YA THINK? Byron York: Scott Walker is headed for trouble with the GOP establishment. They’re worried he might win, and with GOP majorities in Congress actually try to do something.
JEZEBEL ISN’T EXACTLY RELIABLE: Boy, Blowing Up A DNC Media Hit Job On Scott Walker In Realtime Sure Is Fun! The Latest Attempt To Launch A New Walker Smear Crashes & Burns On The Launch Pad. “As it so happens, this Jezebel writer, Natasha Vargas-Cooper, either didn’t do any research at all on this piece or she deliberately left out the whole story.”
IN USA TODAY, Scott Walker writes on not taking the media’s bait.
THE SKULLS OF HIS ENEMIES: Scott Walker Is Set to Deliver New Blow to Labor in Wisconsin. That’s the New York Times headline, and while it’s accurate enough — the unions hate this, and with reason — it’s also a major advance for workers’ rights.
UPDATE: “One thing those of us who are pro-union need to ask ourselves is why so few Americans belong to unions presently. It is facile, lazy, and simply wrong to blame the anti-union efforts of Reagan, Walker, the Kochs, Whole Foods, Walmart and the like. If you say it is the anti-union policies of the past thirty five years, then you are simply ignoring the fact that when American unions formed in the 19th century and struggled to build in the first third of the 20th century, the anti-union sentiment of the corporations and most politicians was much stronger than today, and the lot of the average worker was harder. Lazy people blame others. If those who originally fought to create our unions had such an attitude, unions would never have been established in the first place. Part of the problem is that the Left failed to criticize unions as their leadership often evolved to having more in common with the bosses than with their own members. As the Left moved away from worker issues in the Sixties to Civil Rights, the anti-war movement, feminism, and cultural issues, blue collar workers became alienated from those who were now largely content to support labor by merely singing Woody Guthrie and Weavers songs. The Left largely came to look down their noses at workers because of attitudes regarding culture and the war, only honoring workers when their issues were tied to something else, such as the largely Mexican-American United Farmworkers Union or access to jobs for women.”
ED MORRISSEY: Scott Walker, and the problem with valuing credentials over competence. Our ruling class values credentials over competence because they have a lot more of the former than they do of the latter. . . .
POLITICO: In hindsight, perhaps the headline “Scott Walker Needs An Eraser” wasn’t the best idea. “In a recent column about the Wisconsin governor, a conservative Republican, New York Times columnist Gail Collins wrote that Walker had cut state aid to education, causing teacher layoffs in 2010. But Walker didn’t take office until 2011.”
More here.
YEAH, A BUNCH OF STUDENTS AND FACULTY PROTESTING AGAINST SCOTT WALKER. THIS TIME IT’LL WORK FOR SURE!! Univ. of Wisconsin protesters pledge to shut campus down over budget cuts. “Lane Hall, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, took the microphone and told the restless, angry crowd that democracy cannot work as it currently stands. Lane went on to say there are other systems that America should use, even if history has an extremely negative view of them, prompting rowdy cheers from most in the crowd.”
I advise you not to open that door. You have no idea what awaits on the other side.
SCOTT WALKER HAS THE POWER TO REACH BACKWARD IN TIME AND TO PARALYZE HIS ENEMIES IN THE PRESENT: So, yesterday I noted that this Gail Collins oped in the New York Times accuses Scott Walker of ordering teacher layoffs in 2010, when he didn’t take office as governor until 2011. And yet, as of this morning, the Times hasn’t run any sort of correction.
UPDATE: From the comments: “He’s got a TARDIS and a sonic? I’m in.”
WHY DO DEMOCRATS FEAR SCOTT WALKER? BECAUSE HE HAS THE POWER TO REACH BACKWARD THROUGH TIME! NO, REALLY: New York Times’ Gail Collins Blames Scott Walker For Teacher Layoffs That Occurred The Year Before He Took Office.
THE STATEMENT IS TRUE, BUT THE PREMISE IS FALSE: Frank Luntz on Scott Walker: “Our Most Intelligent Presidents Have Often Been Our Worst Presidents.” Graduating from college, or not, says little about your intelligence. College screens out the subnormal IQs — or, at least, it used to — but one needn’t be particularly intelligent to graduate. For that matter, our Columbia- and Harvard-educated President today, though one of our worst presidents, shows no particular evidence of being especially bright.
FIRST SCOTT WALKER, NOW THIS: “Forced union dues are a critical cog in the corrupt bargain that is crushing taxpayers,” says the Governor of Illinois.
SCOTT WALKER REJECTS YOUR PREMISE:
The conventional wisdom after Republicans lost two presidential elections to Barack Obama was that the GOP needed to concede the premise of certain Democratic talking points. Suddenly immigration reform became urgent enough for a prospective GOP candidate to lead the effort in the Senate. And even more suddenly, talk of inequality has emerged in conservative circles. But what if the conventional wisdom is wrong? What if, instead, Scott Walker is right?
The Wisconsin governor is enjoying a bit of a boomlet right now, as Peter Beinart notes in a sharp piece on Walker’s unapologetic conservatism. And he’s earned it. He won three statewide elections in four years, and did so with national media attention and the concerted lunatic tactics of public unions (death threats, violence, compulsive Hitler comparisons) aimed at him and his supporters. He won comfortably and with a smile on his face. Walker never lost his composure and never stooped to the level of his fanatical liberal opponents.
None of this is news. What’s changed is that Walker has, in the last week, gone national. His speech at the Iowa Freedom Summit earned rave reviews, and was followed with what appears to be the first pro-Walker presidential ad. And everyone seems to have noticed what Walker’s opponents in Wisconsin have learned the hard way, repeatedly: he’s a formidable politician. This should worry his GOP rivals not only because of Walker’s win streak, but also because Walker is doing something many of them aren’t: he’s setting the terms of the debate instead of following the terms the Democrats have set.
An idea so crazy, it just might work!
HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE: Scott Walker urges professors to work harder. “Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, defending proposed budget cuts for higher education, took a swipe at university professors who he said could be ‘teaching more classes and doing more work.'”
I’m disappointed that he’s not focusing more on cutting administration, which represents the largest part of academic bloat in recent years.
THE CASE FOR SCOTT WALKER:
Does Walker sizzle? Not exactly. Is he a particularly charismatic speaker? No, he isn’t. But does he sit upon a throne made of the skulls of his enemies? Yes, yes he does.
Heh.
FOX CALLS THE WISCONSIN GOVERNOR’S RACE FOR SCOTT WALKER.
UPDATE: Perdue wins in Georgia without a runoff. CBS calls Kansas Senate race for Roberts. Dems’ chance of a Senate majority now not even theoretical.
So is it a wave yet?
ANOTHER UPDATE: Heh.
