HUFFPO: Federal Auditor Says Obama’s Anti-Foreclosure Effort Risks ‘Generating Public Anger And Mistrust’.

The Obama administration’s signature anti-foreclosure effort, unveiled in 2009 with the promise of helping three to four million homeowners modify their mortgages, is such a failure that it now risks “generating public anger and mistrust,” according to a federal audit released Monday.

Far from helping at-risk homeowners, the Home Affordable Modification Program has actually made some homeowners worse off, according to the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program — also known as the Wall Street bailout. The Treasury Department set aside $50 billion from TARP, plus another $25 billion from taxpayer-owned Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, to give mortgage servicers thousand-dollar incentives to reduce monthly mortgage payments by modifying eligible homeowners’ loans. But more people have been bounced from the program than have been helped by it.

Well, this is less of a surprise to some of us than to others.

CLAIM: MoveOn Supporter Beaten By Rand Paul Supporters. So far — see, e.g., Ken Gladney — the violence has come from the left, but it’s possible that this is true and not a setup. Whoever did it should be prosecuted, preferably with greater severity than Gladney’s assailants got.

READER ALLEN S. THORPE EMAILS:

Does the Juan Williams – NPR story have legs?

It’s been a week and I’m still seeing commentary on it. I don’t think that Bill O’Reilly is going to forget it anytime soon. Tonight Fox reported on reactions from the heads of member stations around the country to Vivian Schiller’s handling of it.

And it has given new life to the demand to cut off funding for government supported news. I still like NPR’s way of giving depth to stories that you don’t hear on the nightly news, but I just got sick of their business model of pretending that they’re too pure to run commercials and aiming their pledge drives at “thinking people,” i.e. elites and elite wannabes. They keep saying that their reports wouldn’t be feasible with a commercial operation, but Special Report on Fox and long news programs on the other cable news networks, can trace their existence back to The News Hour, and before that, All Things Considered and Morning Edition. With CNN, MSNBC and FOX, who really needs NPR?

Well, I think that NPR does a great job in many ways. It’s just too bad that they see themselves — and the Juan Williams business makes that clear — as Stuff White People Like Radio. That limits their value.

PHILADELPHIA STORY:

Rep. Robert Brady (D-PA), Chairman of the Philadelphia Democratic Party, was on MSNBC with Andrea Mitchell this morning. He was explaining how the Philadelphia machine was working to ensure Joe Sestak’s victory in the closely watched Senate race in Pennsylvania. Ms Mitchell asked, “What is the secret here to turn out? In the old days, the old machine days, what we called ‘walking around money,’ handing out money to get people to vote. Is it still the case? What do you do, what is the magic in Philadelphia?”

Rep. Brady (who looks and sounds like he came right out of central casting for the part of shady, party boss) shockingly acknowledged that the cash-on-the-streets strategy is not an antiquity but still part of the Democratic Machine’s playbook in 2010: “We still have the street money and we’re very knowledgeable,” he said.

Not so much change here.

VANGUARD MUTUAL FUND ENDORSES OBAMA DEMOCRATS. “Anyway, it’ll be interesting to see whether the crowd on the left that is so furious about the supposedly anonymous corporate money pouring in to the campaign on the side of Republicans will utter a peep of protest at Vanguard’s campaign intervention on the side of Democrats and President Obama.”

JON STEWART RALLIES THE TROOPS: “Stewart is, of course, attempting to help the Democrats. But don’t Democrats worry about losing control of the imagery? I assume the crowd Stewart pulls in will not give off finely tuned niceness vibes and, in all likelihood, they will project a much more left-wing image than Democrats would like to be identified with.”

CHANGE: Treasury Draws Negative Yield for First Time During TIPS Sale. “The Treasury sold $10 billion of five-year Treasury Inflation Protected Securities at a negative yield for the first time at a U.S. debt auction as investors bet the Federal Reserve will be successful in sparking inflation. . . . The dollar dropped to a 15-year low versus the yen after a pledge by the Group of 20 nations Oct. 23 to avoid “competitive devaluation” failed to dispel speculation the Fed will debase the greenback by announcing more bond purchases in a strategy called quantitative easing.” Oh, goody.

UH OH: EXCLUSIVE: Aide to Harry Reid Lied to Feds, Submitted False Documents About Sham Marriage. Well, this should spice things up between now and the election. “An aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid repeatedly lied to federal immigration and FBI agents and submitted false federal documents to the Department of Homeland Security to cover up her illegal seven-year marriage to a Lebanese national who was the subject of an Oklahoma City Joint Terror Task Force investigation, FoxNews.com has learned. . . . According to interviews and court records obtained by FoxNews.com, Tejada knowingly filed false documents with the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services; lied in in-person interviews with ICE and FBI agents; and submitted fraudulent visa application affidavits and marriage license documents — all in attempt to use her status as an American citizen to get Tarhini permanent residency.”

UPDATE: Reader C.J. Burch writes: “Uhm, haven’t normal American citizens been prosecuted for much less?” Why, yes, yes they have. But she’s an aide to Harry Reid. Laws, like taxes, are for the little people.

ANOTHER UPDATE: A reader emails: “A democrat’s Latina aide lying about a sham marriage between her and a suspected Muslim terrorist? One thing is for sure; NPR analysts should not touch this story with a ten foot pole.” Heh. Indeed.
