KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: Behold the Incredible Triggering Power of the MAGA Hat! “The Twitter hashtag #KurtSuzuki reveals an array of fragility, mental instability, and fundamental misunderstandings of just what a hat is capable of. If I were a better person I would feel bad for these people.”
KIRA DAVIS: People Are Trying To ‘Cancel’ Comedian Hannibal Buress For Opposing Rent Control… Seriously.
Hannibal Buress is a comedian and actor who has in recent years seen a sharp rise in his popularity (Spiderman:Homecoming; Bojack Horseman; Tag; Broad City). Like most celebrities (I guess we’ll call him that even though he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who welcomes such a label) Buress leans politically left and isn’t shy about expressing it. He’s an admitted member of the Yang Gang and like most people these days keeps up with the progressing presidential campaign on Twitter.
This past week Buress made the mistake of crossing the Bernie Brigade when he responded to Bernie’s tweet about a national rent control plan.
His Twitter feed was immediately inundated with outrage.
It hardly seems possible to be a Twitter pecksniff and guttersnipe at the same time, but they manage.
I LIKE TO THINK PEOPLE WILL STILL BE WATCHING THE 1978 ‘SUPERMAN’ CENTURIES FROM NOW: Microsoft archived ‘Superman’ on its Project Silica glass storage medium. “Movie studios archive thousands of movies in their warehouses. But celluloid, the medium onto which master copies are printed, isn’t the most stable storage format; it’s prone to decay and is highly flammable. Yet, switching to hard drives wouldn’t be helpful, since they’re so prone to failure. Microsoft’s new glass-based storage medium could do the trick. As reported by Variety, Warner Bros. has saved the 1978 version of Superman onto one of Microsoft’s Project Silica glass plates, which will supposedly last for centuries.”
TOUGH LOVE: Trump Threatens to Cut California Wildfire Funds.
In a Sunday morning tweet, Mr. Trump alleged that California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, wasn’t doing enough to stop the fires, accusing him of doing a “terrible job of forest management.”
“Every year, as the fire’s rage & California burns, it is the same thing – and then he comes to the Federal Government for $$$ help. No more. Get your act together Governor,” the president wrote.
Mr. Trump again called on Mr. Newsom to “clean” the state’s forest floors to help prevent the spread of fires, an argument he has been making publicly for months.
Why should the rest of the country continue paying for California’s bad decisions on forest management and urban development?
HMM: Frank Luntz reveals unprecedented findings on how voters view President Trump.
Author and pollster Frank Luntz said Monday that President Trump’s rhetoric is having an effect on voters that he has never observed before.
Speaking on Fox News Radio’s “Brian Kilmeade Show,” Luntz said new focus group research from the past 10 days shows a majority of voters approve of what Trump is doing as president but disapprove of what he says.
“A majority of the public like what Donald Trump is doing and a majority of the public don’t like what he’s saying. This is the first time that I can remember. Usually, it’s the opposite direction,” he explained, noting that past presidents were generally liked by the public, but their policies turned off voters.
Well, if those are the choices — nice words but bad policies, or the other way around — which do you prefer?
FACE, MEET PALM: Jerry Springer Blames Trump for Decline in Civility.
Flashback (From Ed): Moral Rot And The Age Of Trump: As I wrote in February of 2016, “I’ll eschew the usual conservative jeremiads on the radical changes in culture during the 1960s and ‘70s. But at some point in the mid-1980s, left-leaning programming executives decided that Howard Stern, Jerry Springer, and Morton Downey Jr. would bring in big ratings on radio and TV via shock. In many ways, the Trump campaign feels like a 24/7 version of the Morton Downey Jr. Show, right down to the fact that Downey was a former Democrat who saw an opening with conservative voters to exploit via an aggressive in-your-face Noooo Yewk attitude. (Particularly this past week, when Al Sharpton, whose public career began on the Downey show, made his inevitable guest appearance in the presidential campaign.)”

SCOOP: CIA, FBI Informant Was Washington Post Source For Russiagate Smears. “These close connections between the Washington Post’s David Ignatius and people connected to U.S. and U.K. intelligence raise grave concerns about the deep state using media to push propaganda.”
The concerns aren’t new, but the evidence for them sure is coming in hot and heavy.
ANALYSIS: TRUE. Bureaucrats’ Hurt Feelings On Foreign Policy Don’t Justify Impeachment.
You see, it’s perfectly fine for Hillary Clinton to use her campaign funds to hire foreign national Christopher Steele to investigate Trump using (probably made-up) Russian sources. And there’s nothing wrong with the FBI using those partisan Steele smears to investigate the Obama administration’s political opponent.
Crossfire Hurricane, the official operational title for the investigation, employed assistance from the British government and an Australian diplomat. So the left believes there’s nothing wrong with asking a foreign government for help to investigate a domestic political opponent — so long as that opponent is Trump. After all, “Nobody is above the law, not even Donald Trump.” But if the shoe ends up on the other foot and Trump is the one investigating, it’s a constitutional crisis!
If you listen for more than a few minutes, you realize what’s really going on here is that Trump failed to prostrate himself before the “dedicated career professionals” who possess the “experience and expertise” that Trump supposedly lacks in foreign policy. Read your Constitution. Article II vests the power of foreign policy in the elected president. These “dedicated career professionals” aren’t even mentioned in the Constitution.
Maybe the framers made a drafting error in the Constitution? Or maybe we shouldn’t have a national impeachment circus over the hurt feelings of bureaucrats.
To me, the fuss indicates that this is over much more than “hurt feelings,” but actual criminal activity at risk of exposure.
UPDATE (FROM GLENN): Flashback, March 2017: “Hypothesis: The spying-on-Trump thing is worse than we even imagine, and once it was clear Hillary had lost and it would inevitably come out, the Trump/Russia collusion talking point was created as a distraction.”

RONAN FARROW WANTS TO REVISIT JUANITA BROADDRICK’S “CREDIBLE” ACCUSATIONS AGAINST BILL CLINTON: Is It Time to Cancel Bill Clinton? “Let’s not forget the Left’s famous excuse for Clinton during his impeachment: ‘Everyone lies about sex.’ At one time or another, sure, of course, especially in high school. But hardly anyone lies about sex as President of the United States while under oath because decades of sexual misadventures landed them in a years’-long sexual harassment suit. In fact, I can pretty much only think of just the one.”
Read the whole thing, if you don’t mind me saying so myself.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: ‘Top Tier’ Candidate Campaign Death Watch.
Harris folded up shop in New Hampshire last week and has now put all of her eggs in the Iowa basket. As of this writing, Real Clear Politics has Harris in sixth place there.
What’s most stunning is that Harris has spent more time than any other candidate in Iowa the past couple of months. If you look at the chart on RCP you can see that she has been cratering since September, indicating that she’s the kind of candidate who does worse once the votes get to know her better.
Almost Hillary Clinton-esque.
None of the potential nominees pass my “Could I Stand to See You on TV for the Next Four Years” test, but Harris is worse than most.
NOT OUR CIRCUS: U.S. Troop Withdrawal Creates Opening for Revitalized Syrian Regime.
The Trump administration’s decision to withdraw most U.S. troops from northeastern Syria reordered the security landscape in the country, opening the door for Mr. Assad to reclaim areas he hasn’t held in years.
The Syrian leader will still face numerous challenges. The U.S. is keeping some troops behind to guard oil fields, Turkish forces are pushing into northern Syria and Kurds governing swaths of eastern Syria want to hold on to at least some autonomy.
Kurdish forces have turned to Mr. Assad for protection against the Turkish offensive bent on driving them away from its border, allowing the Syrian military to return and begin re-establishing the central Damascus government’s control.
“Definitely he gains without having to pay or fight,” said a Western diplomat in the region. “Once you give the keys over, it means the regime will, perhaps over some time, return to complete control.”
We’ve seen the local alternative to the Assad regime, and it’s worse.
HMM: With Aramco IPO approval, China cozies up to Saudis.
Now, as the royal family seeks to monetize its massive state-run oil company, Saudi Aramco, with an initial public offering that could value it near $2 trillion, Chinese banks are looking to play a key role in the IPO both by underwriting shares and purchasing the stock, people with direct knowledge of the matter tell FOX Business. A formal announcement on the IPO came Sunday.
“China spreads its resources around in a geopolitically strategic way,” said Charles Horner, a Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute. “And the Chinese have a voracious appetite for oil, which makes a relationship with Saudi Arabia particularly important.”
An outside spokesman for the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, Public Investment Fund, declined comment. A spokesman at the Chinese Ministry of Commerce did not respond to a request for comment.
The Chinese government has been making a concerted effort to cozy up to the Saudis as the royal family seeks to modernize the nation and open itself to outside investment ahead of Saudi Aramco’s pending deal. In February of this year, bin Salman went to Beijing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to hammer out a trade deal with $28 billion in economic agreements. “The Silk Road initiative and China’s strategic orientation are very much in line with the kingdom’s Vision 2030,” bin Salman said in a statement about the two countries.
The more we frack, the less any of this intrigue matters.
