JOHN HINDERACKER: The FBI and the Stolen Diary. “It is personal and highly embarrassing, obviously not meant for anyone else’s eyes. But an FBI investigation? A year after the diary disappeared and was published? Since when is the alleged theft of a woman’s diary a federal crime? Let alone a federal crime that warrants investigation by the FBI?”

Plus: “There is a context to this story that goes well beyond the sadness of Joe Biden’s deeply troubled family. The FBI’s once-stellar reputation has been badly tarnished in recent years, and many millions of Americans now see the Bureau as a politicized agency that has become, in important ways, an arm of the Democratic Party. The Case of the Missing Diary may be trivial in itself, but the fact that the FBI is now executing search warrants on the homes of political opponents of the Biden administration, with no national interest at stake other than the reputation of the Biden family, lends support to that suspicion.”

A NEW LOW SO FAR: Gloomy landscape for Democrats in midterms as Biden’s approval drops to 38% in USA TODAY/Suffolk poll. “A year before the 2022 midterm elections, Republicans hold a clear lead on the congressional ballot as President Joe Biden’s approval rating sinks to a new low of 38%. A USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll, taken Wednesday through Friday, found that Biden’s support cratered among the independent voters who delivered his margin of victory over President Donald Trump one year ago.”

BEWARE, IT’S 2021: Unnerving Study Reveals There May Be No Warning For The Next Supervolcano Eruption. “How humanity would respond were such an event to happen again – everything from food supplies to population migrations – isn’t clear, but we might not get a huge amount of notice when the next supervolcanic eruption is on the way, either.”

Another reason to move a substantial portion of humanity off-Earth.

SALENA ZITO: The voters revolt against our cultural curators, again.

Their detachment is not just geographical but cultural, and it is not limited to politics. For decades, the nation’s cultural curators have operated through corporations, national sports organizations, Hollywood, academia, the national news media. More and more, they have become detached from the people who buy, watch, or are educated by them. . . .

I have argued for years that the conservative-populist coalition was born in 2008 when John McCain became the Republican nominee. These voters either stayed home or voted against their interests for Barack Obama because of his candidacy’s historic and aspirational nature.

By 2009, their breakaway began, and the anti-establishment Tea Party movement was born. The 2010 midterm elections demonstrated the coalition’s strength, but it felt the same way toward Mitt Romney as it had for McCain — nice guy but didn’t inspire them. Obama became the first president ever reelected with fewer popular votes and a smaller percentage than his first election.

Instead of listening to the voters, Obama spent his second term going all-in with executive action. Democrats shed their blue-collar and rural voters that had been part of their coalition and went full elite progressive. The 2014 election was the result, an even worse bloodbath for Democrats than 2010.

Two things were missed in the coverage of 2016. First, Trump was never the cause of that election — he was the result of a coalition that had been building for a decade, made up of suburban-educated voters, blue-collar and rural voters, and a growing number of middle-class Hispanic voters. . . .

Now, Biden and the Democrats have been caught once again failing to appreciate why they were sent to Washington, D.C. They underestimated just how toxic their intersection with the cultural curators would be for them — with those constantly telling voters they are insurrectionists and racists and lying about voting laws in Georgia and Texas and Pennsylvania or smearing them because they don’t want idiotic ideas driven into their children’s skulls. On Tuesday, those voters gave Democrats a piece of their mind, not just here in Pennsylvania but also in Virginia, New Jersey, and nationwide.

Will the curators continue to underestimate and insult the electorate? Look to 2022, an inside-out midterm election. It will not be about Trump — oh, how the Democrats misunderstood that on Tuesday. It will not be about spending more money and passing bills people never requested. It will be about their lives, their children, their communities, and their future.

The thing is, insulting the electorate is a vital part of the curators’ self-image. Like many with few positive achievements, they boost their self-esteem by finding others to look down on.

A friend messages: “Kinda hilarious. Voters objected to being demonized. The Dem/media reaction is a thoughtful handwringing demonization, a deep concern about doing a better job of demonizing.”

THE FBI ISN’T A LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY, IT’S A PARAMILITARY FORCE FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT: “So why the raids? Since when does the FBI [conduct] raids over missing diaries?” “What is the alleged federal crime (and what is the precedent for a major federal investigation over such an alleged theft)? What precautions were taken by the Biden Administration in light of the claimed media status of the targeted individuals? Why was there a delay in this action being taken if the alleged theft occurred a year ago? Has this matter been under investigation for a year and did the White House request the intervention of the FBI?”

More here from Jonathan Turley. “Journalist organizations are routinely given material removed from businesses, agencies, or private owners without permission by confidential sources.”

Plus:

There are a host of unanswered questions. Here are five to start with:

What was the context for the diary’s loss? (Did Ashley Biden leave the diary in a room or was it stolen?)

What is the alleged federal crime (and what is the precedent for a major federal investigation over such an alleged theft)?

What precautions were taken by the Biden Administration in light of the claimed media status of the targeted individuals?

Why was there a delay in this action being taken if the alleged theft occurred a year ago?

Has this matter been under investigation for a year and did the White House request the intervention of the FBI?

Regardless of how one feels about Project Veritas, there should be calls from media outlets for some answers to these basic questions. Likewise, Congress should be seeking such answers as part of its oversight responsibilities.

The media won’t be asking these, because the media — like the FBI — see their primary role as protecting the Democratic establishment from political threats.

What’s really astonishing, watching this video, is how spot-on Sinatra’s intonation was.
