NEWS YOU CAN USE: Not Everyone Can Work For CostCo.
This is what economists call an efficiency wage. Paying workers more than the going market rate for their skill level can bring a lot of benefits to your company. You get lower turnover and, arguably, better on-the-job performance. This springs from four sources:
Paying workers more than other workers in their skill class makes them feel warmly toward you. Humans are hard-wired for reciprocity: When someone gives us something, we feel obligated to give them something in return. So if you treat your employees extra-well, they feel obligated to treat you extra-well.
Workers know that if they lose this job, they are likely to end up with a job that pays less. They are thus highly motivated to keep this job.
Employers get to be choosier about who they hire.
The wage attracts people with better skills.
As you can see, this concept is very exciting. But that excitement can get out of control; it frequently leads hot-blooded young progressives to conclude that if we just paid everyone more, all the companies would be more profitable! This is folk wisdom akin to believing that everyone should buy a lottery ticket because your cousin won $1 million that day.
Here’s what they are missing: Efficiency wages only work because the workers are getting more than they could make elsewhere. If everyone was paying the same wages, all the benefits to the employer would disappear.
Personally, I won’t be satisfied until everyone is making more than the median income.

WELL, THOSE WOULD PROBABLY BE RACIST OR SOMETHING: White House: No Ebola travel restrictions.
The White House said Wednesday it will not impose travel restrictions or introduce new airport screenings to prevent additional cases of Ebola from entering the United States.
Spokesman Josh Earnest said that current anti-Ebola measures, which include screenings in West African airports and observation of passengers in the United States, will be sufficient to prevent the “wide spread” of the virus.
The chances of a U.S. epidemic are “incredibly low,” he said.
“The reason for that is that it is not possible to transmit Ebola through the air. … The only way that an individual can contract Ebola is by coming into contact with the bodily fluids of someone who is exhibiting symptoms.”
The comments were made after federal health officials confirmed that a man with Ebola traveled to the United States from Liberia on Sept. 20. He is now being treated in isolation in a Dallas hospital as public health workers trace his contacts.
Earnest said President Obama has “strong confidence” in the man’s medical care and the measures currently in place to prevent Ebola’s spread.
Obama had “strong confidence” in then-Secret Service director Julia Pierson just the other day. How did that work out?
THE FBI, CIA, DWI USA: HHS shock: 1 in 12 Americans use illegal drugs.
America is doped up — and drunk.
According to a shocking new report from the Health and Human Services Department, there were 24.6 million people aged 12 or older who used illicit drugs during just one month last year.
“That’s enough people to fill every major league baseball stadium in the U.S. 19 times,” said the report. There are 30 MLB stadiums.
Even worse: Of the 24.6 million dopers, 2.2 million were adolescents aged 12 to 17.
And it doesn’t end there. The report added that in 2013, 60.1 million individuals aged 12 or older had a binge drinking episode, including 1.6 million adolescents.
The people in Washington seem to be outperforming the average, to judge by results.

BIGGEST CASUALTY OF JULIA PIERSON’S RESIGNATION FROM THE SECRET SERVICE? Hillary — or, rather, Hillary’s narrative.
Remember, after the last wave of Secret Service scandals — involving drinking and prostitution — Pierson was chosen to head the Secret Service because, basically, she was a woman. There were a lot of men making men-type screwups, and a nice, frumpy woman would bring them into line and fix things.
Well, that’s basically the narrative Hillary’s people have been preparing for 2016. Oops.
Related: “It’s as if they thought having a female director would fix — image-fix — their women-related problems. There’s more to the Secret Service than just making it seem as if someone is stopping them from whoring. Did she even succeed at that? Or were we just supposed to feel better about it?”
Plus, from the comments:
1. The bad old SS was a male oriented, competent, hard drinking male club (think Clint Eastwood in “Line of Fire”) that covered up the parties and off duty issues
2. The bad new SS is a PC oriented incompetent club that covers up on duty incompetence
The SS at the CDC violated a number of rules and she directly ordered a cover-up.
I can guess which one a Hillary Administration would look like.
TEACH WOMEN NOT TO RAPE! (CONT’D): Police: Gymnastics coach solicits teen.
Cheatham County authorities have charged a gymnastics coach for having an inappropriate relationship with a Harpeth High School student.
Rebecca Lynn Campbell, 20, of Lyles, was charged with solicitation of a minor.
Campbell worked for Spirit Gymnastics in Bon Aqua. The company helps train the Harpeth cheerleaders.
She is accused of sending sexual text messages to a 17-year-old boy, said Lt. Shannon Heflin of the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities also said Campbell allegedly threw a party at her home and served teens alcohol, even though she is under the legal drinking age.
Okay, this is probably stretching even the feminist definition of “rape” a bit far. Though if the genders were reversed, few people would be doing much parsing.
TEACH WOMEN NOT TO RAPE! (CONT’D): Police: Destrehan teachers had a threesome with a student.

TEACH WOMEN NOT TO RAPE! (CONT’D): A followup from the comments to my earlier post today: 2nd Destrehan High School teacher accused of sexual misconduct with student arrested. “A second Destrehan High School teacher has been in arrested in connection with allegations of sexual misconduct with a student. Rachel Respess, 24, of Kenner turned herself over to authorities Wednesday around 10:30 a.m., according to her attorney, Jeffrey Smith. Authorities say she and another teacher had a sexual encounter with a 16-year-old student. Respess was booked on one count of carnal knowledge of a juvenile, one count of indecent behavior, and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, Smith said.”
Remember, there are so few men in teaching because society is afraid they might be predators.
