LBJ had a similar “desire named streetcar” after the world witnessed the Japanese Bullet Train at the 1964 Olympics, but then Johnson’s Great Society attempted to do pretty much everything, simultaneously, with often disastrous results. Buying union votes was likely a key motivator for his own goal to bring a form of high speed rail to America — or at least the Northeast Corridor — in the form of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Metroliner cars. And while those cars had numerous mechanical issues, at least they (usually) ran, which is far more than Newsom can say about his efforts:
