BANANA REPUBLICS ARE GONNA BANANA REPUBLIC: Lula wins fourth term as Brazil president in huge upset.

Lula’s re-election puts the brakes on a wave of Right-wing victories across Latin America, including in Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru – whose leaders have been backed by Donald Trump.

His victory deprives the US president of a major addition to a growing bloc of Right-wing Latin American governments that have embraced Washington’s agenda on security and migration.

“People went to vote because we managed to convince them that voting was very important for ensuring democracy in the country,” Lula said in his first comments after the win.

However, Mr Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, refused to concede early on Monday, declaring he would seek to annul the result over an extension of voting hours.

Voting was extended by two hours on Sunday following a last-minute Supreme Court ruling at the request of Lula, who said buses had been taken out of service in several cities, preventing voters from reaching polling stations.

Mr Bolsonaro also sought an extension in some parts of the country because of heavy rain, but described the decision as “unacceptable” and a “dirty trick”.

“It is impossible to recognise the results. I am going to request the annulment of these elections,” he said during a brief speech.

Or to put it another way:
