VIDEO: They’re Still Not Listening To Rick Santelli. “Want to see a microcosm of everything that’s been wrong with American economic policy over the last couple of years? Watch this exchange between Ezra Klein and Rick Santelli from earlier today on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. Santelli, whose February 2009 on-air rant over fiscal and economic mismanagement inspired the start of the Tea Party, gets exasperated with Klein after the Washington Post columnist talks about money moving around ‘unfairly.’ . . . We don’t need social engineers tinkering with the economic system to achieve their notion of “fairness” — we need actual economic growth, which the social engineers have proven completely incompetent at delivering.”

WHEN IT COMES TO EARNINGS, higher education isn’t the whole story: “How much money people make has a lot to do with how educated they are, but sometimes less-educated people earn more.”

CATHY YOUNG: Breivik and the Anti-Zionist Smear: The Norway terrorist was no friend of Israel. “In the aftermath of Anders Breivik’s terrorist rampage in Norway, a ‘blame the Jews’ theme has emerged: assertions that Breivik was driven by fanatical devotion to Israel. Mostly, complaints about the media’s failure to identify Breivik as a Zionist zealot have been confined to fringe blogs on the left and the right—but they have also cropped up in more mainstream venues, such as the blog of prominent pundit Andrew Sullivan.”

Not so mainstream as he used to be. And in Norway, blaming the Jews is something that an awful lot of people agree on, nowadays.

OOPS! DEBRA SAUNDERS:

Democratic Senators and House Whip Steny Hoyer held a press conference to blame Republicans for the FAA shutdown. Thursday, after the press conference, they announced a deal. This morning, the Senate voted to a pass bill it could have passed in order to avoid the 13-day FAA shutdown.

The press condference was instructive. You can see the Dems expected the media to parrot their recalcitrant-Republican talking point, while ignoring their choice to not pass a temporary extension because it included $16.5 million in cuts to a pork-rich rural airport program.

Instead they were shocked and angered when ABC’s Jonathan Karl asked some pointed questions. You’ve got to watch this video.

GETTING “ROOT ACCESS” ON THE HUMAN BODY: Hacking An Insulin Pump. “A security researcher at Black Hat yesterday demonstrated how a hacker could remotely turn off a diabetic person’s insulin pump without their knowledge. His findings came after months of research delving into the security of the portable medical devices that monitor diabetics’ blood sugar levels and those that deliver the body-chemistry-balancing insulin necessary to keep those levels in check throughout the day.”

MEGAN MCARDLE: How To Think About Refinancing:

Everyone tells me that this blog has become perhaps a mite gloomy over the past few days . . . weeks . . . months. So let’s look at one of the rare bright spots in this financial Twilight of the Gods: mortgage rates. They’re really low. So low that my husband and I, who bought our house last October, have been seriously considering refinancing. I thought it might be worthwhile looking at how we made the decision.

Yeah, we refinanced last year and now I’m watching the rates again.

CALIFORNIA: Much of California’s funds come from Washington, D.C. Now, that’s shaky ground. “The real state budget includes an additional $79.2 billion in federal largesse, representing 38% of total state spending. This brings the grand total to $208.7 billion. So the state of California is getting a nearly $209-billion spending program while putting up less than $130 billion itself. . . . All programs are in jeopardy. It’s a good bet much of their federal funding will be trimmed or terminated in the future.”
