EXPERIMENTING WITH Bullpup Shotguns. “Just ten years ago, we had a defensive shotgun market that was completely dominated by conventional designs that were essentially modified sporting shotguns. Many of those designs were several decades old. Today we’ve got a variety of new options — ultra compact shotguns with twice the ammo capacity of the old models. Guns that were designed from the ground up for the mission of personal protection. As a fan of shotguns, it’s very exciting to finally see some genuine attempts at innovation.”

THAT’S NOT GOOD: Engineers say leaning tower of San Francisco is on the move again.

The building, known for years for a pronounced tilt, moved another quarter inch during the four days it took to install a test piling, NBC Bay Area reported. The tower has settled almost two inches at the northwest corner and tilts just more than two feet at the same edge since work to secure its north and west sides began in May.

The latest data, which tracks settlement, tilting and water pressure levels under the building, shows that it also settled another tenth of an inch during the installation.

Geotechnical engineer Bob Pyke said the movement is small yet significant. “This is a large drop — you can’t see the scale on this plot — but this is a pretty dramatic effect,” he told NBC.

At least this is being taken more seriously than the city’s crime problem.

THE FBI IS AN EMBARRASSMENT THESE DAYS:

The Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) initiated an investigation after receiving information from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) alleging that, while working for the FBI overseas, multiple then FBI officials solicited, engaged in, and/or procured commercial sex. It was also alleged that one of the FBI officials provided another of the officials a package containing approximately 100 white pills to deliver to a foreign law enforcement officer. During its investigation, the OIG found indications that three of the FBI officials may also have failed to report unofficial contacts with foreign nationals.

Will any face actual charges?

ANALYSIS: TRUE. The Supply Chain is the Perfect Asymmetric Target.

Two factors have brought the otherwise dry subject of supply chain security to the top of the political risk table. One has been the pandemic, in which we have become painfully aware of the fragility of supply chains and the over-dependence of Western countries on external providers, particularly in China. We have also realised how little we actually understand about our supply chains: which companies are in them, who owns them, who controls them and how they can be disrupted.

The other factor has been the SolarWinds attack, almost exactly a year ago. The sophistication of this compromise of the software supply chain, which had probably been active for at least a year before it was discovered, captured headlines around the world. This was partly because SolarWinds Orion was in use by a whole range of government agencies and major companies. More acutely than many other earlier third-party compromises, it illustrated why supply chain companies are such attractive targets: their security is often poor and they represent a softer way into a vast range of customers, including many companies that would in themselves be a hard target. The supply chain is the perfect asymmetric attack.

THE EMERGING ZEITGEIST IS NOT FRIENDLY TO DEMOCRATS: Let’s Go Brandon stores selling anti-Biden merch take off in New England. “The collection of seven shops, six in Massachusetts and one in Rhode Island, is the brainchild of Keith Lambert, founder of New England for Trump, who said the stores are resonating with customers eager to tout their opposition to President Biden.”

WHAT CHRIS WALLACE DOES NEXT: “If Wallace uses his airtime to trash his former employer on a regular basis, he would certainly lose the moral high ground. He would also prove that, for the right paycheck, he will do and say whatever Jeff Zucker tells him to, which is often how it goes for news personalities at CNN. But if Wallace is able to maintain his current reputation, he may be able to help CNN forge a new identity, beyond being a band of Fox News screechers on social media. Given the track record of other recent CNN hires, there is little cause for optimism.”

GOODER AND HARDER: It’s Official: Generator Ban Passes in California. “The California Air Resources Board (CARB) passed a regulation aimed at “Small Off-Road Engines” on Thursday that will ban the sale of portable generators in the state — which includes generators mounted in recreational vehicles. The ruling bans the sale of gas-powered leaf blowers and lawnmowers in the state beginning in 2024. Portable generators will be required to meet more stringent standards in 2024 and meet zero-emission standards starting in 2028. In the 2024 model year, portable generators will have to improve their efficiency by somewhere between 40% and 90%, which seems unrealistic in such a short period of time, so the reality is, it will be very hard to find a generator in Calfornia in two years.”

UPDATE (FROM GLENN): I’m opening a generator superstore just across the line in Nevada. Who’s in?

I DONATED CONVALESCENT PLASMA FOR MOST OF A YEAR, SO I HOPE SO: Study: Blood plasma may be effective against COVID-19 when used correctly. “Blood plasma collected from people who have recovered from COVID-19 works well as a treatment for those who develop serious symptoms from the virus, a study published Monday by JAMA Internal Medicine found. To be most effective, however, the plasma, administered via transfusion, must be initiated early in the course of the disease, in hospitalized patients, before they require high levels of supplemental oxygen or become hypoxic, the researchers said.”

Yes, most Covid treatments work better if you administer them before people are actually dying.
