CULTURE OF CORRUPTION: Another adviser to NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigns amid bid-fixing scandal. “How many more of these dominoes need to fall before the highest level of Democrat controlled New York State government is definitively wrapped up in the ongoing corruption investigations? This saga has been dragging out since last year, with US Attorney Preet Bharara saying this summer that it definitely looked like there is corruption in the executive branch. For his part, Governor Andrew Cuomo was unusually frank when he responded by saying that it’s unrealistic to expect that there wouldn’t be any corruption in an organization this size. His words seem to have been proven true yet again this week as another top adviser to the Governor was forced to resign amid growing stories of corruption involving billions of dollars in taxpayer funds. . . . Governor Cuomo is the son of another New York Governor (Mario) and brother of CNN anchor Chris Cuomo. (That’s a convenient relationship if I’ve ever seen one.) The Cuomo dynasty is legendary in Empire State politics and not always for their positive contributions. Cuomo was the State Attorney General before moving into the Governor’s mansion and it’s long been known that he had visions of running for President. It’s difficult to imagine that now with one scandal after another embroiling his office. At this rate he’ll be lucky to avoid going on trial before he next runs for reelection in 2018. But let’s remember that this is New York and the Democratic Party pretty much owns the capitol lock, stock and two smoking barrels. The sad thing is that he’ll probably win if he’s not in jail.”

REMEMBER, THE OBAMA WHITE HOUSE, THE PRESS, AND EVEN A LOT OF REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS WERE READY TO MAKE NATIONAL POLICY BASED ON THIS HOAX: ABC to air ’20/20′ feature on Rolling Stone rape hoax.
This Friday, ABC News will tackle the Rolling Stone gang-rape hoax, a story that captivated a nation through its initial publication and eventual debunking.
The original article, published in November 2014, claimed that a young woman identified as “Jackie” had been gang-raped as part of a fraternity initiation when she was a freshman at the University of Virginia. Jackie and Rolling Stone author Sabrina Rubin Erdely claimed U.Va. dismissed the young woman’s claims and tried to stop her from going to the police.
But in the weeks after the article posted, thanks to skepticism from some pundits and reporters, and the intrepid reporting of the Washington Post’s T. Rees Shapiro, the story fell apart. No party occurred at the fraternity the night of the alleged gang rape. Even worse, the man whom Jackie claimed brought her to the party after the two had a date didn’t even exist.
Rolling Stone eventually retracted the article, and the Columbia Journalism Review issued a report on the magazine’s numerous missteps.
After the article was retracted, the U.Va. dean who was shown as being dismissive of Jackie’s claims, Nicole Eramo, sued the magazine. The trial for her lawsuit is set to begin next week.
I hope the trial has an ending like in Paul Newman’s The Verdict, where the jury comes back and asks if it can award more in damages than the plaintiff asked for . . . .
THERE’S AN “ABANDONING WHITE FAT PRIVILEGE” JOKE IN HERE SOMEWHERE: How Exercise May Turn White Fat Into Brown. “Exercise may aid in weight control and help to fend off diabetes by improving the ability of fat cells to burn calories, a new study reports. It may do this in part by boosting levels of a hormone called irisin, which is produced during exercise and which may help to turn ordinary white fat into much more metabolically active brown fat, the findings suggest. . . . The results strongly indicate that irisin nudges human white fat to become brown and also suppresses the formation of new white fat, says Li-Jun Yang, a professor of hematopathology at the University of Florida and senior author of the study (which was funded by the scientists themselves). It also seems to promote the formation of bone.”
It’s an in-vitro study, though, so there’s a lot more work to be done.

THIS IS, IN FACT, ONE OF THE LITTLE-NOTICED SUCCESSES OF THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION, THOUGH I’VE WRITTEN ABOUT IT ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS: How Obama brought capitalism to outer space.
Obama’s true legacy may be something altogether different: the standing up of a commercial space industry that has ended the government’s monopoly on space.
When the space shuttle was retired in 2011, NASA looked to the commercial sector to fly its astronauts and cargo to the International Space Station, fertilizing the industry with billions of dollars in contracts. And in the past few years, the industry has begun to blossom, reinvigorating interest in space with dramatic landings of rockets on ships with other, unprecedented feats. . . .
Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic and Jeffrey P. Bezos’s Blue Origin promise suborbital tourist flights within a couple of years. (Bezos owns The Washington Post.) SpaceX and Boeing are working toward flying astronauts to the space station. Bigelow Aerospace is building inflatable habitats that could ultimately succeed the station. In fact, one of the habitats is currently attached to the station.
“It will become one of the great ironies in the history of exploration into space that someone many politicians called a socialist was a champion for the possibilities of capitalism in space,” said James Muncy, a space policy analyst at PoliSpace, a consulting firm.
You can accomplish a lot by not interfering.
