SOME PARTS OF AMERICA STILL WORK: SpaceX’s Satellite Internet Keeps Getting Better. “While new satellites, dish designs, and routers are on the horizon, my latest performance testing shows that Starlink’s service has improved markedly for most of its 1.3 million users in the US who use the standard Dish V2 equipment. In the last year, we’ve seen access to Starlink grow by leaps and bounds, all while Elon Musk’s satellite service has maintained excellent download speeds, increased upload speeds, and cut latency, according to our data. New hardware promises additional gains, but for now, the test results show that existing customers like me are already getting a better, more mature service than ever before. For rural users without access to cable or fiber, nothing even comes close.”

I’ve been very happy with my Starlink service even with access to cable and, as the story notes, service keeps improving. I’ve also never had to make a tech support call over some outage or frustration, which happened every month or two with Comcast.

DECOUPLING CUTS BOTH WAYS: Apple’s iPhone sales plummet 24% in China, while Huawei’s skyrocket 64% as Chinese consumers abandon American tech. “Since last summer, Huawei has benefitted from the release of its Mate 60 phone series after struggling to source parts for many months due to Western sanctions. The new phone features 47% Chinese-made parts, 18 percentage points higher than the previous model, and is even powered by a Chinese-manufactured chip. The Mate 60 amounts to a major upgrade for many Huawei users, but Apple’s iPhone 15 isn’t quite as enticing among its user base, according to Counterpoint’s Zhang.”

JOEL KOTKIN: California’s progressive regime is weakened — but not defeated. “One might think that Californians would want regime change. After all, the state suffers from a $73 billion deficit, an unemployment rate among the nation’s highest, the highest percentage of residents living in poverty, a failed education system, and mounting business flight. That’s not to mention its massive net outmigration, with a net total of 1.7 million people from domestic migration between 2016 and 2022. Overall the state has 30% of the nation’s homeless population, and is currently witnessing its highest crime rate in a decade.”
