JANE HARMAN: A Republican for Attorney General?

At this point in his presidency, Barack Obama has an opportunity to build consensus. With Eric Holder’s resignation, he should consider taking this opportunity to mend fences and revive a Cabinet once billed as a “team of rivals.” So how about a Republican for attorney general? I have a candidate in mind: former Solicitor General Ted Olson, who will probably curse me for making the suggestion.

Well, now that a former Democratic Congresswoman has taken up my call, I guess it’s got momentum!

Ted Olson is great, and she’s got some other suggestions. I’d love to see Randy Barnett. But no Patrick Fitzgerald. Too many shady Chicago connections. And a record that has been less than brilliant.

UPDATE: Nobody tell the folks at Salon about this.

WELL, THIS IS COMFORTING: NBC News Freelancer in Africa Diagnosed with Ebola. “An American freelance cameraman working for NBC News in Liberia has tested positive for Ebola and will be flown back to the United States for treatment. The infected freelancer was hired Tuesday to be a second cameraman for NBC News Chief Medical Editor and Correspondent Dr. Nancy Snyderman. Snyderman is with three other NBC News employees on assignment in Monrovia, reporting on the Ebola outbreak.”

Plus: “The rest of the crew, including Dr. Nancy, are being closely monitored and show no symptoms or warning signs. However, in an abundance of caution, we will fly them back on a private charter flight and then they will place themselves under quarantine in the United States for 21 days – which is at the most conservative end of the spectrum of medical guidance.”

Related: CDC “way over their head on this.” Takeaway: It sounds like NBC News and Samaritan’s Purse are much more cautious and responsible than the CDC.

And while I’d like to know more about how this freelancer may have caught it, he’s a westerner, presumably aware of the dangers and how to avoid infection, not treating people with Ebola, and he still got infected. That could happen to anybody, of course, but it makes me wonder if this strain of Ebola is easier to catch than we think.

FRANK J. FLEMING: Now Is Not the Time to Turn the Country Around. “Maybe just slowing down the damage a bit until 2016, when some actual change is possible, is the best we can hope for.”

COMPETENCE: Elaborate video shows entire security breach at White House, source says.

A man who jumped the White House fence allegedly knocked over a female officer at the mansion’s double doors before he dashed into the ornate East Room.

An inquiry continues into how Omar Gonzalez, 42, made it into the White House. Investigators are looking through an elaborate closed-circuit video system showing the entire incident, a Secret Service source told CNN.

Authorities said the Iraq war veteran had a knife in his pocket when he ran into the White House, where he was later subdued after a wild chase.

The officer he met at the doorway got up, chased him and tackled him just outside the East Room, a source said.

However, the fact that it was a female officer had nothing to do with the breach, according to the source.

“Gender was not a factor, she got one door secured but was pushed over while trying to get the second door shut,” the source said.

I’m sure it wouldn’t have been different if she had been a large, strong man.

FINDING BERGDAHL.

UM, CALL ME CRAZY, BUT cleaning up Ebola vomit with a pressure washer seems like a lousy idea, with droplets blown into air and such. Note the absence of protective gear. Note woman in sandals standing next to runoff. Maybe they’d hosed everything down with bleach first. Somebody please tell me this isn’t as bad as it looks. . . .

CONTACT TRACING: List of those connected to Dallas Ebola patient grows. “More than 80 people have had at least indirect contact with an Ebola patient in Dallas, Texas health officials say. On Wednesday, officials said 12 to 18 people were potentially exposed to the patient, identified as Thomas Eric Duncan. According to Dallas County Health and Human Services, officials have gathered the names of additional individuals who have been in contact with those 12 to 18.”

UPDATE: Well, “up to 100” is “more than 80” I guess: Health Officials Say Up To 100 People May Have Been Exposed To Texas Ebola Patient.

UPDATE: Liberia to prosecute Texas Ebola patient. “As health officials scramble to determine the number of people who may have had contact with Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian man currently being treated for Ebola in Dallas, Texas, Liberian officials have taken the aggressive step of announcing that they plan to prosecute Duncan. The government alleges that Duncan lied about having come into contact with someone affected by Ebola during an airport screening.” If so, he should be prosecuted.

HOW PREPPERS ARE STOCKING UP FOR EBOLA. When this stuff first started breaking out in West Africa, my brother advised our relatives in Lagos to stock up 3 months worth of food and water. Other stuff is nice, but being prepared to stay home for an extended period is probably the best precaution you can take.

Meanwhile, that how to prepare for Ebola book seems to be doing quite well on Amazon.
