HARDEN NOW:  Quick Word on Disconnection.

Diversification, expansion, anti-fragility. The next few years are going to suck. They’ll suck worse if we’re stupid.

SOME NICE ART FROM STACY TABB. I like her TANSTAAFL.

HEATHER MAC DONALD: Words of Division. Cloaked in an appeal to unity, President Biden’s inaugural speech hit all the expected themes of racial resentment and blame.

‘WE MUST END THIS UNCIVIL WAR,’ BIDEN SAYS, TAKING OVER A U.S. IN CRISIS:

Standing on the steps of the U.S. Capitol two weeks after a mob of then-President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the building, Biden called for a return to civic decency in an inaugural address marking the end of Trump’s tempestuous four-year term.

“To overcome these challenges, to restore the soul and secure the future of America, requires so much more than words. It requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy: unity,” Biden, a Democrat, said after taking the oath of office.

“We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal. We can do this – if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts.”

That’s nice. But in war, the other side gets a vote:

Besides, as Dana Loesch writes: Biden Should Say “Civility,” Not “Unity.”

UPDATE: Unity!

(Updated and bumped.)

OPEN THREAD: The first Open Thread of the Biden Era.

FROM A FRIEND: “Advice to the despairing: sit back and enjoy the show, it’ll be absurd before it becomes entirely ridiculous.”

TEN SIGNS THAT you are the side chick. These may apply in politics, too . . .

AMAZON POLITICIZES VACCINE DISTRIBUTION: Amazon Offers To Help Biden Administration With Vaccine Effort After Sitting On The Sidelines For A Month.

Amazon offered to help the Biden administration on Wednesday, shortly after President Joe Biden was sworn into office, with efforts to distribute the coronavirus vaccine, a proposal that the tech giant had not submitted to the Trump administration in the month since the vaccine was approved for public use.

“As you begin your work leading the country out of COVID-19 crisis, Amazon stands ready to assist you in reaching your goal of vaccinating 100 million Americans in the first 100 days of your administration,” Dave Clark, Amazon’s senior vice president of world-wide operations, wrote in a letter to Biden, according to Axios.

“We are prepared to leverage our operations, information technology, and communications capabilities and expertise to assist your administration’s vaccination efforts. Our scale allows us to make a meaningful impact immediately in the fight against COVID-19, and we stand ready to assist you in this effort,” said Clark.

Clark also requested that Amazon’s 800,000 employees — who he characterized as “essential workers” — should be prioritized for vaccination.

Between delaying vaccine distribution for political reasons and nuking Parler, Amazon has had quite a January.

THAT WAS FAST:  Minutes after Biden took office, the Report of President Trump’s 1776 Commission (on which my colleague Peter Kirsanow served) was taken off the White House website.  I am told a Biden Executive Order has abolished the 1776 Commission already.

This afternoon I got an email from Pete.  As he put it,  this “tells you everything about the Left’s priorities–can’t have the truth about America out there for even a minute” and “I’m sure the Fahrenheit 451 crowd is tracking down every copy they can.”

FLASHBACK: Revisiting the Future with the 1963 Chrysler Turbine Car.

A friend of mine who’s a turbine engineer worked for Garrett on a turbine-powered semi. It pulled like crazy, even on steep grades, but fuel consumption was . . . prohibitive.
