I’ve been reading Charles Murray & Catherine Cox’s excellent Apollo history and there’s a relevant passage there, about perspectives. For those entering Apollo from the missiles and systems-engineering areas, it seemed like there always had to be a way to do things so that nobody got hurt, if you were smart and careful enough. The people whose background was in flight test knew better: “You lose crew. Pilots die flying experimental aircraft.”
