WELCOME BACK, CARTER: Iran-Backed Houthi Terrorists Plunge Biden Into His Second Hostage Crisis. “When we wondered how a President could ever deliver worse foreign AND domestic policy than Jimmy Carter, we never dreamt that someone would be dumb enough to take that as a challenge. Then again, we never dreamt the Democrats would nominate someone known during his Senate career as a blowhard who wasn’t too bright. Some of his senate colleagues described him as fifteen pounds of crap in a ten-pound bag. Now, not even a year into his Presidency, Biden’s America faces its second hostage crisis.”

KAROL MARKOWICZ: There is no case against Dave Portnoy.

#MeToo started with Harvey Weinstein, ‎Matt Lauer, R. Kelly. Big names who did very bad things. Masturbating in plants, desk buttons that locked doors, women being held against their will, rape.

But now we’re on to chasing down every woman a famous man has slept with to get a couple of them to say they had a bad time.

A piece in Business Insider last week accused Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy of just that. Two women accuse Portnoy of sex they didn’t enjoy. If the era of #MeToo was kicked off with Portnoy instead of Weinstein, it would have been a complete bust. #MeToo caught fire because the accusations against these famous men were so major. The accusations against Portnoy are not.

Portnoy has taken the accusations very seriously and has aggressively responded. We haven’t seen any of the previously accused men put up a fight like this.

In a freewheeling hour-long press conference, Portnoy spent an hour breaking down the details of the case against him. He vehemently denies the accusations and has produced text messages from the girls following the encounters as well as showing an absurd police report where a mom of one of the girls vaguely accuses Portnoy of inviting 18-year-old girls to his house.

And note this: Dave Portnoy calls out the Washington Post for not allowing him to record his interview with the paper.

Washpo — “Portnoy declined to comment for this story after The Post declined his terms for conducting an interview.”

My terms were let me record interview so you can’t cut and edit. Same thing I offered to let Business Insider do. Weird how nobody but me will accept these terms.

Not so weird when you flashback to something Jill Abramson, former editor of the New York Times, admitted in 2019. “I do not record. I’ve never recorded. I’m a very fast note-taker. When someone kind of says the ‘it’ thing that I have really wanted, I don’t start scribbling right away. I have an almost photographic memory and so I wait a beat or two while they’re onto something else, and then I write down the previous thing they said. Because you don’t want your subject to get nervous about what they just said.”

In September of 2008, after Charlie Gibson of ABC’s deceptively edited his interview with Sarah Palin, Glenn warned “Bring Your Own Camera.” Similarly, when sitting down with a print journalist, make sure the Voice Memo app has been activated on your iPhone.

THURSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM: This One Photo Explains Everything You Need To Know About the Democratic Party.

1) Millionaires and billionaires

Getty, the great-granddaughter of oil baron J. Paul Getty, is presumed to have inherited several billion dollars after her father, John Gilbert Getty, died in 2020. Her grandfather, Gordon Getty, has helped finance the careers of prominent California Democrats such as Willie Brown, Gavin Newsom, and Pelosi. Billionaires and their wealthy scions tend to be loyal backers of the Democratic Party, whose most generous supporters include George Soros, Walmart heiress Christy Walton, Apple heiress Laurene Powell Jobs, and the Pritzker family, heirs to the Hyatt hotel fortune. J.B. Pritzker was elected governor of Illinois in 2018, and the 2020 Democratic primary featured two billionaires, Tom Steyer and Michael Bloomberg.

5) Anti-Semites

The bride’s dress was covered in shards of broken glass, which may or may not have been an homage to the anniversary of Kristallnacht. The bridal gown and the bridesmaid dresses were designed by British fashion icon John Galliano, who also attended the wedding as a guest. In 2011, he was convicted in a Paris court for making anti-Semitic remarks, which is illegal under French law. “I love Hitler,” Galliano reportedly told a group of Italian women at a café during Paris Fashion Week. “People like you would be dead today. Your mothers, your forefathers would all be f—ing gassed and f—ing dead.” In recent years, the Democratic Party has become a space for anti-Semites.

And of course, “Guests were asked to wear masks during the ceremony, but photos from the multi-day affair reveal that the California Department of Public Health’s recommendation regarding the use of masks indoors was largely ignored,” even as: Newsom Quietly Extends California’s ‘State of Emergency’ for Third Time.

(Classical reference in headline.)

RIP: New York Giants legendary linebacker Sam Huff dies at age 87. “Huff always will be remembered as the furious middle linebacker in a 4-3 scheme developed for him by fellow Hall of Famer Tom Landry, his defensive coordinator with New York and later the architect of the Dallas Cowboys’ rise to power…’The Twentieth Century,’ a documentary television program hosted by Walter Cronkite on CBS that began in the late 1950s, once broadcast a piece on him entitled ‘The Violent World of Sam Huff.’ Huff wore a microphone during practice and an exhibition game for the piece.”

CHEERS TO DRUNK POLITICIANS:

Cockburn has always been suspicious of politicians who don’t drink. The track record there isn’t very good: Hitler, Biden, Trump, Che Guevara, the grand old Duke of York Prince Andrew. Contrast that to history’s legions of statesmanlike squifflers, from Winston Churchill to George Washington to Vaclav Havel.

Hence why Cockburn is struggling to understand why Michigan attorney general Dana Nessel is under fire for getting a bit tibbly.

Nessel, a Democrat, apologized on her Facebook page Wednesday for having had too much to drink at a tailgate party before a college football game. She admitted that she’d been imbibing on an empty stomach, and said she’d later felt sick and had to leave the stadium so as to, as she put it, “prevent me from vomiting on any of my constituents.”

Cockburn notes that this has to be the first time in history that a politician has put such a hypothetical into writing. Yet if George H.W. Bush can yak into the Japanese prime minister’s lap, then surely Nessel doesn’t have too much to worry about here.

Exit quote: “Against all that, Nessel seems like the puritan of the bunch. And perhaps, Cockburn reflects, the real problem here isn’t the boozing but the expectation of outrage that now accompanies our every slip-up. ‘My staff has pleaded with me to hire a crisis-management PR firm,’ Nessel noted in her post. Even with a splitting headache, she still had more sense than that.”

CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM STAR SLAMS CANCEL CULTURE, SAYS SHOW GIVES HER ‘TREMENDOUS FREEDOM:’

[Larry] David resists Cancel Culture, both in refusing to soften his character’s edges and not bowing to woke demands. It sounds like Susie Essman, who co-stars as Larry’s frenemy on “Curb,” is firmly on David’s side.

Essman, a veteran actress and stand-up performer, told The Jerusalem Post why she’s no fan of Cancel Culture. She also defended David for not bowing to the mob, either on “Curb” or elsewhere.

…Larry does not care if he’s politically incorrect and who he offends. He doesn’t care. He’s an equal opportunity offender. If he doesn’t care, then I certainly don’t. It gives me tremendous freedom to do whatever I want to do.

Once again, it’s comedians who are keeping free speech alive. Why, it’s as if all real comedy is ultimately conservative or something.

Earlier: Destroying Comedy: David Zucker, the co-writer and director of a little-known and rarely watched comedy film called Airplane! on the state of comedy today, and those who are attempting to eliminate it.

CULTURE OF CORRUPTION: Energy Secretary Granholm Violates Ethics Pledge To Boost Proterra, Watchdog Claims. “Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm committed a “flagrant” violation of ethics rules by using her official position to promote products of her former employer, electric bus manufacturer Proterra. . . . Government watchdog Protect the Public’s Trust notified the Department of Energy’s inspector general on Friday of its concerns regarding a Nov. 1 event in which Granholm appeared at an official administration event with Proterra buses prominently displayed behind her. Granholm’s participation in the event, where more than $100 million worth of government grants were announced to support electric vehicle manufacturers, was a ‘conscious, flagrant affront to her ethics obligations,’ the watchdog wrote.”

ROGER KIMBALL: The doctor is mad.

Hold the presses! The American Medical Association, together with the Association of American Medical Colleges, have just issued Advancing Health Equity: A Guide To Language, Narrative And Concepts. Is this the item of supreme self-infatuation that will begin the great awakening from wokeness? Maybe.

From first sentence to last, the aroma of scolding virtucratic entitlement is by turns noxiously cloying and comically rebarbative.

For the comedy, try on these opening words: “The field of equity, like all other scholarly domains . . .” You snorted, didn’t you? You know that “equity” — which is Newspeak for Marxoid attacks on private property and merit-based advancement — is not a “field,” much less a “scholarly field,” but a vapid epithet chosen because it conjures edifying moral associations.

No sooner have we stumbled over the “field of equity” than we’re clobbered with a “Land and Labor Acknowledgement.” The Association of American Medical Colleges’ headquarters is “located in Washington, D.C., the traditional homelands of the Nacotchtank, Piscataway and Pamunkey people.” The headquarters of the AMA — the American Medical Association, for God’s sake — are “located in the Chicago area on taken ancestral lands of indigenous tribes, such as the Council of the Three Fires, composed of the Ojibwe, Odawa and Potawatomi Nations, as well as the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee.”

It never stops. We must use capital-B “Black” when referring to black people but never capital-W “white.” “It is critical,” we are told, “to address all areas of marginalization and inequity due to sexism, class oppression, homophobia, xenophobia and ableism.” Whom have we left out?

Read the whole thing, and then update your copy of the Newspeak dictionary accordingly, comrade.

ELECTRICIANS, TRUCK DRIVERS, LONGSHOREMEN, NOW THIS: How a nationwide shortage of plow drivers, could make for a long winter. “There are signs up around the city pleading for employees. But so far, Chelmsford is short about dozen plow drivers. They have the equipment; they just don’t have the people. . . . And it’s not just the cost of paying plow drivers that is going to hit communities hard this winter. The price of road salt has skyrocketed by as much as 31%.”

There’s always a shortage of people who do useful things. But never a shortage of people who spew useless bullshit.
