CHANGE (IT BACK): Judge halts California “gig worker” law from taking effect for truckers.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked a new California labor law from impacting more than 70,000 independent truckers. The law, passed late last year, makes it harder for companies to classify workers as independent contractors instead of employees, who are entitled to minimum wage and benefits such as workers compensation.

U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez of San Diego on Tuesday granted a temporary restraining order sought by the California Trucking Association while he considers imposing a permanent injunction.

He said the association is likely to eventually prevail on its argument that the state law violates federal law. He also ruled the truckers would otherwise be likely to suffer irreparable harm, and that temporarily blocking the law from applying to truckers is in the public interest.

The whole thing stinks.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: It’s 2020 So Where Are My Hovercar and Robot Butler? “I have to admit that I had never entertained the idea of an ape chauffeur — I’ve always been more of a robot butler guy. Now that the idea has been put in my head, however, I might be disappointed until it becomes a reality.”

In my imagination 40 years ago, my ape chauffeur was named Caesar.

JONATHAN TOBIN: Most U.S. Jews Don’t Care About anti-Semitic Violence Against the ultra-Orthodox.

The latest incidents did prompt statements of outrage and solidarity from liberal and mainstream Jewish groups. And local authorities in New York are finally responding by stepped-up police patrols in the Brooklyn neighborhoods where assaults of Jews have been happening on a daily basis in recent weeks.

Yet it is still doubtful whether the welfare of the group that has been singled out in this fashion will maintain the attention of the rest of the Jewish community, let alone the news media that is still treating these incidents as primarily a local story rather than one of national significance.

The reason for such skepticism is based on two factors: politics and the antagonism that exists between the ultra-Orthodox and the rest of American Jewry.

Actually, the muted response cuts across lines of faith and ethnicity, probably because the press has chosen to treat the attacks as a local story. You can safely bet that’s by design.

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING: Donor covers multiple adoption fees for animals at HSPPR in need of a forever home.

Tracy Dunson reached out to 11 News on Thursday after the read the post about Bob the dog. Bob was going to be raffled out for adoption after he was reportedly thrown against a car by a suspect authorities believe was high on meth at the time. The winner of the raffle would get Bob with an adoption fee of $400 covering a lot of things from shots to getting neutered. Tracy wanted to cover the adoption fees. She didn’t want any credit for the good deed, but with her permission, we wanted to share her full name.

11 News got Tracy in touch with the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR), which was caring for Bob before he was adopted out on Friday. The shelter worked with Tracy and accepted the $400 to cover fees for other pets in need of a forever home!

Two of the dogs are still available for adoption, if you’re in the Colorado Springs area.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: Bill de Blasio’s New York Is Rapidly Becoming a Dangerous Hellhole. “Leftists are falling all over themselves to blame Trump and “Trump’s America” (code for “You Freakin’ Hicks”) for the rise in violence from New York’s anti-Semites. The reality remains that it’s all happening in an exceedingly liberal city that is being run by a commie they elected to a second term.”

FLIP, MEET FLOP: ‘I would obey any subpoena’: Joe Biden now says.

Biden told the Des Moines Register’s editorial board Friday he would not comply with a Senate subpoena during President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate. It confirmed a statement he made in an interview with NPR earlier in the month.

He began the day Saturday clarifying those remarks on Twitter before making appearances in several Iowa towns.

A “clarifying” about-face, to be sure.

ANALYSIS: TRUE. We Can No Longer Ignore The Attacks On Jews In New York. “It has frankly been astounding how little attention attacks on Jews in the New York City area have received. If any other minority group were subject to such abuse, it would be a leading national story. Why have these attacks been swept under the carpet? The clearest answer seems to be that the news media and our political leadership are uncomfortable with the fact that many of these attacks, including last night’s, were perpetrated by black people.”

People who won’t be held accountable will behave as though they won’t be held accountable.

FLORIDA MAN FRIDAY: From the ridiculous to the heartwarming and back again, it’s a very special Christmas spirit edition.

Plus, for PJMedia’s VIP members: Navy Saved Money with Touch-Screen Controls, Sailors Paid with Their Lives. “Sanchez had planned to have the system’s programmers ‘give the system a full check, a full clean bill of health,’ but the collision occurred, killing ten of his sailors, before that could happen. What did happen was just ugly. On August 21, 2017, the McCain was sailing the crowded shipping lanes 20 miles from Singapore. Sanchez was on the bridge, monitoring the situation, with Bordeaux in charge of steering the ship (via touchscreen controls) while another sailor manned the virtual throttle. But something went wrong, whether with the under-trained sailors, the touchscreen controls, or the system itself. Whatever the case, the McCain did not respond correctly to course adjustments.”

If you aren’t a VIP member but are considering becoming one, the promo code VODKAPUNDIT it still good for a nice little discount.

DECOUPLING: Sonos raises prices on pro products as production moves out of China. “Sonos telegraphed this move earlier in the year, telling analysts on earnings calls that it would be moving production out of China and prices might be affected. The company tells me the move is less about tariffs, which it called a ‘one-time hit,’ and more about diversifying production for the future.”

I suspect the price hikes might be temporary (unless Sonos finds they don’t affect sales), as countries like Malaysia and Vietnam improve their industrial base the way China did.
