MARY ROBINSON NOT FULLY VETTED. “Who recommended her? Chas Freeman?” The country’s in the very best of hands.

MICHAEL YON POSTS more photos and reports from Afghanistan, and emails: “After this will go with U.S. Marines, but there are so few helicopters that there is no telling when that will be. Kind of stuck out here. That’s fine because it’s great to cover the British, too.” Remember, he’s supported by reader donations, so if you like his work, please hit the tipjar.

CONCERNS ABOUT GREED AND CARBON FOOTPRINTS ARE FOR THE LITTLE PEOPLE: House Orders Three Jets.

“Last year, lawmakers excoriated the CEOs of the Big Three automakers for traveling to Washington, D.C., by private jet to attend a hearing about a possible bailout of their companies,” Roll Call reports.

“But apparently Congress is not philosophically averse to private air travel: At the end of July, the House approved nearly $200 million for the Air Force to buy three elite Gulfstream jets for ferrying top government officials and Members of Congress.”

The Air Force had asked for one jet as part of an upgrade program, but the House Appropriations Committee added two more at its own discretion.

Seems like someone could make this a campaign issue if they cared to . . . .

UPDATE: Reader Ed Stephens writes: “Tea Partiers should ask reps for a commitment to only fly commercial.” It would make good video.

JOHN BOLTON says Clinton’s trip to North Korea is unwise.

“CASH FOR CLUNKERS” PROTESTERS forced out at Carnahan speech. “The White House said today that they’re not worried about the protesters. …They’re so not worried that they’re locking them outside.”

Plus this: “Carnahan snuck out the back door.”

THE END OF VINTAGE KIDS’ BOOKS? Just as well. Many of those older books might put unacceptable notions in the tykes’ heads. Better that they should get wholesome modern ideas.

ZOGBY POLL: “An overwhelming majority of Americans (83 percent) support concealed-carry laws, while only 11 percent oppose them. A majority of Independent voters (86 percent), Democrats (80 percent), young voters age 18-29 (83 percent), Hispanic voters (80 percent), and those who voted for President Obama (80 percent) support the right to carry a firearm.”

UPDATE: Eugene Volokh has questions about the poll.
