PRIVACY: AI cameras introduced in London to monitor social distancing and lockdown restrictions.
Vivacity Labs said they have more than 1,000 sensors installed across the UK, in cities including London, Manchester, Oxford, Cambridge and Nottingham.
Chief Operating Officer at Vivacity Peter Mildon told BBC Radio Kent on Wednesday that the data is potentially “useful for informing policy decisions” regarding lockdown measures.
He stressed that the cameras are not CCTV but that they operate as a data collating device rather than a camera that stores footage.
“They are not recording any footage, they are not streaming any footage and no one is actually watching it,” he said.
For now, anyway.
Besides, with facial recognition presumably baked in, the data is just as valuable even if no video is recorded.

In Thursday’s report, the Defence Select Committee praised the government’s decision to exclude Huawei due to its links with the Chinese Communist Party, which it said were evidenced by its ownership model, the government subsidies it has received and its “apparent willingness” to support China’s intelligence agencies and China’s 2017 National Intelligence Law.
“Having a company so closely tied to a state and political organisation sometimes at odds with UK interests should be a point of concern and the decision to remove Huawei from our networks is further supported by these links,” it said.

WHAT COULD GO WRONG? New Consumer Alert on Yelp Takes Firm Stance Against Racism.
Communities have always turned to Yelp in reaction to current events at the local level. As the nation reckons with issues of systemic racism, we’ve seen in the last few months that there is a clear need to warn consumers about businesses associated with egregious, racially-charged actions to help people make more informed spending decisions. Yelp’s User Operations team already places alerts on business pages when we notice an unusual uptick in reviews that are based on what someone may have seen in the news or on social media, rather than on a first-hand experience with the business. Now, when a business gains public attention for reports of racist conduct, such as using racist language or symbols, Yelp will place a new Business Accused of Racist Behavior Alert on their Yelp page to inform users, along with a link to a news article where they can learn more about the incident.
Found via Ian Miles Cheong, who tweets, “I can’t see this being abused at all.” I hope Yelp is prepared for the onslaught of lawsuits from business owners that is sure to follow this decision as it’s rolled out.
