YOU’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER BLOG: Chinese Lies Update For May 6, 2020. “Time for another roundup of Chinese lies and perfidy!”

Seriously. A much bigger blog.

To be perfectly clear, this is the communist People’s Republic of China on the mainland, and not the finely-run Republic of China on Taiwan.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: Twitter Makes Big Move Into Thought Policing. “At times it seems as if Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey are engaged in some sort of personal, perverse billionaire fun and trying to see which one can make his platform more heavy-handed when it comes to the freedom of expression of its users.”

UNAMERICAN: Kroger Slaps Ration Limits on Beef and Pork Purchases.

Not being able to get exactly what you want or as much as you might want to stash away in a chest freezer doesn’t mean anyone is going to starve. As I wrote at Instapundit at the end of March, “As a big exporter, I expect we’ll be fine aside from some temporary disruptions as producers and distributors acclimate to the new-but-temporary normal.” That still seems to be the case five weeks later, although given how many state governments have extended their stay-at-home orders, “temporary” doesn’t feel as temporary as it once did.

So perhaps no one is starving, but there’s something damnably unAmerican about purchase limits and a lack of variety. We’re a wealthy, consumer-driven country whose supermarkets have long been the envy of the world. Back when the Soviet Union was still a thing — an evil, vile thing — future Russian President Boris Yeltsin visited an American grocery store in Texas…

You’ll want to read the whole thing, if you don’t mind me saying so myself.

YOU WILL BE MADE TO CONFORM: Pub owner loses licenses after ‘Tucker Carlson Tonight’ appearance.

Rick Savage, the owner of Sunday River Brewing Co. in Bethel, announced on Fox Thursday night that he was reopening his business despite Gov. Janet Mills’ executive “stay safer at home” order to combat the coronavirus.

On Friday, Mr. Savage reopened his establishment to the public, and within hours the Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations seized his health license, and in effect his liquor license, the Sun Journal reported.

Mr. Savage was a speaker Saturday at a large reopen protest at the Statehouse in Augusta, urging other business owners to defy the state and reopen their doors, the Sun Journal reported.

Another reason I’m generally opposed to the conditional licensing of businesses.

PROPAGANDA: ‘Put on a mask and shut up’: China’s new ‘Wolf Warriors’ spread hoaxes and attack a world of critics.

The newscast blares from a television set in a Beijing apartment, carrying through an open window and echoing across the compound. The refrain is the same every evening: praise for China’s handling of the coronavirus, dire scenes from foreign hospitals and condemnations of the United States.

The tone is often withering. Last week, U.S. Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo was declared “the public enemy of humanity.” A few nights later, the anchor feigned sympathy for Americans, who she said were left to die while their government railed against China.

Beijing has pushed this story line at home for months — a mixture of self-congratulation for defeating the virus, denial of central government missteps, and horror at other countries’ failures to contain the pandemic.

Now, facing escalating international criticism over its handling of the outbreak and growing demands for an investigation into its origins, China has taken its strident nationalist message abroad.

How much different in practice is Communist China’s state-controlled media from America’s “free” media?

If it’s been here that much longer than we thought, then the transmission rate (just like the mortality rate) turns out to be less than feared.

We should be operating under different assumptions that we were back in March, but most of the politicians have dug in their heels, refusing to adjust to new information. “Data proof,” I call it.
