Did anyone doubt that Colbert would turn Letterman’s former time slot into a late night version of his old Comedy Central series? (Not that Letterman wasn’t hyper-politicized by the end of his run as well, which greatly reduced his potential audience. But then, to paraphrase Santayana, those who failed to learn the lessons of HBO’s The Late Shift are doomed to repeat their mistakes all over again.)
