JOSH BLACKMAN: Deans Should Not Solicit Signatures For Statements On Matters Of Public Concern.

For professors, a deanship can be the capstone of a successful career. But in many regards, becoming a Dean is constricting. Professors have wide latitude to write and speak about their scholarly agenda. Moreover, professors–especially law professors–can engage in advocacy to promote their ideas. But Deans lose much of that autonomy. Of course, Deans are still allowed to engage in scholarly pursuits. But their primary goal should be promoting their institution’s interests. And when a Dean’s scholarly pursuits conflicts with the mission of the institution, the latter will usually prevail. Often, this conflict will limit a Dean’s ability to engage in public advocacy. Or at least this conflict is supposed to limit a Dean’s ability to engage in public advocacy.

Over the past year, law school Deans have often departed from this traditional role. Deans have issued a never-ending series of statements about “systemic racism,” criminal justice, and so on. Some of these Deans have a background in writing about these issues. Most of them do not. Many of these deans are writing about topics for which they lack any expertise. Additionally, these statements are often issued on behalf of the law school. Of course, these statements were never put up for a faculty vote. But the lack of any consensus is besides the point. Deans should not take official positions on contested matters of public concern. A university is designed to allow scholars to seek truth and knowledge. When the Dean adopts an official position, the College has established an orthodoxy.

Well, empty virtue-signaling is the order of the day in our decaying civil society, both as a symptom, and as a cause of further decay.

JIM TREACHER: They Wish They Knew How to Quit Trump.

So now all the people who tell themselves they hate Trump are chortling over how unpopular Trump’s blog is, instead of just ignoring it, like they would if they were actually as sick of him as they claim to be. This is because their brains are broken. I know this because my brain is broken, and even I can’t believe how crazy they are.

Either Trump is some sort of mesmerizing cult leader with literally half of America in his thrall, or he’s a useless has-been who can’t even get anybody to read his dumb blog. Make up your minds, libs.

But then, what else are the #Resistance types supposed to do these days? They wouldn’t be so obsessed with Liz Cheney right now if they didn’t need to distract us from the fact that Biden is a dud. Inflation, skyrocketing gas prices, persistent unemployment, the worst border crisis in decades… And we’re not even six months into the Biden era. If you’re old enough to remember Jimmy Carter’s presidency, this is all eerily familiar. We’re coming out of a Chinese pandemic, but now we’re being afflicted with another grim disease: malaise.

No wonder they only want to talk about Trump!

K-12 IMPLOSION UPDATE: Virginia parents group launches PAC to unseat school board members over reopening, race controversies.

A political action committee (PAC) launched Tuesday with the intent of unseating multiple school board members in one of Virginia’s most populous counties because of an ongoing feud over critical race theory.

The Loudoun County school board members showed a complete “misunderstanding of their duties and responsibility as elected officials,” reads a press release from Fight for Schools PAC.

It specifically names Beth Barts, Brenda Sheridan, Ian Serotkin, Denise Corbo, Leslee King and Atoosa Reaser. Each were reportedly part of a secret Facebook group where members compiled a list of parents who opposed critical race theory in the school district, according to the Daily Wire.

Tuesday’s announcement comes amid division and turmoil within one of the nation’s top counties for public education. For months, parents and school officials have wrestled with questions about reopenings and equity trainings.

NRA BANKRUPTCY PETITION DISMISSED. “The Court finds that the NRA did not file the bankruptcy petition in good faith because this filing was not for a purpose intended or sanctioned by the Bankruptcy Code. Therefore, cause exists under section 1112(b) to dismiss this case, which the Court finds is in the best interests of creditors and the estate.”

GAS LINE UPDATE: I went shooting this morning and all the stations — including the big truck stops out at Lovell Road — looked dead-normal. On the way back, I heard the most popular local radio station admonishing people not to panic buy. After lunch, I noticed that the stations I passed were jammed . . .

CORN, POPPED: Popular Detroit Police Chief Craig Resigns, May Go After Whitmer’s Gig. “Chief Craig, who is black, is popular with his cops, the citizens of Detroit, and the largely white suburbanites that encompass Detroit on three sides. His friends call him ‘Hollywood’ because he is comfy in front of news cameras, where he spends a lot of time. Then-president Trump called Craig, ‘terrific.'”
