DECOUPLING, YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG: Apple CEO becomes chairman of China university board. “Tim Cook will work closely with Chinese government officials to promote Tsinghua University’s economics and management school.”

COLORADO: Former state rep accused of sexual assault uses campaign money to ‘reimburse’ self for ‘legal fees.’ “Galindo’s resignation came from scrutiny she faced when two women accused her of sexual assault they said occurred while they worked under her during her campaign for office during the spring, summer and fall of 2018.”

Rumors surrounding the future of former House District 50 Rep. Rochelle Galindo continue to circulate as the 29-year-old awaits trial on allegations she served alcohol to underage campaign workers.

Galindo may have created even more questions with her most recent campaign finance report, filed with the Colorado Secretary of State’s office on Oct. 15, showing she reimbursed a large portion of the cash on hand back to herself for “professional services.”

Galindo reimbursed herself $4,500 in what she labeled as legal fees for a recall effort that was in place when she resigned on Mother’s Day. However, the reimbursements didn’t come until months after she stepped down, and it is not clear who she paid for those services.

Under Colorado campaign finance laws candidates can not use their funds for “personal purposes not reasonably related to the election of the candidate except that a candidate committee may make expenditures to reimburse the candidate for reasonable and necessary child or dependent care expenses the candidate incurs in connection with their campaign during the election cycle.”

Much more at the link, including her celebratory trip to Vegas — also using unspent campaign contributions — following her election to the Greeley City Council in 2015.

Galindo resigned from the assembly in May, and was also the subject of a recall effort.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: Hang On Kids – Joementum Is Back. “The Democrats are now caught in the electability trap that often plagues the party that is trying to win back the White House. It’s the same plague that saddled the GOP with the monumental losers John McCain and Mitt Romney.”

SCENES FROM A FAILING STATE: They’re not avocados, they’re ‘green gold,’ and hyperviolent drug cartels have sights set on them.

Small-scale avocado growers armed with AR-15 rifles take turns manning a vigilante checkpoint to guard against thieves and drug cartel extortionists in this town in the Michoacan state, the heartland of world production of the fruit locals call “green gold.”

The region’s avocado boom, fueled by soaring U.S. consumption, has raised parts of western Mexico out of poverty in just 10 years. But the scent of money has drawn gangs and hyperviolent cartels that have hung bodies from bridges and cowed police forces, and the rising violence is threatening the newfound prosperity. A recent U.S. warning that it could withdraw orchard inspectors sent a shiver through the $2.4 billion-a-year export industry.

Some growers are taking up arms. At the checkpoint in San Juan Parangaricutiro, the vigilantes are calm but attentive. They say their crop is worth fighting for.

I wish all the luck in the world to these farmers, but the cartels have the big battalions.

WILL COLLIER: The Republican SCIF Invasion and the Law. “Bringing your phone into a secure facility is a violation, but not necessarily a major one.”

Today’s Republican excursion into protest theater in the Capitol, wherein a large number of GOP members rushed the Intelligence Committee’s Secure Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) without first putting away their cell phones, has generated an . . . interesting response among left-wing Twitter.

Among the more histrionic responses came from self-described “Multimedia Journalist” David Leavitt, who issued this demanded: “Every @GOP member who invaded the SCIF should be taken into custody by the Capitol Police & questioned by the FBI to determine if they’re serving a foreign intelligence service. They should also be removed from the House until the investigation is completed & votes out of office.”

Well. Having spent the better part of 20 years working in SCIFs every day myself, I have some experience with these matters. Let’s take a moment to unpack this a bit before calling in the marshal of the Supreme Court.

A “heh” to the Classical Reference, and a “read the whole thing” to the rest.

NEVER LET A MANUFACTURED CRISIS GO TO WASTE: Attorney blasts California Gov. Newsom for using homeless crisis to overturn will of voters.

Attorney Jim Breslo said Wednesday that California Gov. Gavin Newsom overturned the will of California voters by using the homeless crisis as an excuse to impose statewide rent control in an attempt to address a housing shortage.

“He’s [Newsom is] trying to use a crisis to do things that he wasn’t otherwise able to do,” Breslo told “Fox & Friends.”

“They couldn’t get statewide rent control approved by the voters.”

Although Newsom previously opposed the initiative, the former lieutenant governor and mayor of San Francisco changed his position and plans to sign a statewide rent-control law.

One more time, the Housing Gnomes’ three-step plan works like this:

1. Make construction more costly, and also cap rents.

2. ???

3. Housing for everyone!

Fortunately, I have a huge supply Unexpectedlys for use as the steps play out.

BLUE ON BLUE: AOC Defies Pelosi, DCCC With Texas Endorsement.

Ocasio-Cortez endorsed progressive Jessica Cisneros in her primary challenge against Rep. Henry Cuellar (D., Tex.), citing Cisneros’s status as a “strong new ally in the fight for Medicare for All.” Cisneros is supported by Justice Democrats, the same progressive group that backed Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) in 2018.

Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement marks another act of defiance toward Democratic leadership. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairwoman Cheri Bustos (D., Ill.) have endorsed Cuellar.

Ocasio-Cortez attacked Cuellar in her endorsement, accusing the incumbent Democrat of fighting for “big corporate donors” and suggesting he is “quite regressive” compared to his constituency. The Cuellar campaign denounced the freshman congresswoman’s endorsement as out-of-state meddling. Ocasio-Cortez, his spokesman said, does not speak for the people of Texas.

She speaks for everyone, everywhere. Just ask her.

WE’RE SAVED! Bed Bath & Beyond Pulls Halloween Decorations Following Racism Complaint. “The whole ball of stupid got rolling in Nyack, New York, where someone from a local law firm picked up a few of the nasty-evil-vile-racist-hater plastic pumpkins for office Halloween decorations. Local Westchester News 12 reported that ‘the jack-o’-lanterns upset some community members,’ and so the law firm of Feerick, Nugent, MacCartney got rid of them. Then, following a vital news investigation into this horrific act of pure …[checks notes] holiday charm… Bed Bath & Beyond decided to stop selling them.”

YES. NEXT QUESTION? Is It Time For America To Begin Decoupling From Communist China?

There is a case to be made that since President Richard Nixon’s historic 1972 visit to China, the United States has become more like China than China has become like us. We may have been sowing the seeds of our own destruction.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is just one of many prominent Western industries as diverse as automobiles, fashion, and lodging that have cowed to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) line, and engaged in self-censorship out of a desire for the almighty dollar. While the NBA is a particularly deserving target of ire, given the fact its social justice warriors have shown themselves to be hypocritical sellouts, one would be hard-pressed to find any entity with substantial profits or funding tied to China willing to permit the voicing of views that might rankle the CCP.

“Stealth War: How China Took Over While America’s Elites Slept,” a new book by U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Robert Spalding (Ret.), confirms this assessment. Spalding served as the chief China strategist for the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as senior U.S. Defense official and defense attaché to China in Beijing, and later in the Trump National Security Council (NSC), where he was the chief architect of the NSS’s framework for national competition.

According to Spalding, even organizations that would seem to have a vested interest in exposing China’s malign behavior remain mum.

I believe it was Lenin who wrote, “Money talks, BS walks.”

LATE-STAGE SOCIALISM: Venezuelans buy gas with cigarettes to battle inflation. “Motorists in socialist Venezuela have long enjoyed the world’s cheapest gasoline, with fuel so heavily subsidized that a full tank these days costs a tiny fraction of a U.S. penny. But the economy is in such shambles that drivers are now paying for fill-ups with a little food, a candy bar or just a cigarette.”

Weird how currencies always seem to end up worthless when the government dictates prices.
