JOANNE JACOBS: Men without work. “Just before the pandemic hit, almost 7 million civilian, non-institutionalized men between the ages of 25 and 54 were out of the workforce altogether.”

ANTISOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook blocking my article brought home the urgent need for tech giants to be held accountable.

Earlier this month I wrote an article for UnHerd in response to the World Health Organisation trip to Wuhan in search of the pandemic origins.

My piece was scathing about the belated exercise, arguing that a crucial inquiry for global safety was compromised by shameful appeasement of a dictatorship. It criticised how the team – vetted by Beijing and including one scientist with a clear conflict of interest – disregarded evidence to push China’s narrative that a laboratory leak was “extremely unlikely” and not worthy of further investigation, while claiming the virus might have been imported to the country on frozen food.

Facebook posted a sign warning of false information and alleging “this post repeats information about Covid-19 that independent fact-checkers say is false”. My editors were furious since this impeded sharing of a time-sensitive article, while I was dismayed by a serious allegation that could damage my reputation.

Luckily, I was able to track down a senior executive for the company, who after rapid investigation apologised for their mistake and discarded the sanction. “A fact-checking label was wrongly applied to this post yesterday and it was removed,” he said in an email. “We’re very sorry for any inconvenience or confusion caused.”

Facebook is even clumsier than they are arrogant.

BLUE CITY BLUES: Trump Organization says it is closing Central Park ice rinks after city severs contract.

Two ice skating rinks operated by the Trump Organization are set to close in Central Park at 4 p.m. on Sunday as the city severs its contract with the company. The decision to cut ties by the de Blasio administration came after the Capitol riot, CBS New York reports.

The leases to the Wollman Rink and the Lasker Rink will be terminated on February 26. The rinks are set to close Sunday to allow time for the Trump Organization to move out.

Families decried the move, with one skater pleading for more time. “So much has been taken away from us this year, and this was one thing that was kind of holding us all together,” Mya Henning told CBS New York. “It’s only, like, six weeks more that we’re asking for.”

More: “The Wollman Rink was the one that then-New York Mayor Ed Koch tried and failed to renovate for years at great public expense. Trump took over the project and at his own expense got the rink operating for the public in just six months. The Trump Organization has operated it since, returning most of the profits to public works.

But Orange Man Bad.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: ‘Cancel Trump’ Culture Is Toxic, Juvenile, and Dangerous. “The Democrats are in control of the federal government right now and they have no clear vision for the United States of America other than hating Donald Trump. That would be myopic and stupid in the best of times. With the pandemic still upon us and the economy in dire need of a comeback, it’s a recipe for long term disaster.”

TOM KNIGHTON: The Navy’s Greatest Failure Since Pearl Harbor.

I’m damn proud to have been a part of the Navy. As a former Navy Corpsman, I’m exceptionally proud to part of that group. Read the Wikipedia entry on the Hospital Corps sometime to get an idea why.

Despite that, though, I now weep for the Navy. Why? Well, it seems they’re more interested in “anti-racism” than anything else.

See, the problem here isn’t that it’s asking sailors to not be racists or to stand for their fellow sailors in the face of racism. That’s actually reasonable, in my opinion.

No, the problem here is that it’s turning activism into an order, requiring members of the armed services to step up and act like Critical Race Theory pushers. Failing to do so would likely land a sailor in hot water.

I’m old enough to remember when the Navy was mostly interested in sinking the bad guys’ ships.

Insanity Wrap needs to know: What if the pandemic was nearly over and everybody pretended not to notice?

Answer: That’s less of a “What if?” and more of an “Exactly what’s going on.”

REFILL THE SWAMP: Biden Muscles Out Chicago Prosecutor Hot on the Heels of Powerful Dems.

President Joe Biden is forcing Chicago’s top federal prosecutor to resign amid ongoing criminal probes of powerful Illinois Democrats and their associates.

U.S. attorney John Lausch is prosecuting close confidants of Democrat boss Mike Madigan, an ally of former president Barack Obama who resigned from the state legislature Thursday after a decades-long reign in Springfield. Lausch’s office will also prosecute Chicago alderman Edward Burke (D.), an influential figure accused of strong-arming businesses into retaining his law firm.

Lausch’s abrupt removal has drawn bipartisan criticism from Illinois lawmakers who say he should be allowed to finish his work or depart on a longer timeline to ensure an orderly transition.

When the corruption is so bad that even Illinois Democrats want the investigation to continue…
