THIS FITS WITH MY OWN RETIREMENT PLANS: Americans are retiring to Vietnam, for cheap healthcare and a decent standard of living. Which are to retire to the by-then radically free market (and inexpensive) Republic of Venezuela. “Rapid growth in Vietnam and its Southeast Asian neighbors has created a situation that would have been unthinkable in the past: Aging American boomers are living a lifestyle reminiscent of Florida, Nevada and Arizona, but in Vietnam. Monthly expenses here rarely exceed $2,000, even to live in a large unit like Rockhold’s, including the help of a cook and a cleaner. The neighbors are friendly: A majority of Vietnamese were born well after the war ended in 1975, and Rockhold says he has rarely encountered resentment, even when he talks about his service as a combat veteran.”

Plus: “The Vietnamese were extremely nice to me, especially compared to my own country after I came back from the war.” Sad, but entirely plausible. I mean, it’s not like the Vietnamese hate America.

FLASHBACK: The French, Coming Apart. “Guilluy doubts that anyplace exists in France’s new economy for working people as we’ve traditionally understood them. Paris offers the most striking case. As it has prospered, the City of Light has stratified, resembling, in this regard, London or American cities such as New York and San Francisco. It’s a place for millionaires, immigrants, tourists, and the young, with no room for the median Frenchman. Paris now drives out the people once thought of as synonymous with the city.”

They have dissolved the people and elected new ones. That’s the dream of the globerati everywhere.

YEAR-END REFLECTION: Adriana Cohen: After Unexpected Election, Trump Delivers Bigtime. “What’s happened is a monumental power shift from tone-deaf coastal elites — with their cushy lifestyles and luxury trips to Davos, on private jets of course — to the ‘forgotten’ man, those millions of Americans who actually do the real work of keeping our nation and economy afloat.”

BOSTON HERALD: The Teens: Decade of Trump. “Donald Trump redefined the American political order with his stunning defeat of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a polarizing victory and he’s now under a highly disputed partisan impeachment. . . . Trump has passed broad tax cuts, began a dramatic rollback of regulations and appointed dozens of constitutionalist judges. Despite predictions the stock market would crash, the economy has boomed. He brought North Korea’s Kim Jong Un to the negotiating table — after dire warnings he was provoking a war. He forced the renegotiation of trade relations with Mexico and Canada, and launched a trade war with China — ignoring the threats of consequences. He was vilified for his crackdown on illegal immigration and a freeze on visas for several Muslim nations, though his supporters say his tactics matched those of the Obama administration. He faced a probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election — but wasn’t charged, though special prosecutor Robert Mueller stopped short of exonerating him. . . . Trump, the top story of The Teens, will remain the top story as the new decade starts, as embittered Democrats seek to remove him from office both by impeachment and in the 2020 election.”

WELL, YOU LIVE IN A CIVILIZED STATE, NOT NEW YORK OR NEW JERSEY.

OPEN THREAD: Have fun with it.

BUY A GUN: Jews Are Going Underground: A month of terrible anti-Semitic attacks culminated with a stabbing yesterday of multiple people at a Hanukkah celebration at a rabbi’s home in Monsey, New York.

Wait, did I say buy a gun? Buy several. Query: At what point can President Trump invoke his power under the Civil Rights statutes and the Insurrection Act to declare that New York authorities are incapable of controlling their streets, and send National Guard troops to do so? And is his authority broad enough to suspend New York gun laws so that citizens can arm themselves? (Spoiler: Probably).

SENSIBLE.

PAST PERFORMANCE IS NO GUARANTEE OF FUTURE RESULTS:

Shot: NBC’s Chuck Todd Bashes Christians in Meet the Press Rant Against Misinformation, Trump.

In the midst of their conversation, Todd latched onto a random letter to the Lexington Herald Leader. It was a letter he held up as a “fascinating attempt to kind of explain why some people support President Trump.” Reading from the letter, Todd proceeded to bash Christians, Jews, and Muslims for their religious beliefs:

“Why do good people support Trump? It’s because people have been trained from childhood to believe in fairy tales. This set their minds up to accept things that make them feel good. The more fairy tales and lies he tells the better they feel. Show me a person who believes in Noah’s ark, and I will show you a Trump voter.”

NewsBusters, today.

Chaser: MSNBC’s Ali Velshi “is reading straight from the bible right now on [MSNBC] regarding immigration. Must watch.”

DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS: Texas Church Shooting stopped by two armed parishioners legally carrying guns. Quoth the sheriff: “Today evil walked boldly among us, let me remind you, good people raised up and stopped it before it got worse.”

I think we need a federal civil rights law overriding state restrictions on gun ownership and carrying. If it saves just one life, it’s worth it! And I love that it looks like six people drew on the guy. It shows excellent discipline that only two fired, and no one else but the shooter apparently was hit by them.
