#OCCUPYFAIL: OCCUPIER DEVOLUTION. “If you have ever wondered what would happen in a society consisting entirely of liberals, the Occupier movement is providing the answer: devolution. It is almost impossible to keep up with the downward spiral, but here are some of the highlights of the last 24 hours.”

CONGRATULATIONS TO VIRGINIA POSTREL, who won a Bastiat Prize. “Two journalists, from the Economist and Bloomberg News, were jointly awarded the Bastiat Prize for Journalism this week, which offered increased prize money of $50,000. The global prize, which is organised by the International Policy Network (IPN), went to Tom Easton of the Economist and Virginia Postrel of Bloomberg News, whose winning articles were also published by the Wall Street Journal.”

WE REMAIN RATHER SHORT ON SPECIFICS: Cain accuser tables proposed joint press conference with other accusers. “The attorney for Karen Kraushaar, one of the women who received a settlement from the National Restaurant Association after accusing Herman Cain of sexual harassment, said Thursday that a plan for a joint press conference to include all four Cain accusers had been tabled. Joel Bennett, Kraushaar’s attorney, had said Wednesday that she would be willing to hold a press conference even if she and Sharon Bialek, Cain’s other public accuser, were unable to convince the two other women to come forward. . . . Bennett told The New York Times that Kraushaar had been unable to contact the other two accusers, despite ‘diligent efforts,’ and definitively would not be participating in a press conference with only Bialek.”

HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE: Consultant’s contract raises questions at Tarrant County College. “On Aug. 29, Tarrant County College’s $192 million Center for Health Care Professions opened its doors to 700 students in downtown Fort Worth. Officially known as the Trinity River East Campus, it cost taxpayers a staggering $1,476 per square foot to build — more than three times what experienced real estate executives say such a facility should have cost.”

ROMENESKO IS NO LONGER ROMENESKO: Romenesko Leaves Poynter After Conflict Over Quotes. “Jim Romenesko, the blogger who developed a large and loyal following by chronicling and summarizing news in the media world, quit his post on Thursday evening after a bizarre spat with the institute that hosts his writing. . . . Many journalists saw the aggregating Mr. Romenesko did in his early-morning posts as the best real estate in American journalism to promote their work. They would send him links to their stories and encourage him to summarize them. So the idea that anyone could think he was somehow trying to take credit for work that wasn’t his rang false.”

It does seem to be bizarre. Quotation marks are nice, but so long as people understand a quotation is a quotation, only a priggish idiot would insist on quotation marks anyway.

FREE SPEECH: Not Safe To Display An American Flag In An American High School. “When we’re at the point that students can’t safely display the American flag in an American school, because of a fear that other students will attack them for it — on May 5 or on any other day — and the school feels unable to prevent such attacks (by punishing the threateners and the attackers, and by teaching students tolerance for other students’ speech), something is badly wrong. Here’s an excerpt from the court opinion describing the facts that led the court to uphold the restriction.”

Plus, from the comments: “If a student were threatened for wearing a LBGT shirt, the school would not ask the student to remove the shirt. The school would remove those making the threats.”

WALTER RUSSELL MEAD: A Wealth War Against The Young? “Skyrocketing student loans play some role in the growing wealth gap; so too does the growing trend to keep older workers on the old, high wage scales while putting new and lower wage and benefit levels into effect for new hires. Americans of all ages need to realize, though, that nobody ever wins a war against the young.”

But note the pushback and discussion in the comments.
