JOANNE JACOBS: Teens choose jobs over high school, college. “I fear dropout rates will go way up, unless high schools, community colleges and employers can offer job-centric pathways to disconnected, disaffected young people.”
UPDATE (FROM GLENN): It would probably also help if they didn’t tell male students that they’re rapists and oppressors. Just spitballing here.
HMM: Study finds women can predict a man’s attitude toward casual sexual relationships based on his face. “They found that the women were able to accurately match the sociosexuality of the males in the pictures to their scores on the questionnaires they had taken. They were able to tell if a man was looking for casual sex rather than a long-term relationship, just by looking at his face. For the men, it was a different story. While most of them thought they would be able to tell, they actually did no better than if had they chosen randomly. The researchers found patterns in the pictures of the men—those who were more open to a casual sexual relationship had wider spaces between their eyes and broader faces in general, along with wider noses, stronger jawlines and thinner lips—traits, the researchers note, that have been attributed to males with higher levels of testosterone.”

MORE LIKE THIS, PLEASE: Blackburn praises Open Technology Fund’s impact in Cuba. “Sen. Blackburn in May 2020 introduced the Open Technology Fund Authorization Act, S. 3820, with U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) to expand the U.S. government’s support for internet freedom by addressing authoritarian regimes’ escalating efforts to censor, restrict and surveil the internet. The bill became law as part of H.R.6395, the William M. (Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021. The FY21 NDAA became law on January 1, 2021 after Congress overrode President Donald Trump’s veto. The U.S. Agency for Global Media’s (USAGM) Open Technology Fund provides funding for Psiphon, an internet censorship circumvention tool that is allowing Cuban activists to continue organizing protests online and daily unique users have spiked to over 146,000 since the demonstrations in the country began, according to the senator’s office.”
PETER SCHIFF: The Transitory Inflation Ruse. “It is certainly possible that we can finish 2021 with 10% CPI, which would rank it as bad as any of the years that we had during the 1970s. Except 10% in 2021 is not 10% in 1971 or 1979 because this is not your grandfather’s CPI. This is a completely different CPI that is completely rigged and reverse engineered. If we actually have 10% inflation, if we measured prices the way we did back in the 1970s, it’d probably be 15 or maybe 20% inflation.”

ROGER SIMON: Cuba, Iran, and the Shame of the United States.
If I hadn’t left the Democratic Party years ago, I would leave it now.
Their namby-pamby, lip-service reaction to the uprising of the Cuban people against 62 years of brutal communist oppression is shameful beyond words.
Apparently, the protests are a bit inconvenient for them. AOC might be embarrassed if they said or did anything, not to mention Bernie.
The Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas warned Cuban refugees not to come (while the border is open to practically everybody else, from Houthis to extra-terrestrials) put the capper on it.
The Coast Guard has evidently already been alerted not to allow this freedom-loving riff-riff on our shores. After all, some of them might vote Republican.
Cuban-born himself, Mayorkas’ behavior is not that far from the Jewish Kapos who kept order for the Nazis inside the concentration camps. What he’s done—no doubt on orders from above—is that repellent.
But the Democrats clearly had and have more important fish to fry, like prolonging the fiction that another freedom-oriented demonstration (Jan. 6), clumsy as it might have been, was a veritable “insurrection.” (The poor folks just somehow forgot to bring guns.)

IT’S THEIR WAY: Bidenflation is real, and Democrats will make it worse. “Despite their zero-margin control of the Senate, Democrats are governing as though voters had given them a massive majority that justified dispensing with negotiation and bipartisanship. In an inflationary economy, they want to borrow and spend even more money for ideological goals that are irrelevant at best and damaging at worst to the vigorous economic recovery that Biden inherited upon taking office.”

MY NEW YORK POST COLUMN: The Navy needs to stay focused — or we’re doomed.
“‘You had one job!’ is an Internet meme focusing on spectacular failures. Too many of our institutions that have one difficult job would prefer to do other, easier things instead. Without mechanisms to hold their feet to the fire and force them to focus on their real reasons for existence, they tend to drift into things that are easier, and bring their leaders acclaim from their peers, even if those things don’t actually matter.”

UM: NHTSA Cautions Against Leaving Chevrolet Bolt EVs Indoors. “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued an alert pertaining to Chevrolet Bolt owners, as the vehicles’ LG Chem battery packs could have a propensity to catch fire. On Wednesday, the safety organization recommended that the cars be left outdoors (ideally a healthy distance from anything flammable) and never left unattended while charging.”
Plus: “While EV fires haven’t been the norm, they’re happening at a pace that’s definitely undermining public trust. This is especially bad considering large swaths of the industry and most governments are hellbent on transitioning entirely over to alternative energy vehicles in the coming decade. Automakers and suppliers clearly need to do better because purchasing modern EVs still requires trading off some of the conveniences of internal combustion vehicles to get the benefits of at-home charging and quiet operation. Under normal circumstances, deciding between them involves some contemplation on what your driving needs actually entail. But owning a car that won’t catch fire is a prerequisite for most consumers and unlikely to be something they’ll be willing to compromise on.”
LOCKDOWN FALLOUT: Apple employees threaten to quit as company takes hard line stance on remote work. “Apple will apparently make exceptions for people with documented medical conditions, but acquiring that accommodation reportedly requires employees to confirm their status by releasing medical records to the company. The demand made some people uncomfortable, the report said.”
THIS IS THE CORRECT WAY TO DEAL WITH GROWN-UP TEMPER TANTRUMS: Major Texas Democrat Stripped of Leadership Post for Fleeing the State. “Calls to strip Democrats who fled Texas from their House leadership posts have been growing throughout the week. Texas Republican Party Chairman Matt Rinaldi clarified that yes, leaders appointed to their posts by Speaker Dade Phelan can be stripped of their leadership assignments. Moody is the first Democrat known to be subjected to it. Speaker Phelan did not start small with this move.”
REMEMBER THE MISERY INDEX? It’s back, according to Issues & Insights. Actually, it never left town. But it was so low under His Fraudulency’s predecessor that the “news” media wouldn’t touch it for fear of saying something remotely positive about Orange Man Bad.
The misery index hit its historical high of 21.9 under Jimmuh Cawta and it has gone up every month since January 20, 2021. I’m from out of town and all, but I’m thinking a new record high is in the offing for the misery index.
