“SMUG LITTLE MINDS:” Lecturer who tweeted he was fed-up of marking essays about ‘oppression of women’ leaves role. “Thank God all those papers going on about patriarchy and the oppression of women are out of the way for another year.”
Related: Stasi and Snitch. “There are a number of reasons this kind of hysteria works well in universities. Student unions are as virulent a breeding ground for wannabe leftist politicos and activists as they were in my day (when they had the hots for the IRA and the PLO). These days you get your collective virtuous rocks off on transgenderism, feminism, Islamophobia or whatever. Take your pick, there’s a veritable smorgasbord of outrage available. Unlike the silent majority of individual students, who don’t give a damn about the politics, unions have both a voice and power which they are not afraid to exercise. The indoctrination into this kind of groupthink has been going on throughout the education system before students arrive at university, and is constantly reinforced by the echo chamber of social media.”
HE’S NOT WRONG: Ted Cruz At CPAC: ‘Democrats Have Gone Bat-Crap Crazy.’
THE LEFT CAN’T UNDERSTAND TRUMP VOTERS BECAUSE THEY CAN’T CONCEIVE OF WHAT MOTIVATES TRUMP VOTERS: They’re Dancing on a Powder Keg.
ANDREW SULLIVAN ON TAKING CLIMATE CHANGE SERIOUSLY: “Here’s a suggestion: Focus on a non-carbon energy source that is already proven to be technologically feasible, can be quickly scaled up, and can potentially meet all our energy demands. What we need, given how little time we have, is a massive nuclear energy program. Sure, we can keep innovating and investing in renewables, and use as much as we can. But they are not going to save us or the planet in time. We know nuclear works and does so quickly.”
Yep, that’s the way to go. If what you actually care about is reducing C02 emissions.
OPEN THREAD: Be respectful, it’s Sunday.
DID THEY RUN THIS ONE BY LEGAL FIRST? BECAUSE I THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE RUN THIS BY LEGAL FIRST. Bumble is launching a women-first networking tool that lets recruiters exclude men.
THE 21ST CENTURY IS NOT TURNING OUT AS I’D HOPED: “Eight months after his last trip to our grandparents’ beach house, my brother Alex was diagnosed with a flesh-eating bacterial infection related to leprosy and tuberculosis. And it’s becoming more common.”
SO HOLLYWOOD DID TO HIM WHAT IT’S DONE TO AMERICA: “Jeff Bezos amassed the world’s greatest fortune by relying on what he has called a “regret minimization framework.” He built an $800 billion company with 14 codified principles and a brutally exacting culture. His annual salary of $81,840 has not budged since 1998. But then Mr. Bezos went to Hollywood.”
A FASCINATING BIT OF LITERARY HISTORY: W.H. Auden on No-Platforming Ezra Pound. “Begin by banning his poems not because you object to them but because you object to him, and you will end, as the nazis did, by slaughtering his wife and children.”
TORNADOES HAVE BEEN MUCH LESS COMMON LATELY, BUT THEY’RE STILL BAD WHEN THEY HAPPEN: Reports: 10 dead after possible tornado near Georgia-Alabama line: One of the fatalities was reported to be an 8-year-old girl.
NEW SOCIALIST “IT GIRL” CONTINUES TO PAY DIVIDENDS: Like Most Climate Hysterics, Ocasio-Cortez Doesn’t Practice What She Preaches.
If that argument sounds vaguely familiar, you might recognize it as the timeless excuse made by socialists the world over: “I drive this expensive car and have a dacha on the Black Sea, while you stand in line for five hours waiting for moldy turnips because I’m working hard for a better future for all you peasants.”
In AOC’s case, she feels perfectly justified in being a hypocrite because she’s a selfless leader who will endure “living in the world as it is” until she can make it all better. She really doesn’t want to fly and use gasoline-consuming cars. But she will accept the pain so that she can save us and the world from climate change.
When Al Gore emerged from his energy-guzzling mansion to address the Senate in 2007 only to refuse to take his own energy reduction pledge from An Inconvenient Truth when presented to him by Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Ann Coulter quipped, “I kind of respect him more, it shows he is not stupid enough to believe all this global warming nonsense. He’s trying to get us to believe. Okay, fine, he may be a hypocrite but at least he’s not a moron.”
It’s tough to be as charitable on the latter half of that equation with AOC though — if only to save all those poor defenseless “farting cows and airplanes.”
SNOWFALLS ARE NOW JUST A THING OF THE PAST:
● Shot:
Once, and not so many years ago, no New Yorker would have dignified a January with three chilly days in a row and a soggy spurt of whitish precipitation as winter. Winter in New York was a season of single-digit temperatures, icy winds whipping off the Hudson and snow forts that did not begin to melt until March.
That chilly stuff Thursday that melted as soon as it touched asphalt — snow? A sunny Friday afternoon in the 20’s — bitter cold? In Yazoo City, Miss., or Mobile, Ala., maybe. But not in New York City. Until now. Years of mild, rainy winters seem to be making New Yorkers hungry for the freezing winds and snow they deplored when it was plentiful.

And Dr. Oppenheimer, among other ecologists, points to global warming as perhaps the most significant long-term factor.

● Chaser:
New York City public schools will be closed on Monday because of the winter storm that’s expected to dump heavy snow on the area.
The steadiest periods of snow are expected beginning late Sunday night through the pre-dawn hours Monday. New York City issued a Hazardous Travel Advisory that will be in effect through Monday.
City officials warned that conditions could be hazardous for the Monday morning commute, and advised commuters to take mass transit instead of driving if possible.
“The critical time of the snowfall is on the overnight,” said Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito. “But I think our most critical time will be tomorrow’s rush hour..that’s why we’re urging people stay off the roads.”
—“New York City public schools closed Monday due to winter storm,” WABC News, today.
WABC’s parent company wasn’t predicting such a headline a decade ago: “FLASHBACK: ABC’s ’08 Prediction: NYC Under Water from Climate Change By June 2015.” Curiously though, the network brass never bothered to move their corporate headquarters from its tony Upper West Side address, despite the apocalyptic reports being broadcast from their news division.
But that apocalypse is still on its way! As another New Yorker recently reminded us, we only have 12 years left, so why shouldn’t ABC enjoy Manhattan while they still can?

FLASHBACK: Christian Just Voting For Whichever Political Party Less Likely To Make His Faith Illegal One Day. It’s a satire site, but is it really?
THIS IS A GOOD IDEA: Bipartisan Bill Would Stop States From Denying Occupational Licenses Due to Student Loan Debt. It should be illegal in general to leverage government licenses around unrelated topics: Qualifications for a driver’s license should be limited to driving, qualifications for a plumbing license should be limited to plumbing. And anyway, most things that are licensed shouldn’t be.
SHOCKING NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTS: World Bridge Federation Suspends a Top Player After He Failed a Drug Test. “Yes, bridge as in the card game.”
WE HAVE THE WORST POLITICAL CLASS IN OUR HISTORY: The Worst People Ever (This Week).
DIPLOMACY IS NOT ‘DUCK DYNASTY’ STAR PHIL ROBERTSON’S STRONG SUIT: The A&E reality series maybe isn’t as popular as it once was, but that isn’t stopping patriarch Robertson from offering his blunt analysis of America’s direction.
“We see carnage in the nation’s rehab centers. We see murders. We see people shooting other people at schools and concerts and other places. We need to take a step back and really realize that we must help our country get back on the right track,” Robertson tells LifeZette’s Maureen Mackey in a Sunday interview about his new book, “The Theft of America’s Soul.”
“We need the Scriptures. We must go back to the Bible. We have to love our neighbors and forgive each other. We need patience, kindness, goodness. And we must instill this in our children so that they can instill it in their children,” Robertson said.
One need not be a Dynasty fan or regular church attender to agree that more patience, kindness, goodness, forgiveness and love among us would be a good thing. The trick is how to get us there and Robertson holds nothing back on that score, either. Read the whole thing.
WELL, FOR SOME VALUES OF “COMMON MAN:” The Ferrari F8 Tributo Is a 488 Pista for the Common Man. It’s quite pretty.
FREEDOM’S JUST ANOTHER WORD FOR NO TV SHOW LEFT TO LOSE: “In a new off-the-rails interview, Roseanne Barr calls originators of the #MeToo movement ‘hos’ and attacks Sen. Kamala Harris, Christine Blasey Ford and many other women.”
UPDATE: From the comments: “Kama Sutra Harris. That’s right up there with Pocahontas.”
