ROGER KIMBALL: The Coming Dethronement of Joe Biden: Biden’s situation presents the unnamed committee who actually runs the presidency with a huge and delicate problem. It can’t last. “Do not, Barack Obama once warned, ‘underestimate Joe’s ability to f— things up.’ What if we get double-digit inflation, plus rising interest rates, plus a recession? We’re well down that road, and though I try to arrange things so that there is no math, I do note that the interest payments on our $30 trillion federal debt are much bigger at 5 percent than they are at roughly 1 percent.”

Flashback: Victor Davis Hanson: Is America Heading for a Systems Collapse?

In modern times, as in ancient Rome, several nations have suffered a “systems collapse.” The term describes the sudden inability of once-prosperous populations to continue with what had ensured the good life as they knew it.

Abruptly, the population cannot buy, or even find, once plentiful necessities. They feel their streets are unsafe. Laws go unenforced or are enforced inequitably. Every day things stop working. The government turns from reliable to capricious if not hostile.

Consider contemporary Venezuela. By 2010, the once well-off oil-exporting country was mired in a self-created mess. Food became scarce, crime ubiquitous.

Radical socialism, nationalization, corruption, jailing opponents, and the destruction of constitutional norms were the culprits.

Between 2009 and 2016, a once relatively stable Greece nearly became a Third World country. So did Great Britain in its socialist days of the 1970s.

Joe Biden’s young presidency may already be leading the United States into a similar meltdown.

WELL, YES: If the media had treated Biden like they did Trump, Trump would’ve been reelected. “New polls released this weekend show terrible numbers for the Biden administration. In one poll, most respondents stated they feel the country is headed in the wrong direction. In another, respondents revealed they would support a candidate other than President Joe Biden if the election were today. These results are despite a media sympathetic to Biden’s administration. But the fact that Biden’s numbers are still this poor shows just how badly Biden has been doing. Had the media treated former President Donald Trump like they do Biden, Trump would’ve won reelection. . . . It’s shocking to have such lousy polling numbers despite positive media coverage, especially when compared to Trump. Biden has enjoyed almost double the amount of positive news coverage compared to the Trump administration, the Pew Research Center revealed. Additionally, the research shows that Biden has had significantly fewer ‘negative assessments’ in the media compared to Biden.”

VOTERS REJECT HER WHENEVER THEY’RE GIVEN THE CHANCE: Voters reject Hillary Clinton, saying she would lose to Biden and Trump. “In the first polling deep dive into her chances to win the 2024 Democratic presidential primary and eventual race against Trump, Clinton turned out to be no more popular than Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and far less popular than Vice President Kamala Harris and former first lady Michelle Obama in a potential primary.”

TRANSPARENCY: British Medical Journal Demands Immediate Release of All COVID-19 Vaccine, Treatment Data.

The British Medical Journal (BMJ) has demanded the full and immediate release of all data related to COVID-19 vaccines and treatments, saying it is in the public’s interest to do so.

BMJ, a weekly peer-reviewed medical trade journal published by the trade union the British Medical Association, called for the release of the data in an editorial published on Wednesday.

“Today, despite the global rollout of COVID-19 vaccines and treatments, the anonymized participant-level data underlying the trials for these new products remain inaccessible to doctors, researchers, and the public—and are likely to remain that way for years to come,” BMJ said. “This is morally indefensible for all trials, but especially for those involving major public health interventions.”

BMJ also accused pharmaceutical companies of “reaping vast profits without adequate independent scrutiny of their scientific claims,” pointing to Pfizer, whose COVID vaccine trial was “funded by the company and designed, run, analyzed, and authored by Pfizer employees.”

New York-headquartered Pfizer still holds that trial data and has indicated that it won’t begin considering requests for such data until May 2025—24 months after the primary study completion date of May 15, 2023, which is listed on ClinicalTrials.gov.

Meanwhile, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had asked a judge to give it 75 years to produce all the data concerning the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine.

However, a judge earlier this month ordered that the FDA make public 12,000 pages of the data it used to make decisions regarding approvals for the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine by the end of the month. The FDA must also release Pfizer’s vaccine data at a rate of 55,000 pages a month until all of the requested pages are public.

BMJ also noted that AstraZeneca has indicated that it may be ready to entertain requests for data from a number of its phase III trials. However, the Cambridge-headquartered company says that the timeline for such data can “vary per request and can take up to a year upon full submission of the request for analysis, decision, anonymization, and sharing of the requested data or documents.”

They’re already shielded from liability. It’s asking a lot to also be shielded from scrutiny.

HARSH, BUT FAIR:

HMM: Former NASA administrator Bridenstine endorses candidate in Virginia congressional race. “Bridenstine told SpaceNews he decided to endorse John Henley, a former U.S. Air Force legislative liaison who worked on the standup of the U.S. Space Force, because of his space and national security expertise. Henley announced Jan. 20 he will be running for the House seat in Virginia’s 10th district currently occupied by two-term incumbent Jennifer Wexton (D).”

RICHARD FERNANDEZ: Is Putin Bluffing in Ukraine? “The cooler heads must know that the joyride will end badly, but the defect of the Russian system is that no one can grab Putin and tell him ‘to take it easy, bro.'”

IF THIS WERE ABOUT NEW MOMS, THEY WOULD BE VICTIMS OF SOCIETY: Vast number of new dads lead unhealthy lifestyles, survey finds.

Also, fathers’ health isn’t important for their sake, but for someone else’s: “The findings are significant because new fathers ultimately play an important role in the health and well-being of their children, the researchers said.”

PROTESTING VACCINE MANDATES IN CANADA: Trucker protest to Ottawa to pass through Medicine Hat. “Organizers say up to a thousand trucks will pass through Medicine Hat Monday morning. Truckers will be travelling to Ottawa saying they want to vocally protest Ottawa’s new vaccine rule. And support for Monday’s convoy is strong, say organizers. . . . As part of the new mandate, truck drivers must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or face a two week quarantine when crossing into Canada, however the trucking industry is facing challenges including supply chain disruptions and a driver shortage. The Canadian Trucking Alliance estimates the vaccine mandate could result in a loss of up to 16 thousand cross border drivers.”

Related: Elevators working in reverse as Alberta cattle feeders face increasingly desperate feed shortage. “Labour shortages, due to COVID-19 and more, have exacerbated the challenge in some situations, causing delays with loading and unloading trains and trucks. Several feedlots say delays in unloading trains have resulted in the railway putting a lower priority on these shipments. In some cases, they’ve been penalized financially with demurrage fees. There’s also concern the Canadian and U.S. government’s cross-border vaccination mandates, taking effect January 15 and 22, respectively, are removing a significant number of truck drivers from the road. Several sources told RealAgriculture they’ve also heard of a train being delayed due to crew members not wanting to have to quarantine in Canada.”
