DENVER: Now the word is that there was “no credible threat” to Obama.

CHARGES OF sexism at the BBC.
A SURVEILLANCE KIT IN A BOX: “According to a document obtained by New Scientist, the system integrates tasks typically done by separate surveillance teams or machines, pooling data from sources such as telephone calls, email and internet activity, bank transactions and insurance records. It then sorts through this mountain of information using software that Siemens dubs ‘intelligence modules’. This software is trained on a large number of sample documents to pick out items such as names, phone numbers and places from generic text. This means it can spot names or numbers that crop up alongside anyone already of interest to the authorities, and then catalogue any documents that contain such associates.”

BRENDAN LOY: It’s almost a hurricane now, and “Gustav could be the season’s first real ‘blockbuster’ storm.”
JIM LINDGREN: “Many pundits on the right are underestimating the ease with which Barack Obama has it within his power to get a 3-8% bump in support in the polls.”
A DIFFERENT KIND OF TALKING-HEAD SHOW FROM DENVER. Obama as “the CGI candidate?”
ACE SAYS I’M WRONG TO DEFEND JOE BIDEN on the plagiarism rap, and cites this David Greenberg piece from Slate. “But the even greater sin was to borrow biographical facts from Kinnock that, although true about Kinnock, didn’t apply to Biden. Unlike Kinnock, Biden wasn’t the first person in his family history to attend college, as he asserted; nor were his ancestors coal miners, as he claimed when he used Kinnock’s words.”
Well, that’s just plain lying. Perhaps someone will ask him about this.
CRAIG CRAWFORD: “The Democratic convention now teeters on the brink of a media disaster thanks to real news that threatens to distract reporters from the scripted show. And wouldn’t you know, it’s all about the Clintons. . . Whatever the cause, the appearance of Clinton getting dissed by Obama opened Pandora’s Box for her enthusiasts.”

OBAMA RESPONDS ON BILL AYERS, but raises some questions in the process.
YOU KNOW, OBAMA’S SUPPORTERS REALLY ARE HIS BIGGEST WEAKNESS:
DENVER — The chief of Illinois’ National Organization for Women chapter today called on Barack Obama’s “political godfather†to resign immediately from the Illinois state Senate for calling an African-American Hillary Clinton delegate an “Uncle Tom.â€
“That was a pretty horrible comment,†said Illinois NOW president Bonnie Grabenhofer, also a Clinton delegate, who issued the demand for Senate President Emil Jones’ resignation.
But entertaining. Read the whole thing. This may explain those Hillary supporters wearing McCain buttons in Denver.
HMM: “Federal authorities have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday afternoon amid reports that a fortunate traffic stop by Aurora Police may have disrupted an assassination attempt against Barack Obama. . . . Federal authorities are refusing to comment about why they believe the case is possibly tied to an assassination plot, but scheduled a news conference for 4 p.m. Tuesday. ” Glad they caught ’em if so, but bear in mind that early reports often contain substantial errors.
UPDATE: Perhaps this explains the otherwise laughable panic at Nancy Pelosi’s hotel earlier.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Dan Riehl has followups. But “a rifle sighted at 750 yards?” Other than something like a Barrett, what would that be?
But, “there are a lot of nutballs here.” More at
OBAMA SCORES MCCAIN ON ECONOMICS, where McCain is, as I’ve noted in the past, vulnerable.
NOW IT’S TROPICAL STORM GUSTAV: Brendan Loy is keeping track, and comments: “Keep in mind, this thing was still an ‘Invest’ — not even a T.D. — less than four hours ago. Now it’s just 14 mph away from hurricane strength.” Stay tuned.

A LOOK AT THE 2008 BMW M3: “The 335i could have been a supercar a decade ago, but the new M3 puts it in the shade. We’ve made this point before, but it’s an amazing commentary on the automotive world in which we live that a BMW M3 could pack a V-8 that generates upwards of 400 horsepower and still be considered a little underpowered. I have a hunch that in a decade when we’re all driving gas misers, we’ll think back to this era with reverence and awe.”
VIA HOT AIR: video from the DNC protests.

OKAY, THIS PICTURE OF THE CANDIDATES AND THEIR WIVES, via Drudge, is perhaps a bit more reminiscent of Swingtown than seems really wise for a Presidential campaign. Full-sized, like this, though, it doesn’t look quite as racy as Drudge’s smaller version, which makes it look as if Obama and Jill Biden are in a full-fledged liplock.
UPDATE: Everybody does seem friendly.
A HARVARD STUDY OF THE BANKRUPTCY REFORM BILL THAT JOE BIDEN CHAMPIONED: “The data suggests that although bankruptcies and credit card company losses decreased, and credit card companies achieved record profits, the cost to consumers of credit card debt actually increased. In other words the 2005 bankruptcy reforms profited credit card companies at consumers’ expense.” I don’t think McCain was any better on the issue, but he’s not running on a class-warfare platform, either.
ED MORRISSEY: Does Biden lose the youth vote with his support of the RIAA?
And don’t forget the RAVE Act, either.
TREATING CANCER WITH NANOTECHNOLOGY: “In a study with breast cancer in mice, a nanotech cancer therapy suppresses tumor growth with minimal side effects. Taking advantage of the fact that the blood vessels in tumor tissue are leakier than in normal tissue, carbon nanotubes of the right size and with the proper chemical coating deliver more tumor-killing drug to tumors, while sparing normal tissue. In future experiments, the researchers may add molecules that specifically target tumor cells to achieve even greater specificity.”
A FUEL-CELL POWERED racing go-kart.
HOPE, CHANGE, AND A NEW KIND OF POLITICS (CONT’D): Biden’s son consulted for credit company Biden defended in Senate. They are the change we’ve been waiting for? “Remember when Barack Obama wanted to change the manner business got conducted in Washington? If that seems a long time ago, it retreated further in the distance when Team Obama admitted yesterday that running mate Joe Biden had a son consulting MBNA, a credit company who had a lot to lose if a bankruptcy bill Obama opposed became law. Biden actively supported the bill, which made their investment in consultants look wise indeed.”
TalkLeft: “I am the type of Democrat that will vote straight party ticket, from top to bottom, in a general election. They have my vote and usually my support. But I am not all Democratic voters. No politician is entitled to anyone’s support or vote. But what you see projected from the Obama camp and Democrats of late is the notion that Barack Obama is entitled to the support of all Democratic voters.”
It’s that oozing sense of entitlement that some shrewd observers noticed months ago.
ONE LAST SUMMER ROAD TRIP? Alas, it’s too late for me — school’s already well underway.
