GOOD:

HELEN TRIES IT: I have read two out of the three of the The Hard Man Novels written by Howard McEwen and decided this week to read the third book, Wrath: A Hard Man Novel (The Hard Man Series). What I loved about this particular book is that it is set in Northern Kentucky where I have spent a bit of time so it seemed familiar. The book looks at the lives of two men, one a politician named William Goebel and the other is a mountain man who came from a very different background. The book is rich with the history of the late 1800’s which the author explores in vivid detail. I felt like I was getting a history lesson as well a reading a great story. Wrath is engaging, well-written and draws you in from the first page. I highly recommend it. I have given this book at Helen’s Page a verified status.

REPORTER ROASTED FOR RECREATING “NORMAL TEEN BEDROOM” FOR DRUG SCAREMONGERING:

The latest attempt to cause parental panic comes courtesy of Paige Hulsey, a journalist at St. Louis’s CBS affiliate KMOV. Hulsey tweeted, “Looks like a normal teen’s bedroom, right? Think again. Coming up on @KMOV, we’ll show you what parents should be looking for so they can identify signs of drug use. I was shocked at what I found in this room!!! #stl #n4tm” along with a photo of a “teenager’s bedroom”:

The tweet quickly went viral for Hulsey’s absurd mock-up of a teenage bedroom. Looking at the image, this is quite clearly a hastily thrown together set piece in the corner of a commercial office. It also leans heavily on every stoner cliché there is, from a massive tie-dye wall hanging to a sign that reads “Mile 420.” Whoever this “teen” is, they sure aren’t hiding their love of weed from this ace reporter. There’s a lot to unpack here: unopened soda cans, a bra on the floor, a Lauren Conrad book, the barest of bookshelves, the industrial carpet. Print magazines?! I doubt a teenager even set foot in this room.

To be fair though, the completed video clip is surprisingly impressive:

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: Humorless Democrat Marxists Are Terrified of the Babylon Bee. “America was a different place when I first went on the road doing stand-up. It seemed like everyone wanted to laugh back then. I would do gigs in big cities and medium-sized towns all over the country and they would all be packed. There was no political divide when it came to comedy. I kid you not, Republicans and Democrats would sit in the same audiences and laugh at the same things.”

PORTLAND’S JUST FINE, STORIES OF ITS PROBLEMS ARE JUST CREATIONS OF THE RIGHT-WING FEVER SWAMP:

ADIOS, GRINGO: a tribute to John McAfee.

John possessed an extraordinary emotional intelligence behind the leathery exterior. He had the soul of a poet and composer. In interviews about his latest crypto or blockchain scheme, he would veer off-topic and talk about, say, the genius of John Lennon. That was ultimately the most fascinating thing about him. It made him truly accessible in the social media age. He regularly conversed with his social media followers and responded to unsolicited podcast appearance requests, genuinely because it seemed he loved putting on a show. He had real charisma. John McAfee also built up an entire myth of himself. What was real? What wasn’t? This made him even more absurdly well-suited to the social media age. He understood the media enough to manipulate it. He once mused on Twitter that ‘A world in which dogs write poetry is more believable than the world as seen through the eyes of the media.’ That’s a great line. As old world media collides and colludes with new tech oligarchs, it has become more and more true.

Read the whole thing — the punch line is a riot.

ABOUT THAT PERMANENT DEMOCRATIC MAJORITY… As Democrats go hard left, Hispanics head to the center.

In a recent New York Magazine interview, Democratic pollster David Shor weighed in on his party’s performance in the 2020 election. Based on the interview, it appears that Democrats continue to interpret 2022 in the context of demographics, race and class and less about voters’ belief systems and positions on issues.

Give him credit: Shor does recognize that white liberal elites are pushing the party to the left and alienating certain voter groups, including Hispanics.

“We’ve ended up in a situation where white liberals are more left wing than Black and Hispanic Democrats on pretty much every issue: taxes, health care, policing, and even on racial issues or various measures of ‘racial resentment,’” he told the magazine. “So as white liberals increasingly define the party’s image and messaging, that’s going to turn off nonwhite conservative Democrats and push them against us.”

They’re not leaving the Democratic party — the Democratic party is leaving them.
