SETH MANDEL: Democrats’ Day of Rage.
The background to this is the intra-Democratic Party explosion over Haley Stevens endorsing a Republican.
Until Sunday, Democrats had managed to avoid projecting the same convulsive anger that has come to define the campaign of Abdul El-Sayed, the grouchy left-wing bureaucrat running for Senate in Michigan against the former GOP congressman Mike Rogers.
El-Sayed’s hair-trigger temper has dogged him all campaign but especially since his ties to extremists have come to light and even landed in the New York Times, albeit couched in terms that obscure their significance. Those revelations filled in the picture that was outlined earlier in the campaign when El-Sayed made excuses for a terrorist who attempted to murder dozens of Jewish children in Michigan—“hurt people hurt people,” he said—and then refused to apologize for his justifications of horrific attempted violence. These days he spends his time snapping at reporters who ask him questions.
All of this made El-Sayed’s defeat of Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary the beginning, not the end, of his troubles.
Still, Democrats backed El-Sayed, a fanatically obsessive anti-Zionist with a temper.
That certainly tells you where the party is now — particularly since El-Sayed’s primary win seems to have been due to dirty tricks on his behalf: Sick trolls fess up to making fake polls that helped Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan: ‘Far too easy.’
