faced with a jihadist problem both more entrenched at home and more deeply interconnected to the international scene than had been previously understood. After last November’s attack on Paris, in which 130 people were killed, the full extent of the problem — not just for Belgium and France, but for the European Union — become tragically clear: An international network has exploited inherent security weaknesses of the EU’s open borders and brought French-speaking militants from Europe into the forefront of international terrorism. Between 2011 and the end of 2015, an estimated 12,000 people from 81 countries joined ISIS in Syria and Iraq, including 1,700 French and almost 500 Belgian residents, according to a comprehensive study of foreign fighters by the Soufan Group. The French S list — a database of suspected extremists and security threats — has grown to nearly 10,000 people, and those are only the people who have been identified.

ISIS militants threaten Europe with a wave of violence not seen since the heyday of 1970s political terrorism, and it appears to have the potential to be far more deadly. Previous terror campaigns led by Ireland’s IRA, Spain’s ETA, and Italy’s Red Brigades tended to have national aspirations and couldn’t exploit total freedom of movement between European countries.

FLASHBACK: The Hill: Senate Democrats block Zika agreement ahead of recess.

Senate Democrats on Tuesday blocked a deal providing funding for the fight against the Zika virus, virtually guaranteeing that Congress won’t get legislation to President Obama’s desk this month.

In a 52-48 vote, the Senate fell eight votes short of moving past a procedural hurdle against the House-Senate conference report on a military and veterans spending bill, which includes $1.1 billion to fund the Zika virus research.

Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) broke with his party and backed moving forward with the deal. GOP Sens. James Lankford (R-Okla.), Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) voted against the Zika deal. McConnell’s “no” vote allows him to bring the measure back up for another vote.

The vote leaves the current fight over the Zika virus at a standstill with days left before the July 4th recess.

The Dem line now is that the GOP is holding things up — by not doing what the Dem minority wants. It never goes that way when the parties are reversed. . . .

BECAUSE LEFTIES HAVE LOST THE CONFIDENCE TO PREACH WHAT THEY PRACTICE. Austin, Texas city council member offers good advice to kids, catches hell from the left:

During Austin’s Thursday City Council meeting many students spoke up from several city-funded groups asking for continued support.

It was what Austin City Council member Don Zimmerman said after the group of students addressed the council in Spanish that is sparking a lot of reaction on Twitter. The students were asking for funds to help their after-school program.

I’d ask for everyone here, including the children, when you grow up, I want to ask you to pledge to finish school, learn a trade, a skilled trade, get a college education, start a business, do something useful and produce something in your society so you don’t have to live off others. Thank you.” Zimmerman said.

Shortly after he made this comment boos could be heard reverberating throughout the audience.

But of course they were. Read the whole thing.

PIVOT: Why Louisiana governor says Trump’s visit was ‘helpful’

The visit, and the accompanying press coverage, were beneficial in drawing attention to the situation in Louisiana, Gov. Edwards said on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday, also noting his appreciation for a “good phone call” with vice presidential candidate Mike Pence, whom Edwards described as “sincere and genuine.”

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama has faced criticism from some for not yet visiting Louisiana, instead finishing out a family vacation to Martha’s Vineyard. (Governor Edwards has defended the president, saying that the White House offered to visit but the state told them to hold off until the immediate response phase was finished.) The president is scheduled to visit Louisiana next week.

Next week?

AT THIS POINT, IT’S REALLY JUST ABOUT MAKING THE RUBBLE BOUNCE: American journalism is collapsing before our eyes.

Donald Trump may or may not fix his campaign, and Hillary Clinton may or may not become the first female president. But something else happening before our eyes is almost as important: the complete collapse of American journalism as we know it.

The frenzy to bury Trump is not limited to the Clinton campaign and the Obama White House. They are working hand-in-hand with what was considered the cream of the nation’s news organizations.

The shameful display of naked partisanship by the elite media is unlike anything seen in modern America.

The largest broadcast networks — CBS, NBC and ABC — and major newspapers like The New York Times and Washington Post have jettisoned all pretense of fair play. Their fierce determination to keep Trump out of the Oval Office has no precedent.

Indeed, no foreign enemy, no terror group, no native criminal gang, suffers the daily beating that Trump does. The mad mullahs of Iran, who call America the Great Satan and vow to wipe Israel off the map, are treated gently by comparison.

Actually, I think the big inflection point was 2005. The Dan Rather forged-memo thing collapsed spectacularly, but the press realized during Katrina that if they just all repeated the same lies and ignored the people who proved them wrong, they could still move the polls. Before that, they had at least pretended to a degree of fairness, but the price of that in the Rather affair — letting a Republican take the White House — was too high for them to allow again. It was, in a sense, a foreshadowing of the “who’s gonna stop me?” nihilism of the Obama Administration, where traditions and legalities were thrown out the window in the name of power.

RESET: Battles rage in East Ukraine.

Anxious Ukrainian soldiers watched a burning building where vehicles have been destroyed. The footage released by Ukraine’s Defence Ministry claimed to show the aftermath of recent shelling by Russian-backed separatists. Since Friday at least two soldiers were reportedly killed, and eight wounded.

Additionally, several civilians were injured. Yet, the shelling here on the outskirts of rebel controlled Donetsk has made it more difficult to treat and rescue injured people suggested a soldier. “Sadly, they hit directly a Ukrainian medical battalion car,” he said while watching the burning building under cover of darkness.

“The fire and the flames spread to our car given to us by volunteers to help the guys. Now I have no idea how we will move around.”

Fighting is also reported at Shyrokyne, along the road to Maripol, which controls land access between Russia and Russian-occupied Crimea.

12 ACTORS, JOURNALISTS AND OTHER LIBERALS WHO MOCKED DONALD TRUMP FOR HANDING OUT PLAY-DOH IN BATON ROUGE: “Snopes fact-checked the visit and found that the 18-wheeler full of supplies donated by Trump was filled with other items such as ‘diapers, baby formula, various toys, cleaning supplies and socks,” Twitchy notes.

SURGE: GOP winning registration race in key states.

Trump’s poll numbers remain dire, but he can point to at least one ray of hope for a turnaround: Republicans have continued gaining ground in recent months in voter registration in Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Iowa, while the late surge in Democratic registrations relative to Republican registrations that occurred in battleground states the final months of the 2012 election had not materialized in numbers released in early August.

“The atmospherics of voter registration trends in those states do not point to a strong Democratic year, so that’s one negative the Trump campaign does not have to deal with at this point,” said Louisiana pollster John Couvillon, who added that spikes in registration can add a point or two to a candidate’s vote share in a close race. “The voter registration data I’m seeing does not support the idea of a surge in Democratic voter enthusiasm.”

Hillary Clinton didn’t generate much enthusiasm outside of her core supporters in 2008, and that was before her self-inflicted email wounds.
