DON’T TRUST CHINA. CHINA IS ASSHOLE: Spyware hidden in Chinese tax software was probably planted by a nation-state, say experts. “The malware’s sophistication, and the lack of an obvious quick payoff, seems to show it was planted by a nation-state, says cybersecurity firm Trustwave.”

Earlier this year, a multinational technology vendor doing business in China was instructed by its Chinese bank to install software to pay local taxes.

The tax software was legitimate, but embedded inside it was a nasty surprise, according to a new report by a private security firm: A sophisticated piece of malware that gave attackers complete access to the company’s network.

The firm, Trustwave, has dubbed the malicious software “GoldenSpy,” and is warning others in a report released Thursday to search their networks for it.

It’s the latest example of how companies and individuals should take special care when operating in China, said Brian Hussey, a former FBI cyber specialist and Trustwave’s vice president for threat detection and response.

Once again, the headline refers to the Communist People’s Republic China on the mainland, and not the well-run Republic of China on Taiwan.

SUCKS TO BE BLUE: The Blue State Jobs Depression. “The latest Department of Labor employment data confirm that when it comes to the economy, America is two nations: red and blue. As the post-coronavirus shutdown era begins, blue states are losing jobs at record paces and red states are starting to gain them.”

MISS LIBERTY: George Orwell: Happy Angel Birthday!

I re-watched the Michael Radford movie version of 1984 not long ago — heaven knows what might have made me do that in these days — and it’s held up well in a please-everyone-remember-it’s-a-warning-not-an-instruction-manual way.

KIRA DAVIS: The Problem Isn’t Bubba Wallace, or a Noose… the Problem Is the Media.

Some may ask, “If a story like this hits the mainstream, shouldn’t it be covered immediately? After all, it’s relevant considering current events.” I most certainly am not suggesting a story like this be ignored in the name of peace. What I am suggesting is that a story like this needs to be reported. Not opined, not instantaneously broken down into breathless monologues on slumping cable news channels, not turned into Instagram soundbites set to maudlin, bleak music. Reported. Like news. Because that’s what it is until there’s enough information for it to be something bigger.

If you think that’s an impossible task, consider your local news. They have reporters, entertainment reporters, a weather reporter, and typically what is called an “opinion desk.” They actually make a specific space for opinion. Journalism is what you see on the 5 o’clock news. Straight reporting from the scene of an incident, witness interviews, details, and information. In fact, if you pay attention you’ll notice that often when an anchor tries to get a street reporter to editorialize what is happening around them, they will go to great lengths to avoid descriptions that could feel personally motivated.

Your local news station and publications are the last bastion of real journalism.

Sad.

MY LATEST FOR THE PJMEDIA MOTHERSHIP: Whatever Delirious Thing Biden Has, He Gave It to Obama. “Mass migration, disruptive impacts of technologies, strengthen the global health security, stop, stop the cold… war… future that we’re talking about. We’re talking about a [stumble], a peaceful cold war [stumble]. What are we talkin’ about?”

I’ve actually come to enjoy transcribing Biden’s projectile word vomit.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: It’s Time Cancel the Statue-Toppling Morons. “Many have noted that the stupidity displayed by these young people shows how badly our public schools have failed them. In a column I wrote last week a made the opposite point: this is the triumph of our public education system because whitewashing American history to turn the younger generations into an easily controlled mob has been the point of it all for decades.”

Kruiser mentioned on our VIP video chat yesterday that the column he’s alluding to here didn’t find much of an audience. If you missed it then, you won’t want to miss it a second time: “The Second American Civil War Has Already Been Fought and Academia Won.”

THE PURGE: Jamaal Bowman, Far-Left Primary Challenger, Set To Oust 16-Term NY Congressman. “Left-wing candidate Jamaal Bowman has declared victory in his primary challenge against Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY), the establishment-backed chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee who has served in Congress since 1989.”

AOC it turns out wasn’t a fluke, she was just a cycle early.

CHANGE: Olympus to Exit Camera Business After 84 Years.

The Tokyo company, which has been under pressure from U.S. shareholder ValueAct Capital to improve shareholder returns, said Wednesday that it planned to sell its camera unit to private-equity firm Japan Industrial Partners Inc. It didn’t disclose financial details. The companies aim to complete their deal by the end of the year.

Olympus was a global consumer brand for decades thanks to its cameras, hiring the likes of supermodel Cheryl Tiegs to promote its products on television. It shifted readily to digital cameras in the 1990s and was No. 2 in market share behind Sony Corp. early this century.

As recently as 2007, the dawn of the smartphone era, digital cameras were a $3-billion-a-year business for Olympus. Within a few years, however, most of the market evaporated because people were using their phones to take pictures. Camera revenue shrank to just over $400 million in the year ended March 31, and the business has lost money for the past three fiscal years.

The company’s main product line is now medical-imaging devices such as endoscopes.

There probably isn’t — or at least soon won’t be — room left for more than two, maybe three SLR camera makers.
